The earliest recorded mention of Notre-Dame des Doms cathedral dates from 1037. The current metropolitan basilica as we see it today was built in the 12th century. It is the oldest monument in the Palace of the Popes square. Its style is Provençal Romanesque, but it has lost the purity of its original line with the changes it has undergone. The imposing statue of the Virgin Mary overlooking the bell tower was erected in 1859. T The cathedral combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. The porch and nave are Romanesque, the Gothic chapels and the apse and balconies were rebuilt in Baroque style in 1672. The last renovation completed in 2016 revealed 13th century wall drawings and sculptures hidden behind a layer of lime. The Metropolis was consecrated as a Minor Basilica in 1854 and the statue of the Protector Virgin of Avignon was placed at its summit in 1859, at a time when Marian worship was very popular. It is made of gold lead and weighs 4.5 tons, it was gilded again for the Great Jubilee of the year 2000.

This is the earliest picture I know of showing the two of us together. Frank's late wife took it in October, 1982, on the occasion of Frank's birthday. Now, in my case anyway, it's more than half a lifetime ago. I'm on the right.

We had been together for a year by then. Now it's been 27 years . . .

We've been spouses under Canadian law since 2003.

Well, its been a fun ride. Ultimately we will prevail over religiously inspired bigotry, because freedom doesn't come from god (or dog) or any other imaginary friend; it's our inalienable birthright as human beings.

From the earliest of times, Jockey's Ridge has been enjoyed by many natives and visitors to the Outer Banks. It is a unique park due to its geological features and due to its natural movement and change. To help establish the Park an earlier nonprofit organization, called the People to Preserve Jockeys Ridge, was formed in the early 1970's at a time when the dune was threatened with development for houses. As a result of their efforts, Jockey's Ridge became a State Park in 1975. Today the park is enjoyed and supported by more than 1 million annual visitors.

I'm still processing, as said Chris Rock. He had physical damage mostly, I’m (and a lot of people all over the world) – spiritual. Something’s happened, that’s almost all what I know for now. Maybe even worse than the beginning of the war itself. Though I’m not surprised. Just shocked. You see, I was a field journalist, as I call it: I went to the places, all the chronicles of our region went through me (criminal, drug, politics which is worse and so on). When I returned from the meetings of our government, usually I just dropped sick, though apparently nothing too awful happened. Except of the feeling of it. But the main thing – people told me the truth. They wanted me to pass it, which I did. I was cheeky, and liked the feeling of the battle. But I knew an awful things, really awful, about how the power is work.

For now, but not for long, I got nothing left for this World Anti-war 1st diary. So, I’ll use this pause to ask: does anyone read those diaries? Do you see any help in them?

To be continued…

I want to speak more about these dark times, to show, to see and to learn myself. To do something together to get out of this dark. Alive and sane if possible. Now my photo art become the “photo-diary from the other side”, “from the stolen country”. I’m very welcome you to stay in touch with me on Insta, which now turned to the main site of the Digital Resistance in Russia in spite of becoming the outlaw social media or maybe partly because of that.

Earliest red light illuminates the upper levels of the western wall of Zion National Park

The earliest records show a church on this site in the twelfth century built by Geoffrey de Clinton sometime between 1100 and 1135.

By 1870 the church was in a very bad state of repair, and the vicar, Canon Blagdon, with considerable financial help from his father-in-law set about rebuilding it. The result is an interesting example of Victorian Church architecture at its best.

The F-16C Fighting Falcon ( Single-seat air-combat and multi-role fighter ) is a fighter aircraft featured in many Ace Combat games as one of the earliest available aircraft. Designed first and foremost as a lightweight close-range dogfighter, the F-16 has evolved to become equally lethal in both air combat and attack missions. In most of its appearances, the F-16C carries a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, and features higher maneuverability than most comparable aircraft, making it a highly versatile option for players early in a game's campaign. The F-16 Fighting Falcon is the first operational fighter to employ fly-by-wire flight controls, relaxed static stability, high-g cockpit, bubble canopy, variable camber wings, blended wing-body design, modular construction, and integrated digital avionics.

Hinton St Mary (Dorset, UK), 4th Century AD

Siena Cathedral is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

It was the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Siena, and from the 15th century that of the Archdiocese of Siena. It is now the seat of the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino.

The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The dome was completed in 1264. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The bell tower has six bells, where the oldest one was cast in 1149. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with the addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius. There are thirty-five statues of prophets and patriarchs grouped around the virgin. The finest Italian artists of that era completed works in the cathedral. These artists were Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Pinturicchio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Bernini.

The origins of the first structure are obscure and shrouded in legend. There was a 9th-century church with the bishop's palace at the present location. In December 1058 a synod was held in this church resulting in the election of pope Nicholas II and the deposition of the antipope Benedict X.

In 1196, the cathedral masons’ guild, the Opera di Santa Maria, was put in charge of the construction of a new cathedral. Works were started with the north–south transept and it was planned to add the main, larger body of the cathedral later, but this enlargement was never accomplished.

By 1215 there were already daily masses said in the new church. There are records from 1226 onwards of the transport of black and white marble, probably for the construction of the façade and the bell tower. The vaults and the transept were constructed in 1259–1260. In 1259 Manuello di Ranieri and his son Parri carved some wooden choir stalls, which were replaced about 100 years later and have now disappeared. In 1264, Rosso Padellaio was paid for the copper sphere on top of the dome.

A second massive addition of the main body of the cathedral was planned in 1339. It would have more than doubled the size of the structure by means of an entirely new nave and two aisles ranged perpendicular to the existing nave and centered on the high altar. The construction was begun under the direction of Giovanni di Agostino, better known as a sculptor. Construction was halted by the Black Death in 1348. Basic errors in the construction were already evident by then, however, and the work was never resumed. The outer walls, remains of this extension, can now be seen to the south of the Duomo. The floor of the uncompleted nave now serves as a parking lot and museum, and, though unfinished, the remains are a testament to Sienese power, ambition, and artistic achievement. One of the walls can be climbed by narrow stairs for a high view of the city.

Underneath the choir of the Duomo, a narthex containing important late 13th-century frescoes (probably about 1280) was found and excavated in 1999–2003. The frescoes depict scenes from the Old Testament and the life of Christ. This was part of the entrance of an earlier church. But when the baptistry was built, this under-church was filled with rubble. The narthex is now open to the public.

