Costs a dollar more but so much fun! It rockets up hills and I was keeping pace with roadies while barely pedaling. It's pedal-assist, so you pedal and then the electric motor kicks in.

Riding to an appointment. My local car use has dropped off a cliff since getting mobile on the eBike. I had an old Gazelle Dutch bike years ago that was similarly useful, but Hyde is hillier than Amsterdam and I still got hot. The addition of the motor makes hills & headwinds disappear though and I can dress as if just going for a stroll. Having to pedal still equals aerobic exercise and so I still feel better for it :)

It is estimated that there are roughly 120 million e-bikes on the road in China.

eBike, peddle assist combo street and mountain bike. I like riding bikes except into a headwind and up hills. This pretty much takes those out of the equation.

Urinals is evidently the name of a punk band formed in Los Angeles. Splashy name, don't you think?

(I've lost my notebook so I'm going by memory here!)

This woman has a Pi Mobility electric bicycle. She tows a trailer covered with photovoltatic cells which she says charges the bike's battery. She travels around doing demonstrations and I think she said something about touring. I wish I had my notebook!

Right before sunset, I took my new electric bike up the hill to the glorious Coyote Ridge in the Marin headlands. I love riding during that golden hour, which makes the whole landscape glow like embers, while cool tendrils of fog settle on the mountain, and the night’s dark shadows creep in from the valley below.

I started down by Tennessee Valley Beach, climbed straight up the hill to the Coastal Trail, overlooking Muir Beach. Then I trekked inland to rejoin the legendary Miwok Trail, up to Coyote Ridge’s majestic overlook, where I stopped to take a few pix and panoramas. From there, it was a smooth joyride down County View and the darkening Tam Valley below.

My Benno Boost handled that steep ride well, rolling smoothly over the rocky paths, giving me just the extra lift I needed to get a vigorous exercise without running out of breath. Even though it’s designed to casual everyday use, that is one rugged bike and I now ride it every chance I get. I still had a 20% charge left on my battery, and it only took a couple hours to recharge.

As we now have to stay isolated from each other to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, I feel incredibly lucky that I live in a place where I can find my bliss outdoors in such a magnificent natural setting. And I still got a chance to connect with a few bikers and hikers on the trail, but with enough distance than none of us were at risk.

I love that biking helps us connect with our neighbors, scaling back our transportation to a more human scale -- and inviting us to live more lightly on the earth. Vive le velo électrique!

My son bought an ebike kit that he is installing on his old Schwinn LeTour. It required a new fork with 10mm dropouts so the axle would fit.
