Widely distributed throughout Britain & Ireland, this tiny songbird vies with the closely-related Firecrest for the title of our smallest breeding bird.

Being so small (5-6 g), Goldcrests are vulnerable in cold weather, and as such numbers fluctuate depending on the harshness of the seasons. In winter, the resident Goldcrest population is bolstered by arrivals from Fennoscandia, and impressive numbers can sometimes be found on the east coast in the autumn, recovering in the dunes after their long flight across the North Sea.

Despite their small size, female Goldcrests can lay up to 12 eggs in a clutch (one and a half times an adult's bodyweight). Goldcrests have an overall olive appearance, with their eponymous stripe on the top of their heads, which is more orange in males and yellow in females. Goldcrests can often be seen searching trees, especially conifers, for small invertebrate prey. Their high-pitched, repetitive song can also be a good way to find one.

Distributed from western Venezuela to northwest Peru, the Bronze-winged Parrot is mainly found in humid forested areas below 2800 m, and seems to be partially nomadic in parts of its range, for example in parts of Colombia.

It is a rather distinctive bird, given that the only similar species is the Dusky Parrot (Pionus fuscus) of the geographically far-removed Guianan Shield. The Bronze-winged Parrot is mainly bronze-brown to very dark blue, with an obvious pale orbital ring, a yellow-colored bill, white-flecked chin, and deep red ventral underparts. Its ecology and behavior have not been subject to intensive study, but the species remains at least locally common, especially in southwest Colombia and parts of western Ecuador.

Gasteracantha cancriformis (spinybacked orbweaver) is a species of orb-weaver spider (family Araneidae). It is widely distributed in the New World.

The genus name Gasteracantha derives from the Greek words γαστήρ (gaster, "belly") and ἄκανθα (acantha, "thorn"), while the specific epithet cancriformis derives from the Latin words cancer ("crab") and forma ("shape, form, appearance").

Females are 5–9 mm (0.20–0.35 in) long and 10–13 mm (0.39–0.51 in) wide. The six abdominal spine-like projections on the abdomen are characteristic. The carapace, legs, and underside are black with white spots under the abdomen. Variations occur in the colour of the upperside of the abdomen - a white or yellow colour with both featuring black spots. A white upper side can have either red or black spines while a yellow upperside can only have black ones. Like with many other spiders, males are much smaller (2 to 3 mm long) and longer than wide. All morphs have six abdominal spines. They are similar to the females in colour, but have a gray abdomen with white spots and the spines are reduced to four or five stubby projections.

This species of spider does not live very long. In fact, the lifespan lasts only until reproduction, which usually takes place in the spring following the winter when they hatched. Females die after producing an egg mass, and males die six days after a complete cycle of sperm induction to the female.

Non Severe late August Nebraska Thunderstorms!

Conditions were just right, almost perfect for capturing some incredible CG Nebraska Lightning. These very slow moving storm cells building just to west northwest of Kearney provided this opportunity that early morning.

July 29, 2012 - Kearney Nebraska US

2012 was a dry summer and the storm season was few & far between. Last recorded rainfall for us was back in early June. Working constantly I had that Sunday evening off and was able to get out to get a few snaps of this oncoming storm.

Finally received some much needed moisture. Strong thunderstorms had formed out in western Nebraska & were dying as they were entering southwest Buffalo county here in South Central Nebraska.

No warnings on this storm but she was producing some exceptional views of the core. Incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes pummeled the earth . This storm cell was proceeding to the northeast from the southwest. It crested right on the northern outskirts of the city. Couldn't have asked for better light & storm. Many photographic gems in this set!

This small falcon is one of our most familiar and widely-distributed birds of prey, absent only from Shetland, parts of north-west Scotland and central Wales.

Kestrels prefer grassland habitats over which they can hunt for small mammals and small birds. A cavity nester, the species will also use suitable nest boxes, a behaviour that has enabled detailed study of their breeding ecology.

While still widely distributed, annual monitoring data have highlighted a decline in Kestrel numbers, the causes of which remain unclear. In some areas predation by Goshawks has been linked to the loss of local breeding pairs.

Phoenicopterus ruber

(American flamingo / Flamenco del Caribe)

The American Flamingo is the only flamingo distributed through the Caribbean Sea, the northern coasts of South America, and on the Galapagos. It was formerly considered conspecific with the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) of the Old World.

Like other flamingos, it feeds in saline and brackish lagoons by straining water through the lamellae on its unique bill and swallowing the invertebrate organisms trapped inside. The American tends to feed somewhat deeper than other flamingos, with the head and often much of the neck submerged.

Hot, Humid and Thunder Approaches. Nice thunderstorm cell just to the north of Broken Bow was sliding south into South Central Nebraska.

Gear packed and ready rumble, I slid north via Hwy 10, which was under construction. I didn't remember this when I left that afternoon and it would eventually push me out to the country roads of Northern Buffalo County Nebraska.

Severe warned and producing 3 inch hail. Severe winds were also a factor. It was a good photogenic storm to capture.