The belltower has six bells, the oldest one was cast in 1149.

The façade of Siena Cathedral is one of the most fascinating in all of Italy and certainly one of the most impressive features in Siena. Each of the cardinal points (west, east, north, and south) has its own distinct work; by far the most impressive of these is the west façade. Acting as the main entryway to the Duomo proper, it boasts three portals (see Portal (architecture)); the central one is capped by a bronze-work sun.

Built in two stages and combining elements of French Gothic, Tuscan Romanesque architecture, and Classical architecture, the west façade is a beautiful example of Sienese workmanship. Work began on the lower part around 1284. Built using polychrome marble, the work was overseen by Giovanni Pisano whose work on the Duomo's façade and the pulpit was influenced by his father Nicola Pisano.

The lower portion of the façade is designed from Giovanni's original plans. Built in Tuscan Romanesque style it emphasizes a horizontal unity of the area around the portals at the expense of the vertical bay divisions. The three portals, surmounted by lunettes, are based on Giovanni Pisano's original designs, as are much of the sculpture and orientation surrounding the entrances. The areas around and above the doors, as well as the columns between the portals, are richly decorated with acanthus scrolls, allegorical figures and biblical scenes.

Giovanni Pisano was able to oversee his work until about 1296 when he abruptly left Siena, reportedly over creative differences with the Opera del Duomo, the group that oversaw the construction and maintenance of the Siena cathedrals. Pisano's work on the lower façade was continued under the direction of Camaino di Crescentino, but a number of changes were made to the original plan. These included raising the façade due to the raising of the nave of the church and the installation of a larger rose window based on designs by Duccio di Buoninsegna and commissioned by the city of Siena. Work on the west façade came to an abrupt end in 1317 when the Opera del Duomo redirected all efforts to the east façade.

There is debate as to when work on the upper façade was completed. Most scholars agree that it was finished sometime between 1360 and 1370, though when it began again is not known. The work continued to use Pisano's plans for the façade with some adaptations under the direction of Giovanni di Cecco. Di Cecco preferred more elaborate designs, most likely inspired by the Orvieto Cathedral. The façade needed to be much higher than foreseen as the nave had, once again, been raised.[citation needed]

The changes were probably needed to accommodate the raised nave and di Cecco's more elaborate design scheme, heavily influenced by French Gothic architecture, which caused the apparent division of the upper portion of the cathedral. Most noticeably the pinnacles of the upper portion do not continue from the columns flanking the central portal as they normally would in such cathedrals. Instead, they are substantially offset, resulting in a vertical discontinuity which is uncommon in cathedrals of the time as it can lead to structural weakness. To adjust for this imbalance, the towers on each side of the cathedral were opened by adding windows, reducing the weight they needed to support. The upper portion also features heavy Gothic decoration, a marked contrast to the simple geometric designed common to Tuscan Romanesque architecture.

While most of the sculpture decorating the lower level of the lavish façade was sculpted by Giovanni Pisano and assistant depicting prophets, philosophers and apostles, the more Gothic statuary adorning the upper portion—including the half-length statues of the patriarchs in the niches around the rose window—are works of later, unattributed, sculptors. Almost all the statuary adorning the cathedral today are copies. The originals are kept in the Crypt of the Statues in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.

Three large mosaics on the gables of the façade were made in Venice in 1878. The large central mosaic, the Coronation of the Virgin, is the work of Luigi Mussini. The smaller mosaics on each side, Nativity of Jesus and Presentation of Mary in the Temple, were made by Alessandro Franchi.

The bronze central door is a recent addition to the cathedral, replacing the original wooden one. The large door, known as the Porta della Riconoscenza, was commissioned in 1946 near the end of the German occupation of Siena. Sculpted by Vico Consorti and cast by Enrico Manfrini, the scenes on the door represent the Glorification of the Virgin, Siena's patron saint.

On the left corner pier of the façade is a 14th-century inscription marking the grave of Giovanni Pisano. Next to the façade stands a column with a statue of the Contrade Lupa, a wolf breast-feeding Romulus and Remus. According to local legend Senius and Aschius, sons of Remus and founders of Siena, left Rome with the statue, stolen from the Temple of Apollo in Rome.

Among the earliest flowering Rhododendrons in Amsterdam is this pretty shrub pinking just inside the west gate of Wertheim Park (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/22743714163/in/photoli...) opposite the main grounds of the Hortus Botanicus. The pink began to peak out already at the end of February, and today there's full blossom.

There are about 850 species of Rhododendron and I'm not sure which one I've caught here. I do know that the first scientific description of a Rhododendron was made by great Carolus Clusius (1526-1609) for his flora of 1601. Under the name of Ledum alpinum he describes what we know today as Rhododendron hirsutum. He remarks that it grows among the rocks of the great Schneeberg-Schneealpen Massif of Lower Austria, the easternmost part of the European Alps.

The earliest Montego I have spotted in a good while. The other ones I have seen in recent times, have all been late registered estate variants. In addition, I cannot recall spotting a Montego in this shade of beige before! I'd imagine that it wasn't a common colour choice on a Montego, even when new! It suits the car IMO! I am not sure what the car is in front of the Montego, possibly a 1950s Morris Oxford?!

Worship feeling to Mount Fuji

Act to find religious value in Mount Fuji

The Japanese considered Mount Fuji to be a holy mountain from the earliest times

The earliest literary reference to Sounion is in Homer's Odyssey (III. 278–285). The story recounts that as the various Greek commanders sailed back from Troy, the helmsman of the ship of King Menelaus of Sparta died at his post while rounding "Holy Sounion, Cape of Athens."[1] Menelaus landed at Sounion to give his companion full funeral honours (i.e., cremation on a funeral pyre on the beach).

Archaeological finds on the site date from as early as 700 BC. Herodotus (VI.87) mentions that in sixth century BC, the Athenians celebrated a quinquennial festival at Sounion, which involved Athens' leaders sailing to the cape in a sacred boat.

I have an interesting position for the dude with such mixed scientific and poetic mindset that I have. I live in Russia. I I’m outside the war but I live in the war epicenter: where it’s come from. Though I feel that I live mostly in Ukraine, and there’s just my ghost. I’m beginning every morning from the reading about Ukraine and doing that all day long. I’ve followed as much Ukrainian and war correspondents accounts on insta as throughout all my life before. Maybe more.

