These notebooks have the title to an original song, "Tread Not On Me," by John Robert Conley on the front cover. The inside front cover has the lyrics in their entirety. The back cover has the chorus imprinted over a photo taken of the Georgia and the American flag at the Historic Gwinnett County Courthouse in Lawrenceville. On the inside back cover, the lyrics to another original composition is imprinted. This song is "Blurring the Lines."

I made this last New Year's Day for this blog post, but only realized today, while browsing through some archives, that I'd never posted it to Flickr.

Many areas of Yosemite Valley are off limits in order to restore and/or preserve native plant species.

my recent tattoo...lookin all fresh still.

This LF antenna is placed on the bow and had a version of the Revolutionary War flag that had the motto "Don't Tread on Me". The USS Iowa was moved from Richmond, CA to San Pedro, CA for permanent display. The restoration is first class. Access to the battleship is virtually unlimited showing all the significant areas and really gives one a sense of what this ship was all about.

Please note that many thousands of people were streaming OUT from the rally while many thousands continued to stream in at 12:28 PM [rally began at 10 AM]. The foreground shows where 10's of thousands of people sat. They are on the grounds of the Washington Memorial. In front of them is the WWII Memorial which was packed. He was a patriot for the United States in the Revolutionary War. One of the leading patriots in South Carolina, he designed the yellow flag with a snake on it that said, Don't Tread on Me. This would become the United States war cry throughout the war. He also signed the Association. He is buried at St Philips Churchyard in Charleston, SC.

Side A - Midnight Hour.

Side B - Don't Tread On Me.

With a change of members, the group hit the big time with their second 45, a fuzzed-up version of “Midnight Hour”. It was picked up by Philips for national distribution in late 1966, mainly on the strength of the a-side. That’s a fine cover version, but it’s the b-side, Kit’s original “Don’t Tread on Me”, that gets the attention nowadays. The first BlacKnight pressings list the band as “The Outlaws”, later pressings read “Kit and the Outlaws.”

After about a year of playing night clubs in Dallas we recorded the record Midnight Hour/ Don’t Tread on Me. The Sellars Studio was close to downtown [2102 Jackson Street]. I sang on the song Don’t Tread on Me, as background. We had it pressed on the Black Knight Label. Frank Jolly at KBOX really liked us and would play the song every night, Finally all the DJ’s at KBOX started playing the song and it went up the charts. [It reached #1 on KBOX on December 2, 1966.] We were shocked that it was doing so good. KLIF wouldn’t play it cause we wern’t with a major record label.

Thanks to Bob Sanders, the recording engineer for the Celler studio and our manager, we got signed to a 5 year contract with Philips. And changed our name to Kit and the Outlaws.

Members included:

Kit Massengill – lead vocals and rhythm guitar

Dennis Lowe – lead guitar

Jerry Colwell – keyboards

Alan Rafkin – bass

Joe Jesmer – drums

I took liberties with an old design originally created by Benjamin Franklin [c. 1754] titled 'Join, Or Die' for an upcoming t-shirt/print show at Fugscreen Studios [July 8th].

"...'Join, or Die' is a well-known political cartoon, created by Ben Franklin and first published in his Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754. The original publication by the Gazette is the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by a British colonist in America. It is a woodcut showing a snake severed into eighths, with each segment labeled with the initials of a British American colony or region. New England was represented as one segment, rather than the four colonies it was at that time. In addition, Delaware and Georgia were omitted completely. Thus, it has 8 segments of snake rather than the traditional 13 colonies. The cartoon appeared along with Franklin's editorial about the "disunited state" of the colonies, and helped make his point about the importance of colonial unity. During that era, there was a superstition that a snake which had been cut into pieces would come back to life if the pieces were put together before sunset. It is also noted that the snake [a rattlesnake] was chosen because it is native to the America's & by nature, does not strike unless provoked..."

Appropriately enough, this fireplace is in the Jefferson Suite. Are the tiles not brilliant? I prefer "Don't Tread On Me" and "Live Free or Die", though it seems the meanings have been lost of late between those who prefer license or totaltarianism to true liberty. Still, this has meaning too, today just as it did then.

Do enjoy large.

The famous Gadsden Flag is a symbol of American independence since the Revolutionary War. Why a snake? Here's what Ben Franklin wrote:

"I recollected that her eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids—She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance.—She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage.—As if anxious to prevent all pretensions of quarreling with her, the weapons with which nature has furnished her, she conceals in the roof of her mouth, so that, to those who are unacquainted with her, she appears to be a most defenseless animal; and even when those weapons are shewn and extended for her defense, they appear weak and contemptible; but their wounds however small, are decisive and fatal:—Conscious of this, she never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.—Was I wrong, Sir, in thinking this a strong picture of the temper and conduct of America?"

Today, it is a popular symbol of defiance to the overstep of the Federal government. We are watching you, Feds, and we are rattling a warning. Take heed.
