So...this is what this project looks like after carving for many hours.
How long will this block look so pristinely lino-colored? Only until it gets inked up for printing. After inking, the ink gets absorbed into the lino's DNA and, even after all the ink is washed off, the ink residue remains. Pristine appearance post-inking? Nevermore... :)

So, I looked with an unforgiving eye at different color to surround the raven with since I've already done a red raven and a red eagle owl, but after seriously evaluating all my other acrylic colors (standard and hand-mixed) and polling some important people whose artistic input I trust, it was unanimous that red is the perfect foil for classic black and white. So red it is once again!
One big, painful mistake I made on the previous #twitterartexhibit was NOT spraying the water-soluble linocut with fixative before trying to coat the whole thing with varnish. That's the short cut to a gigantic, black-smeared, messy heartbreak. I'm one coat of fixative in - two more to go tonight. Then comes varnish time.
I am a little scared that it still might smear on me still, but I'm betting (literally betting hours of work and the time it took me to get this far already) that it will hold up after 3 coats. Cross your fingers!!
If you've fallen in love with Ruby Red Raven, Jr., stop by Exhale Unlimited Gallery in LA and snatch up! It's for sale as part of the #twitterartexhibit fundraiser.

Powered through formidable foes like the quail looking like he was sideways talking out of his beak "Bugs Bunny classic mobster style" (re carved a little) and still not finding my favorite printing spoon (used my bamboo baren) to print out a test print I'm happy with. Will be printing on better paper and adding to my Etsy store soon!

This is a linocut print of a beautiful California Quail. The California Quail's gorgeous patterned feathers, their funny plump bodies, and of course their sassy built-in accessories, their head feathers, have fascinated me for a long time. I finally made a linocut print using this bird as my inspiration. I also included lots of background greenery inspired by some foliage by our creek in our neighborhood.
This print got its start as a drawing in my sketchbook that I began while I was showing my artwork and sharing information about my summer art camps at the Farmer's Market in Chestnut Village in downtown McKinney, TX. Once I finished my drawing, I transferred it to my linoleum block. Then I carved away the white part and left all the black parts on the block. Once the carving was completed, I inked up my block with Akua intaglio ink, put my inked block on my Daniel Smith paper, and used my wooden spoon to print the ink on the paper. 10 minutes of intensely rubbing the spoon over the whole block resulted in this print. Enjoy!
Shipped flat in clear acid-free poly envelope with acid-free cardboard sandwiching the protected print. Then this clear enveloped, cardboard-protected print is slipped into an addressed plastic mailing envelope and is sent on its way!

Still carving away...elaborate cascades of hair are much more interesting to carve than facial positive space. Carving on to reach the fancy vertebrae and background!