The earliest Transit of this shape I have spotted in some time. Looked wonderfully original, and for a van in London, the bodywork was surprisingly in good condition. Let’s hope the ULEZ extension in October doesn’t result in the van being scrapped after it surviving in the same ownership for so long.

The earliest written account of the city is the 10th Century Laguna Copperplate Inscription which describe an Indianized kingdom maintaining diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Medang and commercial exchanges with Ancient Japan and Song Dynasty China. The city was invaded by Brunei's Sultan Bolkiah and was already Islamized by the 15th century when the Spanish first arrived. Manila eventually became the center of Spanish activity in the Far East and one end of the Manila–Acapulco galleon trade route linking Latin America and Asia. This caused it to be called the "Pearl of the Orient". Several Chinese insurrections, local revolts, a British Occupation and a Sepoy mutiny also occurred thereafter. Later, it saw the rise of the Philippine Revolution which was followed by the arrival of the Americans who made contributions to the city's urban planning and development only to have most of those improvements lost in the devastation of World War II. Since then the city has been rebuilt.

Manila was first known as Ginto (land of gold) or Suvarnadvipa by its neighboring provinces, and was officially the Kingdom of Maynila. The Kingdom of Maynila flourished during the latter half of the Ming Dynasty as a result of trade relations with China. Ancient Tondo was maintained as the traditional capital of the empire. Its rulers were equivalent to kings and not mere chieftains, and they were addressed as panginuan or panginoon ("lords"), anak banwa ("son of heaven") or lakandula ("lord of the palace"). During the 13th century, the city consisted of a fortified settlement and trading quarter at the shores of the Pasig river, on top of previous older towns. There is also early evidence of Manila being invaded by the Indianized empire of Majapahit, due to the epic eulogy poem Nagarakretagama which inscribed its conquest by Maharaja Hayam Wuruk.Saludong or Selurong which is a historical name for the city of Manila is listed in Canto 14 alongside Sulot, which is now Sulu, and Kalka.

During the reign of Sultan Bolkiah in 1485 to 1521, the Sultanate of Brunei decided to break the Dynasty of Tondo's monopoly in the China trade by attacking it and establishing the state of Selurong (now Manila) as a Bruneian satellite-state.[8] A new dynasty under the Islamized Rajah Salalila. was also established to challenge the House of Lakandula in Tondo. Islam was further strengthened by the arrival to the Philippines of traders and proselytizers from Malaysia and Indonesia. The multiple states that existed in the Philippines simplified Spanish colonization. Manila was temporarily threatened by the invasion of Chinese pirate-warlord Limahong before it became the seat of the colonial government of Spain.

In 1571 Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi founded the Manila in what today is Intramuros. Manila was made the capital of the Philippine Islands, which Spain would control for over three centuries, from 1565 to 1898. The city was occupied by Great Britain for two years from 1762 to 1764 as part of the Seven Years' War. The city remained the capital of the Philippines under the government of the provisional British governor, acting through the Mexican-born Archbishop of Manila, Manuel Rojo del Rio y Vieyra and the captive Real Audiencia. However, armed resistance to the British persisted, centered in Pampanga, and was led by Oidor Don Simón de Anda y Salazar.

Manila also became famous during the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade which lasted for three centuries and brought goods from as far as Mexico and Peru all the way to Southeast Asia. Silver that was mined in Mexico and Peru were exchanged for Chinese silk, Indian gems, and the spices of the East Indies.

In 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States. Under the American control, the new government invited Daniel Burnham to plan a modern Manila. The Burnham Plan was a project that attempted to create Manila as Paris on the Prairie, with a vision of a government center occupying all of Wallace Field, which extends from Luneta to the present Taft Avenue. The Philippines Capitol was to rise on the Taft Avenue end of the field, facing toward the sea, and would form, with the buildings of different government bureaus and departments, a mighty quadrangle, lagoon in the center and a monument to Rizal at its Luneta end. Of Burnham’s proposed government center, only three units were built: the Legislative Building and the building of the Finance and Agricultural departments, which were completed on the eve of the War. By then, President Manuel L. Quezon had doomed the Burnham Plan by creating a new capital outside Manila, which was named after him, Quezon City.

Manila was the site of the most fierce battle in the Pacific theater during the war. During the battle, Manila became a city of bloodbath in Asia where 100,000 civilians were killed. It was the second most devastated city in the world after Warsaw during the Second World War. Since then the city has been rebuilt.

With Arsenio Lacson becoming the first elected mayor (prior to this all mayors were appointed), Manila underwent The Golden Age, Manila was revitalized and became once again the pearl of the orient, which Manila has earned before the outbreak of World War II. During the Marcos dictatorship, the region of the Manila metropolitan area was enacted as an independent entity in 1975 encompassing several cities and towns, being as a whole the seat of government of the Philippines.

On 1992, Alfredo Lim became the mayor, and was known for his anti-crime crusades. When Lim ran for the presidency during the 1998 presidential election, his vice mayor Lito Atienza was elected as city mayor. Atienza was known for renovating most of the city's plaza, and projects that would benefit the populace. He was the Mayor of Manila for 3 terms (9 years); barred for seeking a fourth consecutive term. Lim defeated Atienza's son Ali in the 2007 city election and immediately reversed all of Atienza's projects claiming the projects made little contribution to the improvements of the city. On July 17, 2008, councilor Dennis Alcoreza, filed human rights complaints before the Commission on Human Rights, against Lim, and other Manila officials. Twenty four Manila officials also resigned because of the maltreatment of Lim's police forces.

While the eastern part of Manila faced a catastrophe during the flooding of Tropical Storm Ketsana in 2009, the only major inconvenience in the city was the flooded Quezon Boulevard underpass which took two days to clean up and the district of Santa Mesa, the most flooded area within the city. During the 2010 city elections, Alfredo Lim won against secretary Lito Atienza. After a few months of taking office, Lim was harshly criticized on the bloody resolution of the Manila hostage crisis, one of the deadliest hostage crisis in the Philippines.

One of the earliest Volvo 360 hatchbacks I've seen. I spotted a B reg 360 saloon a few years ago in a different part of London, which is now off the road.

