As I speak I'm on a ship being sent out to war, they said I'm going to the Pacific, and I'm going to be held in the Mariana islands. I don't know why I'm going there for sure, but I'm assuming we're invading Saipan. I've also met a nice guy on board, his name is Jack Watts. He also said lived in Utah before he signed up.

All of a sudden, an air raid siren started going off, and then Jack yelled: "Air attack!" As he said that, one guy said: "There's four zeros on the outer ring of the fleet!" Right as he that, I thought: "We're going to get sunk". After a lot of AA fire, one of the officers said over the loudspeaker: "Bogies down with no damage to any ships, I repeat bogies down with no damage to any ships". I felt relieved.

We arrived at HQ, and in a week and a half we'll be landing on the beaches, and I'm definitely not looking forward to it.

I went out looking to so some plein car sketching today, but no luck. I couldn't get inspired.

Luckily, though, I'd been inspired to try some still life work by the nice stuff in floodfish's stream (and website). So I sat down tonight to get the painting monkey off my back by doing some still life work.

My intention was to try to use chinese white to simulate gouache, but that didn't work out as planned.

Sketched in black prismacolor, with manganese blue and raw sienna with touches of chinese white and payne's gray watercolor in a large watercolor Moleskine.

These magnificent horses pulled the wagons and artillery of the Great War. Used in the millions by all the combatants, more than eight million horses are estimated to have died. Explosions, gas, awful weather and poor rations killed these creatures along with millions of mule.

This beautiful animal is one of several teams of horses that pull carts to carry King's Landing visitors from the main building to the village and back.

My Father passed his drafting table on to me when I left home. How could I not reproduce it in quarter scale?

they finally managed to take a key step in agreeing, Saturday, December 5, on a compromise text, which provides a basis for the adoption of a universal agreement against global warming expected to be concluded next week in Paris."The work is not finished, major political issues remain to be decided. We will need all our energy, intelligence, ability to compromise, ability to see far away to get to our result, "added Laurence Tubiana.

Chinese Immortality Tree

In Chinese mythology a Taoist story tells us of a peach magical tree that produces a peach every three thousand years. The one who eats the fruit becomes immortal. At the base of the Tree of Life is a dragon, and at the top is a phoenix (a bird). In Chinese cosmology, there are four Dragon Kings (Qin, Kuang, Jun and Xun), each with his own elemental domain.

In Egyption mythology, the first couple are Isis and Osiris. They have emerged from the acacia tree of Iusaaset, which the Egyptians considered the tree of life. Egyptians considered the Tree of Life to be the tree in which life and death are enclosed. The direction East was associated with the direction of Life, the direction of the rising Sun, and the direction West was seen as the direction of death, of under-world, because Sun sets in the West. Egyptian creation myths refer to a serpent and a primordial egg, which contained a bird of light..The tree legend became the Hebrew legend of Garden of Eden. In the centre of the Garden of Eden grew the Tree of Life guarded by a snake. The main river flowing from Eden to water the garden spread into four major directions.Within the Ortodox Church the cross of Christ is also referred to as the Tree of Life. The cross is a symbol of life, the union of heaven and earth, and spirit and matter. It also represents the centre, meeting the divine in the human heart. The arms extend into the four directions. The Tree of Life that is in the centre of Kabbalah’s symbolism can be studied as a complex formula of existence, the flow of creation from the Divine to Earth and back to the Divine. It is the Tree of Life and Knowledge, a magical key to how life manifests itself. The Tree of Life is comprised of ten sephiroth, with twenty-two paths interconnecting them. The Kabbalah is a magical framework for the Hebrews' mystical thoughts. The left column is called the Pillar of Severity. It represents the female aspect of creation and contains three sephira: Binah (Understanding), Geburah (Severity) and Hod (Splendor). The right column is called the Pillar of Mercy. It represents the male aspects of creation and contains three sephira: Chokmah (Wisdom), Chesed (Mercy) and Netzach (Victory). The middle pillar is called the Pillar of Equilibrium. It represents the balance between the male and female pillars. It contains four sephira: Kether (Crown), Tiphareth (Beauty), Yesod (Foundation) and Malkuth (Kingdom).

Camp draft is an Australian rodeo event. The rider must first cut a beast out of a yard (corral?) containing about 10 beasts. Once the beast has been cut out, the yard gate is opened and the rider must guide the beast around a figure of eight course and then through a final gap.

Very exciting. And you have to like an event where the competitors wear ties.

I ran into hockey legend Dennis Polonich, while he was walking his dogs in Calgary, Alberta.

Dennis "Polo" Polonich (born December 4, 1953 in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan) is a retired professional ice hockey centre who spent his entire NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings. He was selected in the eighth round, 118th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. Polonich became a full-time Red Wing in the 1975–76 NHL season. Polonich brought an instant force to the team and started wreaking havoc in the highest league in hockey. Polonich set a club record on March 24, 1976 by sitting out eight penalties – five minors, a major and a misconduct. In the 1976–77 season Polonich had a short tenure as captain of the Detroit Red Wings while Danny Grant was injured. He finished second on the team in scoring with 46 points and first on the team (second in the league behind Tiger Williams) in penalty minutes with 274. On October 25, 1978, Polonich got under the skin of the Colorado Rockies' Wilf Paiement. In what has been termed as the worst-ever case of brutality in the NHL, Paiement (6'1", 210 lbs) smashed Polonich (5' 6", 166 lbs) across the face with his stick, leaving Polonich with a concussion, severe facial lacerations, and a broken nose requiring reconstructive surgery. Polonich sued, and was rewarded with a settlement of $850,000. Polonich suffered from breathing problems for the remainder of his career. After 390 NHL games, Poonich played his final major league game during the 1982–83 season, and retired as a professional hockey player in 1987.
