The 2-3 cm large lesser stag beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus) has recently appeared in my garden. The reason could be the neighboring forests, where the foresters now leave a lot of dead wood on the ground, or repeatedly leave dead old trees as biotope trees. Like the Europaen stag beetle Lucanus cervus, the lesser stag beetle feed on tree sap and lay their eggs in dead wood, where the larvae develop for 2-3 years. After subsequent short pupal rest, the imposing beetle hatches.
The beetle is a protected species in Germany. The beetle in the picture landed on my house vine and was photographed there.
Our Local Wood. Kent UK,
I watched this beetle for about 10 minutes trying to climb up this single stem. Up about 4 inches then slide down 2.
Quite pointless actually as it was only 2 feet high and a foot out from the pond edge.....can it swim??

Ciołek matowy (Dorcus parallelipipedus) idący po ziemi.
The Lesser Stag beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus) is smaller with much less impressive antlers than the Great Stag, its more famous big cousin, and it is a beautiful beetle, much more common and also lives much longer as the beetle than the Great stag. This specimen was found on the bathroom floor (may have been attracted by light or just by the open window). It was released after a short photo session in the garden. Bath, BANES, England, U.K.
A huge beautiful male Lesser Stag Beetle I came across in my garden yesterday..I was sorry to leave him, he was absolutely magnificent. :)
