Morning everyone! Just having a quick look at Flickr...

#36 on Explore.

This is a mini-review of the Acer Aspire One above.

Bought this mini-lappy a few days ago and just finished installing most of the stuff I had planned to use on the go. It's an Acer Aspire One A150 with pre-installed WinXP SP3 on a spinny 120GB 2,5" HDD. The setup is decent for use with Photoshop CS3 with as large files as 12MP from the Nikon D300 but Adobe Camera RAW is lacking because of the low resolution screen (8,9" @ 1024x600). With a bit of patience it'll work pretty well. Installed FastStone Viewer for fast preview of all image material from the cammys, even NEF and CR2 RAW-files! Outlook 2007 works like a charm. Added bluetooth via the disappearingly small Kensington BT 2.0+EDR dongle, for wireless internet with the HTC Touch Diamond. Using a USB-cable to the phone adds a little extra speed for the broadband though since the BT would be a bit of a bottleneck at 7,2Mbits/s HSDPA.

Battery life on this jewel is roughly 2.5 hours running XP and having some tasks going. The stock battery is a 3-cell 24W piece. It's on the low side but there is an ugly but practical 6-cell battery in pipeline for this model as well with up to 7 hours of mobility. It's running on the new Intel Atom N270 HyperThreading CPU with a core speed at 1.6GHz and 533MHz FSB, fitted with 1GB of DDR2. The performance is remarkable for its low power consumption. Reports say that it's fully possible to run Vista with Aero enabled on this machine.

What hooked me to this mini-laptop was the brilliant, LED-backlit, CrystalBright screen with glossy surface. Although it may impose unwanted reflections in bright sunlight, the backlight is by far brighter than any of the Eee's and therefore outdoor usability is probably on par with the Eee PCs with matte display, despite the glare of the One. Photo colours come out brilliant on this screen and it also works decent with Spyder2Express monitor calibration tool.

Considering the large HDD capacity and humble price, it's a good alternative to a photo backup solution such as the EPSON and other similar card backup / viewers out there. I also use the machine for backing up photos taken on the run by using the photo download plugin within Adobe Bridge.

Among the negatives would be the inability to boot from either of the two built-in SDHC card readers, which would otherwise be excellent to boot a second OS like TinyVista from. Especially since there's a dedicated "Storage Expansion" SD-reader on the left side, mainly used in the Linux versions for extra added SSD-capacity. Still there's always the possibility to dualboot from the large HDD, or attaching a USB-stick or drive for experiments with other OS.

Pricetag landed on 3990 SEK when I purchased this One at Inet in Gothenburg. The Linux version is about a 1000 SEK cheaper but also has only 512MB fitted DDR2 and not enough internal space for a 2,5" HDD, and then there's the included XP Home license on top of that.

Highly recommended gear! www.acer.com/aspireone/

Ok, so I kind of made a boo-boo last night. The Boot Camp instructions say that you MUST use a Windows XP disc with SP2 integrated. Since I didn't have one on hand yet, I decided to throw caution to the wind and use my Windows XP SP1 disc instead.

Surprisingly, Windows loaded fine as did most of the drivers. There were a few snags, however, and it does seem that the Boot Camp driver disc won't load correctly.

If anything, it was a good test to see how Boot Camp handles the removal of XP from the disc. Easily, just for the record.

This is indeed a very promising tool. www.rawtherapee.com/?mitem=3&artid=47

It covers basically all of my processing needs and the options seem much more powerfull than in Lightroom!

I am indeed a bit tired of Adobe Lightroom because of some minor but important annoyances and also because I would like to go back to use Open Source software instead of having to pay 90 bucks for something that is not much more than Adobe Camera Raw with a fancy interface... I am really looking forward to have this working on the Mac natively. For now I will build a dualboot with Kubuntu as I do also want to be able to work with Krita / Koffice. I can indeed compile Koffice via Macports but Rawtherapy is giving me a hell of a lot of work and the documentation is not quite complete. Well, the author has finally decided to put all the code under the GPL... I'm so sorry that my programming skills suck.

But well, I can tell you that this tool is SUPER and encourage you to try. (It works like a charm under Win7

I try to give XP a little breathing room, and seeing as how the MacBook Pro has a 100GB drive, 20GB isn't too painful to hand over.

Earlier in the day this car had a boot only on the front wheel. Later in the day he had two.

So, I guess the reason is that if the driver were to approach his car from the driver side of the lot and get in and attempt to drive forward, the boot could mess up his car. The rear boot would prevent this scenario. Very considerate of the booter.

I'm not entirely sure how boots work, though. I've always thought that it was the arm part against the ground that prevented the car from moving. I also figured that boots were always placed on the driver side of the car so that the driver would see them. I could be wrong about all this.

Pretty funny anyway.

My current main computer dual boots from Debian Grub, giving me the option to choose either MS Windows 7 on its partion, or Ubuntu 12.04 on its own separate partitions. No, I don't use "virtual boxes." When I set up a dual boot machine I repartition the hard drive and have each Operating System live totally independent of the other.

Ubuntu now has direct access to my Windows 7 partition! I didn't have to do anything clever to set that up; it just worked! :D

The bare bones and very quiet ultimate living room Media Center Edition 2005 (Despite the 2002 displayed above) - a Core Solo Mac Mini w/512MB (480MB usable after video RAM sharing). It really works. Even the Windows MCE remote, but with the USB IR adapter, not the internal sensor. :-(

This setup is nearly silent, compared to my 4 fan HP MCE tower which is like a small jet engine in the family room.
