Following the River Kinder towards its source. Kinder Downfall is just in shot on the right.

A New Year visit to the downfall. I would have liked a greater water flow but one has to accept what is there at the time. One intrepid person climbed to the bottom of the cascade! He didn’t climb any higher but at least he gives some scale to the scene.

All is quiet on the CN Lac La Biche Subdivision, as a trio of SD40s rest with train L557 in tow, waiting to head to Fort McMurray as L553.

Before CN took over, the railroad was originally the Alberta and Great Waterways Railroad. The original plan in 1909 was to lay the track away from the Lac La Biche community, around the west end of the lake. Before construction neared the Lac La Biche region, controversy and uproar over the railroad caused the collapse of the provincial government at the time, as premier Alexander Rutherford resigned.

When railway contractor J.D. McArthur took over the railroad, he revised the route to pass through the community of Lac La Biche, with the dream of tourism and timber in mind.

Rails reached Lac La Biche in 1915, and in 1919, the railroad reached it's destination of Fort McMurray. That same year, a forest fire decimated Lac La Biche, leaving only the railroad depot and inn that McArthur had constructed. During the fire, a train even plowed through the destruction to save people.

Eventually, the provincial government took over again, and Canadian National took over completely in the 1980's, after CN bought out Canadian Pacific's shares of the railroad. From hauling supplies and personnel in second World War, to uranium for the Manhattan Project, to today's freight of coke and sulfur, the Lac La Biche Subdivision has a lot of neat history for both the province and the country.

Downfall will come before it all ... series

____

Downfall, look beside you

Don't crawl, do remind you

Downfall will come before anything at all

Downfall, it defines you

Don't stall, do remind you

Downfall will come before

Downfall, downfall

Not all for nothing

Careful, can divide you

Don't dwell on behind

Downfall will come before it all

Everything I have come

Everything I have come to lose

Downfall, downfall

Not all for nothing

Two sides polarising

Seeing blind, it's mesmerising

We're chasing time, chasing in, in

Two sides polarising

Seeing blind, it's mesmerising

We're chasing time to lose

Downfall, downfall

Not all for nothing

Pieces of my hope

Blisters with no rope

Lifting till I float

I'll cope, I'll cope

Downfall, look beside you

Don't crawl, do remind you

Downfall will come before

Kinder Downfall, where the River Kinder plunges off Kinder Scout in a spectacular waterfall. When a strong westerly wind blows, like here, some of the water is blown back up onto the plateau.

It didn't quite work out for yesterday's sunset. The wind was really strong on Kinder Scout. That meant I couldn't shoot from the top of the fall due to the river blowing back up. Even here I had to play peek-a-boo on the lens with a cloth. I'll keep trying for the shot I want.

Ezekiel 31:16 “From the sound of its downfall I caused nations to shake when I made it go down to Sheol, with [the people] going down to [the] grave, and [so] in [the] world below all of the trees of Eden, [the] choice and the best of Lebanon, {all the well-watered trees} were comforted!”

The Met Office prediction led me up the garden path yesterday. Constantly being updated then settling on the reality of clear skies. Still a nice evening to be out, apart from the midges. First time I've seen a Dragonfly at Kinder Downfall.
