A few weeks ago I planted a "butterfly bush" in my back yard, hoping to attract a few visitors. This Tiger Swallowtail was my first guest, and he was so busy that he didn't seem to mind that I was up in his face, clicking away!
Dream Flight
It was a dream, I know, but so real
I flew like a bird without wing or craft but I flew.
I flew fast then slow then fast again
and the sky was above and the world was below
and I, like a dove in between, went however I wished
at will. And still I flew.
The wind whipped my face and my wide open eyes
could hardly keep up as the ground raced below.
The sound of my flight whooshed its way into
deep caverns in my ears
as the wind blew its song through my head while I flew.
Whereto I did not know, but I flew
Now seamless, undulating hills of green whizzed by at lightning speed
And I stared in wonder as nature’s palette bragged.
With the blue of the sky and the green of the green
and all the colors in between and I heard my mouth declare,
“How beautiful!” for so it was.
How I flew that day, how I flew.
Until I awoke, I was weightless and free
No fetters no shackles just me
in the sky, a creature who could fly
without wing, without craft.
