Skin: Doug - Tone 07 by Stray Dog, available at TMD then at the mainstore.

Eyes: Legend - Field by IKON, available at TMD then at the mainstore. I am touched and humbled at being sent the pack, and considering it's my go-to place for eyeballs, I'm stoked!

"Rich Border, roving reporter for Ghost Writers Magazine, here with the spirit of Douglas Fir. Doug, can you tell our audience about your fateful day?"

"Well I'll tell ya Rich, it was a Sunday morning as you know, I was standing here on this ridgeline with thousands of my friends swaying gently in the breeze soaking up some water and taking in the rays I was three hundred years old at the time so I was just getting my day started when all of a sudden the Earth began to shake. That's when the mountain that I'd spent my whole life admiring, you know they called it the Fuji of the North West because she had the most perfectly shaped dome, that's when the front of the mountain exploded and collapsed, I don't remember anything after that."

"Well thank you for that rousing interview Mr. Fir, back to you Walter."

"And that's the way it was."

When I asked him to describe himself in a few words, he said "Galactic Librarian, Orion Sector”.

These seem different than the last one I found on a Doug fir cone. That one was glowing white. My days of including a sunny Bokeh are about over for the season, rainy days.

Very few photographers took the time to cross the Price River and hike into the west end of Castle Gate. Even fewer captured this perspective from the north side of the tracks. Doug was known for exploring new angles, and was not afraid to do a little hiking to reach that end.

This is one of Doug's earliest photos of the Rio Grande Zephyr. The perspective offers a broad view of 100 ft. tall Castle Gate and the south side of the canyon where in 1966, UDOT blasted away the second gate formation to widen US Hwy. 6.

Also of note is the silver combine car (behind the block signal). D&RGW management experimented to see if silver would better match the Budd cars. In less than a year, it was repainted Aspen Gold to match the F9s and Steam Generator car.

Eccovi l'assolo: "Don't Laugh At Me"

Sidney Earl, Jr Photo • Doug Harrop Collection • August 12, 1992

Mr. Harrop enjoyed an extended vacation to the eastern United States and Canada in the summer of 1992. Friend Sidney Earl, Jr. captured this fine portrait of Doug at Sand Patch in Pennsylvania.

Doug packed two cameras with him that day. A 35mm SLR for color slide film and a large format camera for black & white film.

Here he is at a property he owns near my house. I saw him working on my way home, stopped for a quick chat, and couldn't ignore that great light.

Yikes, I've been tagged by Faeryboots. So here are 16 things you may not know about me, or may soon wish you didn't. For extra fun, try matching them up with the photos above ...

[16] Favorite magazine: the Economist. Read an issue, and you're ready to make small talk with businesspersons anywhere in the world for the next week or two. Repeat as needed.

[15] Last two movies I've seen: Dirty Harry and After Hours, both for the second time. Last two movies I've seen for the first time: Burn After Reading and Darjeeling Limited.

[14] Don't let that flurry of moves in the last couple of years fool you; I've seen very few movies, of any kind, ever. Small talk about movies is nerve-wracking, because I'm at constant risk of exposing my ignorance and being like that calculus teacher I had long ago, who when he overheard a few students at the back of the room discussing an upcoming Led Zeppelin concert at the Coliseum ("Key Arena" to kids these days), sauntered on back to join us, nonchalantly interjecting "oh Led Zeppelin, he's gonna be back in town, eh?" while casually dangling a bell-bottomed high-water trouser leg over the edge of a desk. You had to be there. Anyway, I want to create moments like that, which live on in other people's memories for decades to come, as that one does in mine; if my photography doesn't get the job done, perhaps my awkward small talk will.

[13] The CD I have listened to more than any other is probably either "Shaming of the True" by Kevin Gilbert or "Action Packed: Best of the Capitol Years" by Richard Thompson. They've surely surpassed all the NIN CDs, Talking Heads cassettes, and Alice Cooper vinyl that I've worn out in the past. MP3? What's that?

[12] My ride: '99 Ford Ranger, which I bought for $8600 cash at a wholesale auto auction on May 6, 2004. Three days after I bought it, I hit a deer so hard that its feet flew off. (I'll spare you that photo.) After a sweet deal on repairs at the body shop, I resolved to drive it into the ground, and am about half done doing so. Last time I had a car payment: 1999.

[11] Ike pesters me while I'm at my computer more than anyone knows, thus justifying my cruel treatment of him.

[10] I don't know how to use a TV remote. I generally ask Megan to set the TV to a channel I'd like to watch, although lately I've taken to just saying "is there anything funny on TV tonight?" (She usually answers "no, not tonight, Dear.")

[9] I have a thing for Defender. Tad thinks I've lost my edge. Screw Tad.

Rematch, Super Bowl Sunday.

[8] Five countries I want to see: Tunisia, Mali, Dubai (UAE), Burma, Argentina. I started to type a list of five countries I don't ever want to see, too, but then I realized I probably shouldn't. Some things don't translate well.