Earliest mentions of the church were about 1100 but the oldest parts of the present church are from the 14th century.

The Bede house was once a Bishops palace.

The medieval Diocese of Lincoln was the largest bishopric in England, extending from the River Thames to the Humber Estuary. Lyddington lay on a north-south road and the estate here was a convenient place for the bishop's entourage to stop when traversing the diocese.

After the Reformation, ownership passed to the Cecil family who made it their private house. By 1600 it had passed to Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl of Exeter, son of Lord Burghley, who converted it into an alms-house for twelve poor bedesmen and it continued in this use until 1930.

Today it is a Grade 1 listed building under the protection of English Heritage.

The earliest surviving building in Bredon, Worcestershire, is the parish church of St Giles. One of England's most admired churches, it is built largely in the Norman, Early English and Decorated styles. A substantial part of the nave, the north porch and the western tower arch date from the 12th century, with significant additions in the 13th and 14th centuries – the most visible being a tall, octagonal spire, dating from 1300–1350, made famous by the poet, John Masefield.

Thanks for your visit… Any comment you make on my photograph is greatly appreciated and encouraging! But please do not use this image without permission.

This national monument is one of the largest and earliest stone circles in Ireland with a diameter of 145 feet. It originally comprised of 80 upright stones of which 64 still stand and probably dates from the later Bronze Age (circa 1400 to 800 BC). The name ‘Beltany’ derives from the spring festival of Beltane which marked the sunrise on the first day of May. A carved stone known as ‘The Beltany Stone Head’ was found at this site and probably dates from the pre-Christian Iron Age period between 400 bc and 400 ad. This sculpture probably depicts a god associated with the stone circle. Five of the stones are also decorated with prehistoric art known as cup marks. The site was therefore in use for hundreds, if not thousands of years after it was built.

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.

From now on # I will host "Lot No.402_".

The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.

That is the number when it was put up for auction.

No sign was written on the work.

So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.

However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.

A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.

I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

About my book.

I published a book a long time ago.

At that time # I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.

Its Japanese and English.

I will publish it for free.

For details # I explained to the Amazon site.

How to write a novel.

How to take a picture.

A sense of distance to the work.

All of these have something in common.

I wrote down what I felt and left it.

I hope my text will be read by many people.

Thank you.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

The façade needed to be much higher than foreseen as the nave had, once again, been raised.

The earliest organisms that can be classified as fish were soft-bodied chordates that first appeared during the Cambrian period. Although they lacked a true spine, they possessed notochords which allowed them to be more agile than their invertebrate counterparts. Fish would continue to evolve through the Paleozoic era, diversifying into a wide variety of forms. Many fish of the Paleozoic developed external armor that protected them from predators. The first fish with jaws appeared in the Silurian period, after which many (such as sharks) became formidable marine predators rather than just the prey of arthropods.

The earliest local signs of permanent habitation are at the Neolithic site of Pulo, one of the most important such sites in southern Italy. The origins of the city can be traced to a small fishing port; antique graves testify to a fisherman's village in the fourth century BC. The position of the future city offered a valid landing to the commerce of Roman Rubo. The first indication of a toponym on the coast between Turenum (Trani) and Natiolum (Giovinazzo) is in the Itinerarium Provinciarum Antonini Augusti, edited from a third-century core. The place denominated Respa was probably a wrong transcript of the toponym Melpha, referring to a small village of fishermen.

The first official document that mentions the city dates to November 925; it documents a civitas denominated Melfi, situated on a peninsula named Sant'Andrea. The city developed under Byzantine dominion, and was later conquered by the Lombards, who included it in the Duchy of Benevento. The city repelled repeated assaults by the Saracens. As an independent seaport, Molfetta traded with other Mediterranean markets, including Venice, Alexandria, Constantinople, Syria, Amalfi and Ragusa.

At the beginning of the 11th century the Normans arrived, and the autonomy that the city preserved helped foster its development as both a commercial port with the east, and as port of embarcation for pilgrims heading to the Holy Land. The Crusades permitted the city to assume a wider importance. Among the many pilgrims was Conrad of Bavaria, who was so enamoured of the city that he became venerated as San Corrado, the protecting saint of Molfetta. During the Angevin dominion the city succeeded in remaining autonomous. However, the arrival of the Aragonese kingdom to Southern Italy, spurred turbulent struggles between French, Spanish and Italians. These wars provoked death and destruction in the whole south of Italy: the Sack of Molfetta at the hands of the French, 18–19 July 1529, was an episode that stalled the economic rebirth of the city.

The earliest written reference to the Old Castle of Celje dates back to 1323. The original design only included a Romanesque palace and the walls. It was given its today's scope and appearance by the Counts of Celje, the most renowned and notable noble dynasty seated in the area of present-day Slovenia. Their reign and power had a long reach and they had a substantial impact on the political fate of the Central European region. The first Count of Celje to move to the Celje Old Castle with his wife and four children was Friderik I. After moving in, he started to refurbish the castle into a more comfortable dwelling. In the following decades, they extended the curtain wall to include the eastern inner ward, while the four-storey guard tower (the Friderik Tower) took over the main defensive role. Herman II used this tower a dungeon as he locked up his own son Friderik II, after whom the tower is named, due to Friderik's forbidden love for Veronika Deseniška After the demise of the Counts of Celje, the castle was inherited by the Habsburg dynasty who left it to their burgraves.

Having just posted one of Ultramar's earliest petrol stations yesterday, today I thought I'd post one of Burmah's earliest ones. There is no trace whatsoever left of this garage - which to be honest is a bit weird looking in its layout - hardly looks welcoming but then in those days people didn't worry quite so much about that sort of thing! The road name sign we can see far left is Lynmouth Road. Here's the same view in the present day www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5678049,-0.0673837,3a,90y,88.26...

The earliest parts of Blackness Castle were built in the 15th century, probably on the site of an earlier fort. Although built by the Crichton family, the castle has spent almost all of its life in government hands, most recently during the Great War, and the buildings to left and right of the castle are barracks buildings, dating to those times.

Old Sarum (Latin: Sorviodunum) is the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury, in England. The site contains evidence of human habitation as early as 3000 BC. Old Sarum is mentioned in some of the earliest records in the country. It is located on a hill about two miles north of modern Salisbury next to the A345 road.

