The nymph Echo offended the goddess Hera. As punishment, Hera took away Echo's voice, so she could only repeat the last words of other people. Eventually, poor Echo faded away, and to this day only the sound of her repeating words remains.
Diorama elements:
--Echo the nymph, flowers, mushrooms: Playmobil
--Echo soundwaves: wire, edited with blurring and words
--Stump: dollar store craft supplies
--Greenery and fallen log: moss and a piece of wood
--Sky: fabric
Done for Smile on Saturday: Expose the E, but it didn't work out this week. Next time!
This is part of Chiracahua National Monument. Echo Canyon is an overlook site. The valley in the distance leads to Wilcox, Arizona some 35 miles north.
There’s a distinct beauty in moments that linger just out of reach—memories wrapped in golden light, carrying the essence of simpler days. The past breathes softly, not through grand gestures, but in the quiet familiarity of a melody, a fleeting scent, or the warmth of a sunlit afternoon. It whispers in the rustle of trees, in the hum of a distant highway, in the stillness of a world untouched by urgency.
These echoes are not mere memories but pieces of us, shaping our present with every glimmer of what once was. They hold the laughter shared under boundless skies, the gentle pauses between conversations, and the unspoken joy of fleeting summers. Each moment feels eternal, even as time moves relentlessly forward.
There’s a weightlessness to these reflections—a freedom found in revisiting what was, unburdened by the rush of now. They remind us of the beauty in simplicity, the charm of things imperfect yet cherished, the fleeting magic of connection. And in their company, there is peace, as if the past wraps itself around us with quiet assurance.
The echoes of yesterday teach us to listen, to pause, and to embrace what we once carried forward. They remind us that while time may fade, the feelings remain, rooted deeply within us, like anchors to the soul.
A panorama of South Lake Tahoe from Echo Summit. Elevation over 7000 ft. I got there from Sacramento which is about sea level. It's a steep winding ascend to this area in the Eldorado National Forest. A lot of steep winding ups and downs along the way next to cliffs and a river. It's one of those roads where you can't take your eyes off the road, or your hands off the wheel. A challenging road to maintain speed limits. And the drive down is just as exciting.
Here's the link to my YouTube video of the road trip:
Thanks for viewing.
this installation is by an unknown Central St Martins student. I was passing by Cochrane Theatre and took this pic
I've been adding to my Echoes series again, this time at a manor house that was deserted some time ago. I thoroughly enjoyed this visit though, as always, I was too nervous to fully think about what I was doing photography wise. I really enjoy visiting these places by myself but there are times when I wish there was someone to keep watch for me.
I know I said this red dress was getting put back in the box for a while but I knew it would add a bit of colour to a dark, decaying backdrop. I promise you won't see it in the next few shoots ;0)
Lastly, do we think that this is too dark?
Sometimes I arrive at a location not really having much of a clue what I'm going to point the camera at. Last night, returning here for the first time in some months I sat at the edge of the dunes, gazing absently at the scene and being indecisive until I realised that the silhouettes and their shadows on the wet sand left by the outgoing tide were the subject. I hope this complete stranger and her jumping dog don't mind me putting them in front of you. I hope her friend and the second dog, who had adopted less pleasing stances don't mind me using a bit of content aware fill to airbrush them from the story. I'm forever forgetting what a wonderful lens I have in the 70-200. I need to remember to use it more often.
I've been to Gwithian so many times over almost the whole of my life, both with and without the camera bag. It's been a family favourite for body boarding, twilight barbecues and throwing frisbees as far as possible ever since childhood. At that time, money was scarce and my parents couldn't afford exotic holidays abroad, which hardly seemed to matter when this place was on the doorstep. We would always be among the last off the beach, heading back to our camping pitch, or to home if it wasn't holiday time as the dusk settled around us.
To the right of this spot lies the sea encircled Godrevy Lighthouse, which we recently discovered to our horror is dubbed "Seal Island" in summertime for the benefit of visitors from beyond the county border by the boat trip operators of St Ives. I've no idea how successful the ruse is, besides which you'll see far more seals here in winter, lolling about on the beach at nearby Mutton Cove. To the left, one can walk happily for at least two miles on unbroken sands towards the Hayle Estuary, much of it completely unoccupied. In summer the sun sinks directly into St Ives Bay, often setting the sky alight with golds, oranges and pinks as the blue hour is heralded in. For me, this has always been my Echo Beach. Even though Porthtowan and Portreath are closer, this is always the place I head for first. When I eventually summon up the courage to don the wetsuit for the first time this summer, it will be right here too.
As for the picture itself, I've been doing a little experimentation with ICM and blending to get this sort of effect. I follow a chap called Mark Tunstall who does it very well, and decided to try it myself. Still a work in progress but I like the effect - I suspect it doesn't work for everyone. I've also been intentionally reducing the colour range in each image. Whether it's a principle I'll continue to follow forever I don't know yet, but the extra free time recently has enabled further progress along the great learning curve of landscape photography. Time to experiment and try and discover a style that I'm truly content with. I'm not there yet, but life is about the journey and not the end result.
I hope those of you who have been under stringent lockdown are able with care to have a little more freedom now. I've enjoyed reworking old images over the last two months, but not as much as I'm enjoying getting outside and making new ones.
Stay safe. Stay well.
Still morning on Echo Lake. One of my favorite reflective scenics in Vermont. Near Tyson on magical Rte 100. The more impressionistic version to follow later.
Hope you're all enjoying Sping & March. I'm still super busy with Echo....taking her to multiple dog training classes and many outings during the day.
Two more pics below in comments.