[7] Five countries I want to see again: India, Czech Republic, Cuba, Ukraine, Mexico.

[6] My next lens: Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 VR. It's a bit pricey, but I'd just like to point out (to nobody in particular) that in inflation-adjusted terms a Nikon pro zoom or prime lens is always worth about a month's groceries, and in today's real estate market that makes it a better investment than our next mortgage payment. Just sayin'.

[5] Next lens after the 70-200mm: Based on all the leading economic indicators, I'll probably have to cut back to only a 50mm F1.4 and nothing else, sell the other lenses, and use the proceeds to buy groceries during the coming global depression. But the D700 will never go; they'll pry it from my cold starving fingers some day.

[4] I grew up on Puget Sound, and can be nostalgic about it. We even got married on the shore of the Sound.

[3] First year I voted for a Presidential candidate who won: 2008. It's really too bad I didn't get registered the year I turned 18, though, because I might have voted for the winner that year too.

[2] Biggest regret in life ... that we don't have a sled dog right now. But Megan has subscribed to email litter alerts from a few breeders, and it's hard to imagine we'll hold out for long now.

[1] I'm not like the Illinois governor: I know Kipling, but I know better than to recite it in public. A juicy Oscar Wilde or H. L. Mencken quote, on the other hand ... my will gets weak in the face of such temptation. And don't let me near a piano after drinking unless you really want to hear some Leonard Cohen tonight.

OK, I think I made it. And now the final step is that you're supposed to tag 16 other people. But, but, but ... I don't know 16 people on Flickr yet. Oh well, if you know me and haven't shared 16 things, consider yourself tagged!

Once in a while, you meet a dog that you know you will not forget. Doug, a registered assistance dog is one of those. A beautiful friendly soul.

OK - not taken in The Wild, here is a citizen of The Bronx Zoo. The zoo is known for large habits, I enjoyed zooming away at Bear, Zebra, Giraffes, and even took an x rated pic of mating mongoose.

Had some of the best country songs and albums of the early to mid 90's. "I Don't Call Him Daddy", "Between the Red and Rio Grande", "Not Enough Hours in the Night", "What'll You Do About Me". I really miss him from the country scene. God, he was hot.

Big Lonely Doug stands in the middle of a clearcut near Port Renfrew. It was left standing, most likely to provide cones for the reseeding of the forest. This is Canada's second largest Douglas Fir. It's estimated to be 1000 years old. It measures 12 meters (39 feet) in circumference. A group recently climbed to the top of Big Lonely Doug in order to directly measure its height by dropping a line from the top of the tree down to its base. Big Lonely Doug was found to be 66 metres (216 feet) in height. Higher than a 20 story building! The area was clearcut in 2012.

These are two of my favorite people and i suddenly realized I'd never

freaked when I said I was going to use it in my final portfolio. I did it anyways.

The University of Washington bought it for a safe sex campaign - it was

my first commercial sale. So there!

Doug Allan has passed away, and with him, a certain kind of fieldcraft and endurance that defined an era of natural history filmmaking.

Doug stood in the kind of places most people will never feel on their skin. The cold there is not just temperature. It is pressure. It pushes into your lungs, your joints, your thinking. When I photographed him in Antarctica, at the South Pole, he moved through that environment with a familiarity that felt almost improbable. Not bravado. Not performance. Just a man who had spent a lifetime returning to the edge until it became a kind of home.

Doug was one of the great wildlife cameramen of our time. His work on Blue Planet, Planet Earth, and Frozen Planet didn’t just show us the natural world. It changed how we understand it. He brought us under the ice, into storms, into moments of raw survival and unexpected beauty. Not as spectacle, but as something real and immediate.

What stayed with me was his steadiness. No drama. No ego. Just a deep respect for the animals, the conditions, and the long process of getting it right. Days or weeks of nothing, and then a moment that made it all worth it. He understood that kind of patience in a way few people do.

Fair winds and following seas, Doug.

I made this portrait as part of my New Heroes project, which is about spending time with the people shaping our future and trying to see them clearly, as they are.

If Doug Squirrel's fur looks wet, it's because it was a very rainy day. Just as squirrels don't get snow days, rain isn't an excuse for sleeping until noon. Even with shorter days, Doug works at gathering his winter larder well into the evening.

All work and no play makes Doug a dull squirrel, so he does take breaks to scurry up one of his trees and bark nonstop for ten or fifteen minutes. Then it's back to work.

He shares his seed block with a trio of Steller's jays. They leave each other alone while keeping a joint lookout for the neighbor's cat. Afternoon will see the arrival of a chipmunk who is tamius non gratus as far as Doug Squirrel is concerned.

*On a personal note: We didn't want to bother Doug when we saw him eating dinner after the show with his family, but I had to say something as I walked past him. I said, "Thank you Sir, for 50 years of enjoying your shows!" He reached out to shake my hand, with BOTH of his hands, and graciously responded with his own thanks! What a warm man! - Unbelievably, 2 weeks before, he 'friended' us on Facebook and invited us to join one of his 4 Facebook pages!