Old Sarum was originally an Iron age hill fort strategically placed on the conjunction of two trade routes and the River Avon. The hill fort is broadly oval in shape, 400 metres (1,300 ft) in length and 360 metres (1,180 ft) in width; it consists of a double bank and intermediate ditch with an entrance on the eastern side. The site was used by the Romans, becoming the town of Sorviodunum. The Saxons used the site as a stronghold against marauding Vikings, and the Normans built a stone curtain wall around the Iron age perimeter and a centrally placed castle on a motte protected by a deep dry moat. A royal palace was built within the castle for King Henry I and subsequently used by Plantagenet monarchs. A Norman cathedral and bishop's residence were built at the western end of the town.

In 1219, the cathedral was demolished in favour of the new one built near the river and the townspeople moved down to the new city, then called New Salisbury or New Sarum. The castle fell out of use and was sold for materials by King Henry VIII.

By the 19th century, the settlement was officially uninhabited and yet still had formal parliamentary representation, making it the most notorious of the rotten boroughs that existed before the Reform Act 1832.

It is now an English Heritage property and open to the public.

Mary Brickell Park is one of Miami's earliest parks, having been deeded to the city by one of the most influential pioneer family in 1924. From the time of their arrival in Miami, the Brickell's purchased and accumulated land south of the Miami River and Fort Lauderdale.

They opened a trading post located at the mouth of the Miami River. However, it was their real estate holdings that made the family wealthy.

The Mausoleum is the only surviving structure that is directly connected to the Brickell family and is situated on land they once owned on Brickell Point. At one time the Brickell Mausoleum held the remains of William Brickell, who died in 1908 and his wife Mary Brickell, who died in 1922 and their daughter Edith Brickell. Edith died of pneumonia due to the influenza in 1918. This mausoleum was their private family cemetery located on their homestead.

In 1948, however, daughter Maude E. Brickell complained that the nights were too noisy at the mausoleum location and moved the remains of the family members to Woodlawn Cemetery.

Somesville is the earliest village of the town of Mount Desert on Mount Desert Island in southeastern Maine. It is located on the north end of Somes Sound ("Acadia magic.com,"). The village was established by Abraham Somes who was the first settler on the island (Hartford). It attracted many people because of its mills and quarries (Shettleworth, & Vandenbergh, 2001). The entire village is part of the Somesville Historic District. The history of Somesville dates back to Native Americans. The first Native Americans to visit the island were not permanent residents but they visited the island as far back as 4000 B.C. ("Mount desert island,"). After the Native Americans, the first families that settled on the island were Abraham and Hannah Somes as well as James and Rachel Richardson in the year of 1761 (Shettleworth, & Vandenbergh, 2001). Somes was requested by the Massachusetts governor, Francis Bernard, to settle there and establish mills (Shettleworth, & Vandenbergh, 2001). They named their village Somesville and the inlet it was on, Somes Sound, after Abraham and his family (Hartford). Somesville's history still attracts many new inhabitants today. The vast funerary complex of king Djoser at Saqqara is the earliest in Egypt to make extensive use of stone masonry. Inside the fortified perimeter are numerous courtyards and structures, with the step pyramid at the centre looming in the background. In the southeast of the complex is this long courtyard fronted by the facades of solid structures meant to symbolize pavilions for the gods; it has been extensively rebuilt in modern times based on architectural fragments fallen from the original monuments, the in situ foundations, and a good deal of imagination.

This is the famous Heb-Sed court, the space for holding a jubilee in honor of Djoser's 30th year of rule, and every third year thereafter. Relief panels about the event indicate that the king was obliged to prance about the court several times, in doing so demonstrating some continued vitality, and receive the red and white crown symbolizing the unified rule of Upper and Lower Egypt (a conquest that had occurred not that long before Djoser's time).

The architectural layout gives us some sense of what else might have happened here: the pavilions repeat the same format of a tent-like facade, made permanent through masonry construction. Before each pavilion, a staircase leads up to a large niche in the facade, and a labyrinthine passage leads to a hidden chapel at its base. Statues representing seated gods, only fragments of which have survived, were concealed in the chapels, and others must have occupied the niches above on display to the people gathered in the court. Seen here are the first of more than a dozen pavilions on the more elaborately developed west side of the court.

It seems that Djoser, the priests responsible for the funerary complex, and other officials would visit each pavilion in sequence and make sacrifices to their gods, each of which would have been affiliated with a different province of unified Egypt. Further interpretation is hampered by the singularity of this complex; while the staged mastaba tomb would inspire future generations to develop the pyramid, the monumental Heb-sed court was not a prominent element in later burial complexes.

Old Kingdom, early 3rd Dynasty, 27th century BCE.

It's not the earliest we've seen honeybees active in the gardens here, but they're a welcome site, nonetheless. Critical to the vast majority of our produce, honeybees have been in decline around the world in the past decade for a variety of reasons.

But this little one was overflowing with pollen earlier this morning as she worked her way through the Crocus beds gathering as much as she could to take back to the hive. Crocuses need to be pollinated to produce flowers/fruit/seeds and, as "payment" for their pollination services, the bees get to take some of the pollen home to help feed the colony.

Crocuses are an important early-season food source for emerging pollinators, like honeybees and bumble bees, when the overall availability of food sources is low.

The earliest Zenit that is readily available. The 'C' stands for "synchronized" because the letter C in Russian stands for S. One rarely sees the first model (with no flash sync, 1953-55). This sync model was made from 1955 to 1961.

The mechanism for flash sync is in that raised right-hand deck, between the winding knob and the prism housing.

The body of this camera (and the shutter) are basically the same as the Zorki-1 and early Leicas, with removable baseplate and film loading through the bottom. And because of this, the Zenit-C is rather small. Rather like the compact SLRs of a much later period.

The mirror is not instant-return, and returns to viewing position by means of a black string that pulls it down (rather quaint, but effective enough, and unlike many instant-return mirrors, does not produce much vibration when going up).

And of course, like all early SLRs, there is no mechanism to automatically stop down the lens diaphragm. You view and focus with the lens wide open, and then manually close to whatever aperture you want, and then you look through the finder again in order to compose the shot (the finder image becoming more and more difficult to see the smaller the aperture, and at f/16 you see practically nothing).

