Due to the waterfalls on the Williamette (later pictures) Oregon City became an economic center in the mid-1800’s. Throughout it’s history, Oregon City has been split between a section of development on the ledge that runs just above the Williamette, and a much higher portion on the bluff above that ledge. In the early years it was simply a long climb to reach the upper portion, but in the early 1900’s there was a decision to build an elevator. The initial elevator was water-powered and very slow, but continued to be the service for many years. In the 1950’s, it was decided to replace the elevator with a more modern version, thus this.
The modern elevator’s design was heavily influenced by the fact of the 1950’s being the beginning of the atomic era, thus a design that fits with how we thought about atomic energy and the future at that time.
Riding the elevator is free, but the elevator does have an attendant (very friendly) and so the elevator is closed when the attendant takes a break. Access to the hillside is provided by steps when the elevator is closed.
