Doug Allan has passed away, and with him, a certain kind of fieldcraft and endurance that defined an era of natural history filmmaking.
Doug stood in the kind of places most people will never feel on their skin. The cold there is not just temperature. It is pressure. It pushes into your lungs, your joints, your thinking. When I photographed him in Antarctica, at the South Pole, he moved through that environment with a familiarity that felt almost improbable. Not bravado. Not performance. Just a man who had spent a lifetime returning to the edge until it became a kind of home.
Doug was one of the great wildlife cameramen of our time. His work on Blue Planet, Planet Earth, and Frozen Planet didn’t just show us the natural world. It changed how we understand it. He brought us under the ice, into storms, into moments of raw survival and unexpected beauty. Not as spectacle, but as something real and immediate.
What stayed with me was his steadiness. No drama. No ego. Just a deep respect for the animals, the conditions, and the long process of getting it right. Days or weeks of nothing, and then a moment that made it all worth it. He understood that kind of patience in a way few people do.

*On a personal note: We didn't want to bother Doug when we saw him eating dinner after the show with his family, but I had to say something as I walked past him. I said, "Thank you Sir, for 50 years of enjoying your shows!" He reached out to shake my hand, with BOTH of his hands, and graciously responded with his own thanks! What a warm man! - Unbelievably, 2 weeks before, he 'friended' us on Facebook and invited us to join one of his 4 Facebook pages!

Caught By A In Southern Alberta
Today's story and sketch "by me" we see Doug Gofish piloting his Anion Anti Grav 37 Glider, in front of Doug's Date Moon Pie Store here in Indio California, Doug has just treated two (sisters Darla and Deb Kagler),
from Lippo the Blue Moon, to a week in nearby Palm Springs. Darla won the Moon Pie eating contest at the Koni
Crater Fair, two weeks ago and with the first prize, a weeks stay in Palm Springs, Doug was the Judge and had a hard
time letting the runner up Deb stay behind, she had only eaten one moon pie less than sister Darla, that being 42 pies in
the two minute contest. Which was quite close to the Lippo Moon record of 45 pies in two minutes. But let us get back
to the story of Doug's Date Moon Pie shop, and how it was that Doug arrived here in Indio about a thousand years
ago when he was a young grey alien youth, from the Koni Crater on lippo. After graduating from college with a degree
in Horticulture, Doug loaded up a transporter and came to Earth looking for a unique fruit filling for moon pie's.
Doug's professor had told him about a fruit he had found when he had traveled to Earth himself many years before
in a place he had landed to take a walkabout, he named it Indus which was short for (incredibly nasty dusty uninhabitable stop). But he did write in his notebook about a fruit tree that was nearly a hundred feet high and very hard to climb.
But that the fruit was tasty if you were brave enough to climb for it. Doug charted a course for Indus as shown on
the professors Earth map, and he had no problem finding the trees, they were in fact very very tall and loaded with
long clusters of dates. Doug set up a campsite, put on his tree climbing spikes and climbed up, tree after tree gathering
dates. With the portable moon pie kitchen set up and ready to go, Doug created the first date moon pies. Wanting to
get some customer feedback, Doug had noticed a lot of human workmen erecting a very large pyramid shaped building when
he was in low orbit looking for the trees, he went back to where the pyramid was being built and walked up
to the terrified workers, who noticed Doug was four feet tall grey and had very large black eyes, but their fear turned to joy when the workman ate the first moon pies on Earth. Doug gave each man a pie and the story was carved into the pyramid walls and is still readable today. Doug saved all of the date seeds, flew back into a low orbit and
found this area now known as Indio, which is really not so different from Indus, but is closer to Palm Springs.
He planted the seeds and they grew into a forest of Date Palms, and the fruit used for his Date Moon Pies.

The line is closed for engineering. Barry Bullhead, the time & motion man from the ministry arrives to monitor Doug the track ganger. Before working on the railway, Doug was a 7 times winner of the West of England grave digging awards. He could put a body 6 feet under in under 6 minutes. I wouldn’t want to be Barry.
Doug is such an interesting person.

Doug was still deaf today and said he was feeling isolated because people no longer talked to him. I communicated by writing on my phone and he was able to answer coherently. He is 94 and looked today a little world weary.

Doug used to be a biker. But after a couple of falls, he had to give up biking and bought himself a Ford Mustang (the dark blue car you can seen behind him).
I met Doug and his daughter Robin in Green Gardens Park, Shilshole Bay, Seattle. He told me he as been throwing the sling since he was 12. He is in his mid 40s now. Sweetest daughter! He told me the technique in popular imagination how David used sling is wrong. You don't twirl it around. He then showed me which rocks to choose how to place it in the leather holder, generate the proper momentum and how to let go of the end to let the rock fly at top speeds . He even demo'd me how he has killed rattlesnake with sling. Doug and Robin were two of the loveliest and most friendly persons I have met so far in Seattle.
Doug is a cooper at Middleton Place. As you can tell from this photo, Doug is quite a character. Very educated on all things "coopering", Doug is very interesting to listen to when he talks about his craft.

What an interesting story of how I met Doug, and his son Alex!
I was coming out of work, and as I stepped out the door I saw a gentleman walking along the building with a young boy with him. The rather pleasant gentleman asked if there were any nature walking trails nearby. I started to describe the trails around town then decided that we were really too close to city centre to access any reasonable walking trails; so I offered Doug and his son Alex a ride to a good trail. As we were driving he told me that he and his son are performers on the cruise ship that had docked for the day. He and his son have a 'violin show' they do for the cruise ship passengers. Both he and his son (and other family members) are very accomplished musicians!
I suggested to Doug that I could give him and Alex a real tour and take them for a ride over the mountain to the Skeena River before they had to re-board the ship.
So we went for an hour and a half long trip with several stops along the river and a nearby lake where Alex could toss a fish hook in for a while. We enjoyed a lot of conversation about American politics and the performing arts industry. Doug is from the East coast of Florida, but is living with his Australian wife in Los Angeles to take advantage of the show business industry.
It was really quite a delightful meeting of two strangers, and I relish in our time together. Doug was kind enough to give me a signed copy of his latest CD: Different Hats [I well imagine is suggests his ability to play many, many genres on the violin].