I'm planning to use this camera with the 135mm f/4 Jupiter-11 (an exact copy of the 135mm Zeiss Sonnar) which is sharp already wide open, and so I'll be shooting wide open, and when shooting wide open the camera will work as if it DID have auto stop-down... That's the way to beat this problem on early SLRs.

The f/3.5 normal lens supplied with this camera is a copy of the Leitz Elmar, which the Russians also used on their early RF cameras of course, in collapsible form, as was used on the early Leicas. On this camera the lens is not collapsible of course, because the mirror is directly behind the lensmount.

This is the earliest Sunny I've seen in a long time- most survivors seem to be G and H platers. This car was in a very nice condition, and in a quite attractive light gold colour paint. However, I was sad to note that it's been untaxed and unlicensed since late last year, casting doubt about its future. I doubt your average person would see this as anything other than an old banger. It's also had its fair share of MOT failures, although the mileage appears to be quite low at 63,000 last MOT in 2014.

I like how these earlier cars don't have the Nissan badge in the obvious place, but rather some fairly hidden lettering on the grille!

Siena Cathedral is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Previously the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Siena, from the 15th century the Archdiocese of Siena, it is now that of the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino.

The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius.

The façade of is one of the most fascinating in all of Italy and certainly one of the most impressive features in Siena. Each of the cardinal points (west, east, north, and south) has their own distinct work; by far the most impressive of these is the west façade. Acting as the main entryway to the Duomo proper, it boasts three portals; the central one is capped by a bronze-work sun.

Built in two stages and combining elements of French Gothic, Tuscan Romanesque architecture, and Classical architecture, the west façade is a beautiful example of Sienanise workmanship. Work began on the lower part around 1284. Built using polychrome marble, the work was overseen by Giovanni Pisano whose work on the Duomo’s façade and pulpit was influenced by his father Nicola Pisano.

The lower portion of the façade is designed from Giovanni's original plans. Built in Tuscan Romanesque style it emphasizes a horizontal unity of the area around the portals at the expense of the vertical bay divisions. The three portals, surmounted by lunettes, are based on Giovanni Pisano’s original designs, as are much of the sculpture and orientation surrounding the entrances.[5] The areas around and above the doors, as well as the columns between the portals, are richly decorated with acanthus scrolls, allegorical figures and biblical scenes.

Giovanni Pisano was able to oversee his work until about 1296 when he abruptly left Siena, reportedly over creative differences with the Opera del Duomo, the group that oversaw the construction and maintenance of the Siena cathedrals. Pisano's work on the lower façade was continued under the direction of Camino di Crescentino, but a number of changes were made to the original plan. These included raising the façade due to the raising of the nave of the church and the instillation of a larger rose window based on designs by Duccio di Buoninsegna and commissioned by the city of Siena.

The façade needed to be much higher than foreseen as the nave had, once again, been raised.

The changes were probably needed to accommodate the raised nave and di Cecco's more elaborate design scheme, heavily influenced by French Gothic architecture, caused the apparent division of the upper portion of the cathedral. Most noticeably the pinnacles of the upper portion do not continue from the columns flanking the central portal as they normally would in such cathedrals. Instead they are substantially offset, resulting in a vertical discontinuity which is uncommon cathedrals of the time as it can lead to structural weakness.

The large door, known as the Porta della Riconoscenza, was commissioned in 1946 near the end of the German occupation of Siena.[7] Sculpted by Vico Consorti and cast by Enrico Manfrini, the scenes on the door represent the Glorification of the Virgin, Siena’s patron saint.

(Explore #11)

When I started taking photographs in earnest, to further my understanding I bought and digested a lot of books and magazines on the subject. I admit thinking of myself now as largely self-taught, although I suppose that's not strictly true given a lot of my knowledge has been filtered down through that of others, albeit in their absence. One of the earliest pieces of advice I can remember reading (alongside the beginner's stumbling block about a small aperture having a large F-number - someone didn't want me in this club), was to take time to explore the subject before deciding on a composition. I've stuck to this diligently to this day, and believe it's one of the fundamental disciplines that marks out a skilled photographer.

Often though, a landscape has multiple possibilities each of which have the potential to offer a great result. This may depend on conditions at the time, or even the photographer's relationship with and appreciation for the subject - not too mention the characteristics of the lens he chooses to shoot with. I'd seen this simple building (actually an old coastguard's lookout post) shot once or twice from close up and directly in front, and on arriving could understand why. To my eye, there were actually two key point's of view of the building once at the summit - the one I'd already seen and another from the right hand-side slightly below the plateau, taking into account a little section of diagonal fence that drops down nicely to form a pleasing angle with the intersecting sea. I must have spent well over an hour crouched down in the long grass at this second vantage point, waiting for the light to come good and pick out the white-washed surfaces amidst brooding cloud. Two other photographers came and went while I was there (both shot from the front), along with the usual dog walkers - one of whom told me a little about the history of the place. Eventually deciding I'd got the shot, I packed up and started to head back down the steady incline, intent on heading elsewhere. It was then that I turned around. I nearly always do this when walking away from a subject, it's almost like saying goodbye to somewhere I've forged a brief connection with and may never visit again. Suddenly I realised this was perhaps 'my' composition, the one that separated it from those I'd already seen and perhaps incorporated best a sense of the place for me. Moving just a few paces further down the track I set up and took just the one shot before the light faded, rendering the building a dull gray. As is typical for me, I shot vertically, and despite originally intending to include more of the sky in my envisaged square crop this is the frame that I feel works best. Luckily I made a reasonable attempt at hyperfocus taking into account the foreground low in the frame, which allowed me to crop as here without losing too much.

Is this the 'best' composition? No, there's no such thing - it's just the one that worked best for me this time round. I still have the unedited RAW's from the other two spots I mentioned, and always have the option of processing those should I so choose. Even with this one, there are subtle changes I could have made had I so wished - for instance the little hut could have been placed directly on intersecting thirds (perhaps a little obvious, but I like forming squares within squares so went with near-intersecting quarters here), or I could have shot really low and thrown out the focus of the stony path altogether. The point is there are compositional choices with most subjects, and it really is worth taking the time to consider just what they may be...

On a separate note, my gratitude goes to Andrew Gibson for interviewing me again for his current excellent series on long exposure photographers.