This town is filled with echoes. It's like they were trapped behind the walls, or beneath the cobblestones. When you walk you feel like someone's behind you, stepping in your footsteps.

Echo Lake from Echo Lake Beach at Acadia National Park, Maine. Beech Mountain to the right with the Canadian Cliffs. There is a trail up this way with 4 long iron ladders to ascend the cliffs.
To pass time while waiting for kittens to go in my trap at my cat colony yesterday, I took pics of Echo at a park in town. This bench was made from old skate boards.
The look of this abandoned church is sooo amazing, flags still stand defiant against the erosion of time. The air is heavy with the weight of history, and every step is one into a forgotten era.
Just posting a recent shot of Echo taken on our drive last Memorial Weekend.
If you follow me on facebook, you've already seen it.
I still don't have time to visit your stream and comment like I used to.
I have been viewing most of your pics and commenting sporadically but am finding that it's not fair if I comment at a few of my follower's streams but leave others out so I will stop commenting completely until I have time to devote to Flickr like before.
NO comments necessary. I just wanted to add this to Echo's 2014 set. Have a great weekend and June everyone!!!
There are many blue butterflies. An expert just confirmed id.
Location is Northerly from Highway 410 and Nile on a rough road (FS 1701) also known as Maloy Road then right on FS 1713 for about 2 miles which is the continuation of Maloy Road. After about 2 mile drive on FS 1713 I hiked about 2 miles. IMG_6316
Taken this morning on our walk. Echo has really grown & matured. Later this month she'll be getting spayed. She still keeps me super busy during the day so most of my flickr-ing will be at night.

Our last trip to Yosemite was in February this year. My friend and I have brought about hiking in our discussion recently. It reminded me of this tranquil scene when I stopped to catch my breath. The moss of this tree with the snowy cathedral peaks just caught my attention. I will definitely go back this coming November.

In the hushed realm where winter whispers,
Amongst the shrouded peaks of silent splendor,
There lies a world, untouched, serene,
A canvas of nature's purest contour.
Here, the mountains rise with grace,
Their snowy crowns gleaming in soft light,
A fortress of solitude in the sky's embrace,
Veiled in mist, they stand, an ethereal sight.
In this quietude, where time slows its pace,
The soul finds its haven, its silent retreat,
Amidst the echoes of tranquility's face,
In the heart of winter, where earth and heaven meet.
