The Animal Control Girl (from CMF series 15, whom I found on the flea market recently) fighting off a lesser stag beetle.

Yes, the light is awful, but you have to take the picture where you find these little buggers.

This beauty is the smaller cousin of our more well known stag beetle (Lucanus cervus). They also rely on dead wood for a large part of their life cycle. But instead of laying their eggs in rotting wood underground, they use wood and tree stumps above the ground. While smaller than the big stag, compared to most other beetles they’re still bloody massive!

Balkenschröter (Dorcus parallelipipedus)

Well, I wasn't expecting to find this beauty in the office last night!!! How on earth did she (I think) get in? Rather preferable to a bat tick in any case!!

Anyway, I popped her back outside after taking a couple of shots.

A little friend from my garden, chilling in the setting sun.

Another photo from my trip to Fineshade Woods and another new species for me, a lesser stag beetle. A fascinating beetle to watch as it rummaged around some dead logs

He is having fun playing in the pool.

It's cat water. His shower is put on my finger and washed in the tap. He seems to love the shower. No problem because he's completely waterproof

We ensure that there is no introgression, avoid successive mating, and pass on the three gene groups to the next generation.

Two lesser stags, in a chainsaw slot within a felled tree stump. Nice to see!

25mm a real whopper. On dead Crack Willow. A first for me. It played dead for a while, on its back with its legs in the air, then flipped itself over and crawled into a crack in the log.