We must be a pretty tight-knit community as I've recognised all but one of those so far interviewed - each of which have made for fascinating reading - so if unacquainted I'd encourage you to check out the links to some of the others too. There are some very talented people offering insight!

"Siena Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Siena) is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

The finest Italy artists, during that time, completed works in the Cathedral. These artists were Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Pinturicchio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Bernini.

Siena (/siˈɛnə/ see-EN-ə, Italian: [ˈsjɛːna]; in English sometimes spelled Sienna; Latin: Sena Iulia) is a city in Tuscany, Italy. It is the capital of the province of Siena.

The historic centre of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It is one of the nation's most visited tourist attractions, with over 163,000 international arrivals in 2008. Siena is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio, a horse race held twice a year.

Siena, like other Tuscan hill towns, was first settled in the time of the Etruscans (c. 900–400 BC) when it was inhabited by a tribe called the Saina. The Etruscans were a tribe of advanced people who changed the face of central Italy through their use of irrigation to reclaim previously unfarmable land, and their custom of building their settlements in well-defended hill forts. A Roman town called Saena Julia was founded at the site in the time of the Emperor Augustus. Some archaeologists assert that Siena was controlled for a period by a Gaulish tribe called the Senones.

According to local legend, Siena was founded by Senius and Aschius, two sons of Remus and thus nephews of Romulus, after whom Rome was named. Supposedly after their father's murder by Romulus, they fled Rome, taking with them the statue of the she-wolf suckling the infants (Capitoline Wolf), thus appropriating that symbol for the town. Additionally they rode white and black horses, giving rise to the Balzana, or coat of arms of Siena with a white band atop a dark band. Some claim the name Siena derives from Senius. Other etymologies derive the name from the Etruscan family name Saina, the Roman family name Saenii, or the Latin word senex "old" or its derived form seneo "to be old".

Siena did not prosper under Roman rule. It was not sited near any major roads and lacked opportunities for trade. Its insular status meant that Christianity did not penetrate until the 4th century AD, and it was not until the Lombards invaded Siena and the surrounding territory that it knew prosperity. After the Lombard occupation, the old Roman roads of Via Aurelia and the Via Cassia passed through areas exposed to Byzantine raids, so the Lombards rerouted much of their trade between the Lombards' northern possessions and Rome along a more secure road through Siena. Siena prospered as a trading post, and the constant streams of pilgrims passing to and from Rome provided a valuable source of income in the centuries to come.

The oldest aristocratic families in Siena date their line to the Lombards' surrender in 774 to Charlemagne. At this point, the city was inundated with a swarm of Frankish overseers who married into the existing Sienese nobility and left a legacy that can be seen in the abbeys they founded throughout Sienese territory. Feudal power waned, however, and by the death of Countess Matilda in 1115 the border territory of the March of Tuscany which had been under the control of her family, the Canossa, broke up into several autonomous regions. This ultimately resulted in the creation of the Republic of Siena.

The Republic existed for over four hundred years, from the 12th century until the year 1555. During the golden age of Siena before the Black Death in 1348, the city was home to 50,000 people.

In the Italian War of 1551–59, the republic was defeated by the rival Duchy of Florence in alliance with the Spanish crown. After 18 months of resistance, Siena surrendered to Spain on 17 April 1555, marking the end of the republic.

The new Spanish King Felipe II, owing huge sums to the Medici, ceded it (apart from a series of coastal fortress annexed to the State of Presidi) to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, to which it belonged until the unification of Italy in the 19th century.

A Republican government of 700 Sienese families in Montalcino resisted until 1559.

Tuscany (/ˈtʌskəni/ TUSK-ə-nee; Italian: Toscana [tosˈkaːna]) is a region in central Italy with an area of about 23,000 square kilometres (8,900 square miles) and a population of about 3.8 million inhabitants (2013). The regional capital is Florence (Firenze).

Tuscany is known for its landscapes, history, artistic legacy, and its influence on high culture. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and has been home to many figures influential in the history of art and science, and contains well-known museums such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace. Tuscany produces wines, including Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino. Having a strong linguistic and cultural identity, it is sometimes considered "a nation within a nation".

Tuscany is a popular destination in Italy. The main tourist spots are Florence, Pisa, Castiglione della Pescaia, Grosseto and Siena. The town of Castiglione della Pescaia is the most visited seaside destination in the region, with seaside tourism accounting for approximately 40% of tourist arrivals. Additionally, the Maremma region, Siena, Lucca, the Chianti region, Versilia and Val d'Orcia are also internationally renowned and particularly popular spots among travellers.

Seven Tuscan localities have been designated World Heritage Sites: the historic centre of Florence (1982); the Cathedral square of Pisa (1987); the historical centre of San Gimignano (1990); the historical centre of Siena (1995); the historical centre of Pienza (1996); the Val d'Orcia (2004), and the Medici Villas and Gardens (2013). Tuscany has over 120 protected nature reserves, making Tuscany and its capital Florence popular tourist destinations that attract millions of tourists every year. In 2012, the city of Florence was the world's 89th most visited city, with 1.834 million arrivals." - info from Wikipedia.

Summer 2019 I did a solo cycling tour across Europe through 12 countries over the course of 3 months. I began my adventure in Edinburgh, Scotland and finished in Florence, Italy cycling 8,816 km. During my trip I took 47,000 photos.

(Continuation. Please see the texts of the earliest images of this series – my “letters from the other side”).

I answered to blinkybot38 and than decided that this answer could be the next letter. Also I want to show you this whole series without much delay, 1 photo a day. That’s sort of experiment from my side. I’d do it even faster, but this series is important to me and I want to share it as wide as I could, and there’s a lot of groups that wouldn’t let you. I already experimented with uploading photos just at the photostream (one even was in explore, thank you so much, Flickr!), I thought that I could share them later, but I didn’t. Seems that it doesn't work that way. So, that’s the letter for everybody who cares: Hope dies hard, and the place inside the system could give you some priceless advantages. Especially when there's a lot of people outside and inside it. Also we there, inside, already gained our own freedom. We could do practically everything we want. We aren't criminals after all. Just ordinary free people, artists and so on. Maybe that's one of the reasons of this nightmare situation. You could live your good and free life inside the system which isn't people-friendly, you just couldn't change the system not by the hard way (Russia wasn't democracy, the state just pretended to be and even that is over). And only when such system goes nuts, your good life is over. But then your hopes are growing as well: they are alien after all and without them is much, much better. I hope that all together we could get rid of them completely. Though I still don't know how exactly and how long could it take. Considering that we began 20 and something years ago and many of us, Russians, tried hard. Or we did it forever?

