Still carving away...elaborate cascades of hair are much more interesting to carve than facial positive space. Carving on to reach the fancy vertebrae and background!

So after the Rippin' Chicken disappointing discovery, this batch is what got printed today! Woohoo! Christina @mainstreetcreations - yours is in this batch to be painted since I discovered a rip in your 1st 1. I figured you'd rather have it completely

©2012 Julia Forsyth, Silent Frozen Exhale, block printing ink hand-printed on bleached mulberry paper, 8" x 10"

Silent Frozen Exhale is linocut print inspired by Spring Noel's "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" photo: flic.kr/p/aZJiYF. She captured this owl in a quiet winter moment of silence. The collector and I really liked this unique image and were so excited when Spring Noel gave me the okay to use her image as the photo reference for my commission linocut.

Usually owls have their eyes opened, but I liked that this barred owl looked like he was super-deep in thought. Shhh....

To see how I transferred another barred owl drawing from the paper to the block, here ya go: youtu.be/qTfp-Qgy8WY

To see how I got all the paper off the linoleum block once the another barred owl drawing was successfully transferred, here ya go: youtu.be/EASccCIIhfI

©2013 Julia Forsyth, Wassily Kandinsky Concentric Circles art example for elementary, acrylic, Sharpie, paint pen, and oil pastel on cardstock, 8.5" x 11"

I'm going to be starting a new lesson tomorrow on Wassily Kandinsky and using his Farbstudie Quadrate, 1913 painting (concentric circles in squares painting) as the jumping off point. Not sure if it will be a watercolor, oil pastel, or cut construction paper for them, but I wanted to have something to show them for the basic idea of the shapes and the project for tomorrow.

First time using oil pastels - still experimenting. I had some fun blending them. It's been a while since I blended anything!

©2012 Julia Forsyth, RED HOT RAVEN, 5" x 8", block printing ink on paper plus acrylic paint on primed section of the mulberry paper (did someone say bonus?)

Well, as anyone doing an edition of linocuts knows, not every print comes out how you intended it to. This one is a little under-printed, so that made it the perfect candidate for testing out painting color on there. (I think that the under-printing gives it a certain old-timey charm, but I wouldn't want a collector to think that I thought it was printed well, if that makes any sense...)

So, warm-up painting to work out any kinks before the real painting on the next well-printed print...and go! I wasn't sure how the acrylic painting onto paper would go, so I primed it twice with white acrylic then painted two layers of alizarine crimson red over the white layers. I didn't paint any of the raven section - just the background.

The 4 layers of acrylic seemed a little too weighty for the mulberry paper, so for the "real" version that is hopefully headed to a gallery soon for a show, I primed that section of the paper on a new print (#draw365.145) with gesso. Not sure why I opted out of that the first time - ha. But that seemed to flatten out the paper more than the acrylic on acrylic did for this one.

The color versions of this print edition are all one-of-a-kind, so they're each considered an Artist Proof.

Come join me if you haven't already - I'd love to connect with you!

Gonna let it rest overnight just to make sure that I'm officially done before I print, but I think I did my final carving edits today - woohoo!

If I wake up happy with it, then somebody's gonna be printing tomorrow afternoon.
