Le mois de mars marque la commémoration d’un an de la pandémie de COVID-19 au Québec. Bien que l’espoir soit à l’horizon avec des mesures strictes de prévention sanitaire et l’arrivée de vaccins, la montée du racisme anti-asiatique semble s’aggraver.
Depuis le début de la pandémie, les membres des communautés asiatiques du Québec ont été physiquement et verbalement agressés, poignardés et même frappés par des voitures. Nos artefacts religieux, culturels et nos commerces ont également été vandalisés.
En Amérique du Nord et partout au Canada, les membres des communautés asiatiques et des peuples autochtones sont attaqués. Vancouver a signalé une augmentation de 717 % des crimes haineux contre les Asiatiques, tandis que le SPVM a signalé une augmentation de cinq fois plus de crimes haineux envers les asiatiques.
Alors que nous regardons les reportages d’Atlanta sur le tireur qui a assassiné 6 femmes asiatiques hier, nous essayons toujours de comprendre la violence dans nos propres communautés. Pas plus tard que cette semaine à Montréal, un homme d’origine coréenne a été attaqué au gaz poivré en plein jour. N'oublions pas le double délit de fuite à Brossard, en septembre, qui tua deux personnes de nos communautés: Huiping Ding (45 ans) et Gérard Chong Soon Yuen (50 ans).
Les communautés asiatiques du Québec en ont assez. Nous descendrons dans la rue le dimanche 21 mars, à l’occasion de la Journée internationale pour l’élimination de la discrimination raciale, pour nous élever contre le racisme anti-asiatique et toutes les formes de discrimination raciale. ***Les masques et la distance sociale seront maintenus, ainsi que la possibilité de participer virtuellement.***
Joignez-vous à nous à 13 h à Cabot Square, où nous nous rendrons à Chinatown pour exiger que le gouvernement prenne des mesures efficaces pour mettre fin à la discrimination raciale.

Ce sera l’occasion pour les collectivités touchées de pleurer ensemble en toute solidarité et d’honorer la vie de ceux que nous avons perdus et d’attirer l’attention sur les conditions des travailleuses du sexe.

The month of March marks the one-year commemoration of the covid-19 pandemic in Québec. Although hope is on the horizon with strict health prevention measures and the arrival of vaccines, the rise of anti-Asian racism appears to be worsening.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, members of Asian communities in Québec have been physically and verbally assaulted, stabbed, and even hit by cars. Our religious, cultural and commercial artefacts have also been vandalized.
This is in line with what has been happening across North America. Across Canada, members of other Asian communities and Indigenous peoples have also been attacked. Some have been mistaken for being of East Asian descent. Vancouver reported a 717% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes while the SPVM reported a five-fold increase in hate crimes towards asian communities.
As we reel from the reports from Atlanta of the gunman who murdered 6 Asian women yesterday, we are still trying to make sense of the violence in our own communities. Just this week in Montreal, a man of Korean origin was attacked with pepper-spray in broad day light. Let’s not forget the double hit-and-run in Brossard in September, which killed two members of our communities: Huiping Ding (age 45) and Gérard Chong Soon Yuen (age 50).
Asian communities in Québec have had enough. We are taking to the streets on Sunday March 21, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to stand up against anti-Asian racism and all forms of racial discrimination.
***Masks and social distance will be maintained, as well as the option to participate virtually.***
Please join us at 1:00pm at Cabot Square, where we will march to Chinatown to demand effective government action in ending racial discrimination.

Following the march, Stella, l’amie de Maimie, an organization by and for sex workers, will be hosting a vigil in Chinatown to commemorate the victims of the attack on Asian massage parlors in Atlanta. This will be a moment for affected communities to grieve together in solidarity and to honour the lives of those we’ve lost and to bring attention to the work conditions of Asian sex workers.

I work at a college - (ironically on High Street) where there are lots of kids who are experiencing independence for the first time. They have the freedom to choose whether to maybe get high or study. I think even though some colleges have a reputation for being party schools, the majority of students make the right decision and make the most of their education. We have an extraordinary amount of graduates who have done amazing things in the world that really do make a difference.

In the second time in as many months, idiots in the neighborhood smashed out my rear window. This time they also took out my rearview side mirror. While I understand that some folks may not like an artcar, they don't have to do this. Please help me find out who these jerks are in order to publicly shame them. What a sorry ass life they must have if this is how they get their thrills. Someone must have heard people talking about this....I dare you to do the right thing and let me know who they are. Your identity will remain a secret....and there is cash and good karma....or should I say, carma!
I decided it was high time to see Do the Right Thing after watching a clip that Spike Lee made combining footage from the movie with the video of Eric Garner dying. Heavy stuff. It was a little trippy when the movie started and I realized it revolves around a pizza place named Sal's since I just got a job at a pizza place named Sal's.
Also, lately I've been asking myself after every movie if it passes the Bechdel Test. Have you heard of this? It goes like this:
1. It has to have at least two women in it,
2. who talk to each other,
3. about something besides a man.
I think Do the Right Thing might squeak by because there's a scene where Rosie Perez argues with her Mom about babysitting. The subtext though is that she needs a babysitter because the father of her baby is not around as much as he should be.
We also watched Out of Africa last week and despite having a strong female character, I think it fails the test. It's interesting to think about because "it articulates something often missing in popular culture: not the number of women we see on screen, but the depth of their stories, and the range of their concerns." (quote from the Bechdel test wikipedia page).