To be continued…

From the earliest days of military aviation aircraft have been parked at dispersed sites around an airfield and the crews have needed transport to their machines. Saloon cars have always been a popular form of transport, but lorries and buses have been used over the years.

Built in the early 1950s the Standard Vanguard, together with other similar vehicles, was used to transport V-bomber crews to their aircraft.

This 2.1 litre Standard Vanguard Phase I, 55 AB 66, has been restored by the Friends of the RAF Museum and is in the markings of No.138 Squadron.

Beeston Car Centre have been here since July 2008 at the earliest which can be seen in the Google street view image.

Fuel sales had long gone by then with the pumps/islands having been removed.

In the present day the roadside facing canopy sections have been smartened up, leaving the sections around the side to look rather scruffy.

This site no doubt finished it's fuel selling days as a Power branded site but also looking closer, it appears Burmah had also been a previous brand sold.

A bloomery is a type of metallurgical furnace once used widely for smelting iron from its oxides. The bloomery was the earliest form of smelter capable of smelting iron. Bloomeries produce a porous mass of iron and slag called a bloom. The mix of slag and iron in the bloom, termed sponge iron, is usually consolidated and further forged into wrought iron. Blast furnaces, which produce pig iron, have largely superseded bloomeries.

A bloomery consists of a pit or chimney with heat-resistant walls made of earth, clay, or stone. Near the bottom, one or more pipes (made of clay or metal) enter through the side walls. These pipes, called tuyeres, allow air to enter the furnace, either by natural draught or forced with bellows or a trompe. An opening at the bottom of the bloomery may be used to remove the bloom, or the bloomery can be tipped over and the bloom removed from the top.

The first step taken before the bloomery can be used is the preparation of the charcoal and the iron ore. Charcoal is nearly pure carbon which, when burned, both produces the high temperature needed for the smelting process and provides the carbon monoxide needed for reduction of the metal.

The ore is broken into small pieces and usually roasted in a fire, to make rock based ores easier to break up, bake out some impurities, and (to a lesser extent) to remove any moisture in the ore. Any large impurities (as silica) in the ore can be removed as it is crushed. The desired particle size depends primarily on which of several ore types may be available, which will also have a relationship to the layout and operation of the furnace, of which there are a number of regional, historic/traditional forms. Natural iron ores can vary considerably in oxide form (Fe2O3 / Fe3O4 / FeO(OH) ), and importantly in relative iron content. Since slag from previous blooms may have a high iron content, it can also be broken up and may be recycled into the bloomery with the new ore.

In operation, after the bloomery is preheated typically with a wood fire, shifting to burning pre-sized charcoal, iron ore and additional charcoal are introduced through the top. Again, 'traditional' methods vary, but normally smaller charges of ore are added at the start of the main smelting sequence, increasing to larger amounts as the smelt progresses. Overall a typical ratio of total charcoal to ore added will in a roughly one-to-one ratio. Inside the furnace, carbon monoxide from the incomplete combustion of the charcoal reduces the iron oxides in the ore to metallic iron without melting the ore; this allows the bloomery to operate at lower temperatures than the melting temperature of the ore. As the desired product of a bloomery is iron which is easily forgeable, it requires a low carbon content. The temperature and ratio of charcoal to iron ore must be carefully controlled to keep the iron from absorbing too much carbon and thus becoming unforgeable. Cast iron occurs when the iron absorbs 2% to 4% carbon. Because the bloomery is self-fluxing, the addition of limestone is not required to form a slag.

The small particles of iron produced in this way fall to the bottom of the furnace, where they combine with molten slag, often consisting of fayalite, a compound of silicon, oxygen and iron mixed with other impurities from the ore. The hot liquid slag, running to the bottom of the furnace, cools against the base and lower side walls of the furnace, effectively forming a bowl still containing fluid slag. As the individual iron particles form, they fall into this bowl and sinter together under their own weight, forming a spongy mass referred to as the bloom. Because the bloom is typically porous, and its open spaces can be full of slag, the extracted mass must beaten with heavy hammers to both compress voids and drive out any molten slag remaining. This process may require several additional heating and compaction cycles, working at high 'welding' temperatures. Iron treated this way is said to be wrought (worked), and the resulting iron, with reduced amounts of slag, is called wrought iron or bar iron. Because of the creation process, individual blooms can often have differing carbon contents between the original top and bottom surfaces, differences that will also be somewhat blended together through the flattening, folding and hammer welding sequences. It is also possible to produce blooms coated in steel (higher carbon) by manipulating the charge of and air flow to the bloomery.

As the era of modern commercial steelmaking began, the word bloom was extended to another sense referring to an intermediate-stage piece of steel, of a size comparable to many traditional iron blooms, that was ready to be further worked into billet. wikipedia

Cybele is an Anatolian mother goddess; she may have a possible forerunner in the earliest neolithic at Çatalhöyük.

She is Phrygia's only known goddess, and was probably its national deity.

Greek colonists in Asia Minor adopted and adapted her Phrygian cult and spread it to mainland Greece and to the more distant western Greek colonies around the 6th century BC.

The Fountain of Cybele (Spanish: Fuente de Cibeles, or simply, "La Cibeles") is a neoclassical fountain that lies on the centre of the Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid, Spain.

It has become one of the icons of the city.

Designed and commissioned by Ventura Rodríguez in 1780, the sculptural group—made of white marble from Montesclaros, is a work by Francisco Gutiérrez (who worked the goddess) and Roberto Michel (who worked the lions).

This statue of the goddess has a mural crown and rides a chariot pulled by two lions, representing Atalanta and Hippomenes.

It was moved to its current location and orientation in 1895.

The fountain is the site where Real Madrid's supporters and players gather to celebrate the team's trophies as well as partakers of the successes of the Spain national football team.

The goddess lost a hand in 1994, following a celebration of a victory of the Spanish national team.

The goddess lost again one of her hands on 21 September 2002.

The Fountain of Cybele has a replica, the namesake Fuente de Cibeles, located in Mexico City and inaugurated in 1980. (Source: Wikipedia)