The most widely distributed resident game bird in North America, living now or recently in all of the Canadian Provinces and in 38 of the 49 states on the continent. Their range in the East extends from near the tree-line in Labrador to northern Georgia and northeastern Alabama, and they once occurred as far south as Arkansas in the central part of the continent, although now they occur only in isolated pockets west of the Appalachians and south of the states bordering the Great Lakes. Quite isolated populations live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and the Turtle Mountains in North Dakota. In the mountains of the West, they range south to central Wyoming and central Utah, but apparently never reached most of the mountains of Colorado, northern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. Ruffed Grouse have become established where they were not native in both Newfoundland and Nevada by transplanting wild-trapped birds. On the Pacific Coast, Ruffed Grouse occur on the western slopes of the Cascades and in the coastal ranges south into northwestern California (but not in the high Sierras), and north to the Yukon River valley in Alaska. By far the major portion of the Ruffed Grouse range and population is in regions where snow is an important part of the winter scene and consistently covers the ground from late November to late March, early April or later. The Ruffed Grouse is a hearty, snow-loving, bud-eating native which thrives during severe winters that decimate flocks of partridges, quail, pheasants and turkeys.

Becoming Marni is a site-specific installation conceived as the concluding act of the whole Marni Prisma program. It consists of one hundred wooden sculptures created by Brazilian self-taught artist Véio, distributed around the cloister and inside the rooms of the Abbey, drawing an ideal landscape of organic forms. The sculptures are installed in different groups, indoors and outdoors, their presence marked by a tactile path, the color of Venice’s water, drawn on the floor: an irregular surface with translucent spots, creating continuity between the outside and the inside. A small cabinet in the cloister housed Véio’s workshop, enabling him to create artworks on site. Furthermore, as the San Gregorio Abbey is usually closed to the public, this exhibition presented an opportunity to enjoy a unique space.

Consuelo and Carolina Castiglioni discovered Véio at a collective exhibition in Paris. Through Galeria Estação, which exclusively represents him, they entered in contact with him and Carolina tracked him down to Nossa Senhora da Gloria, the small village in the north East of Brazil where he lives and works. Here Véio creates his enigmatic sculptures by giving new life to pieces of wood, clogs and branches he finds along the river. He immediately identifies a being in each piece – an animal, a resting human, a fantastic bird. By a process of artistic transformation – clipping, shaving, adding a final layer of color – he makes the same beings visible to the public, removing them from the raw material and thereby restoring to the wood a meaning that exceeds pure physicality.

In my garden. La Ceja, Colombia; 2.300 meters above sea level.

Anartia jatrophae is distributed from the southern USA to Bolivia and Argentina. It is also found on most Caribbean islands. When freshly emerged jatrophae has a beautiful mother-of-pearl luminescence that is difficult to reproduce in a photograph, but after only a short while the colours fade to a dull greyish-white.

This is a sun-loving species. It is active mainly in the mornings when it can be seen basking on the ground or on low foliage. Later in the day when temperatures rise it rests in semi-shaded situations at the forest edge, or sits in open sunlight with the wings held erect. In the late afternoon when the temperature begins to dip, the butterflies commonly bask at the top of coarse grasses and herbage.

Listen and enjoy: BIRDHOUSE IN YOUR SOUL - THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS

I'm your only friend

I'm not your only friend

But I'm a little glowing friend

But really I'm not actually your friend

But I am

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch

Who watches over you

Make a little birdhouse in your soul

Not to put too fine a point on it

Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet

Make a little birdhouse in your soul

I have a secret to tell

From my electrical well

It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells

So the room must listen to me

Filibuster vigilantly

My name is blue canary one note* spelled l-i-t-e

My story's infinite

Like the Longines Symphonette it doesn't rest

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch

Who watches over you

Make a little birdhouse in your soul

Not to put too fine a point on it

Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet

Make a little birdhouse in your soul

I'm your only friend

I'm not your only friend

But I'm a little glowing friend

But really I'm not actually your friend

But I am

There's a picture opposite me

Of my primitive ancestry

Which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free

Though I respect that a lot

I'd be fired if that were my job

After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts

Bluebird of friendliness

Like guardian angels its always near

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch

Who watches over you

Make a little birdhouse in your soul

Not to put too fine a point on it

Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet

Make a little birdhouse in your soul

Corvus is a widely distributed genus of medium-sized to large birds in the family Corvidae. The genus includes species commonly known as crows, ravens, rooks and jackdaws; there is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens", and these appellations have been assigned to different species chiefly on the basis of their size, crows generally being smaller than ravens. In Europe, the word "crow" is used to refer to the carrion crow or the hooded crow, while in North America, it is used for the American crow, fish crow, or the northwestern crow.

Ranging in size from the relatively small pigeon-sized jackdaws (Eurasian and Daurian) to the common raven of the Holarctic region and thick-billed raven of the highlands of Ethiopia, the 45 or so members of this genus occur on all temperate continents except South America, and several islands. The crow genus makes up a third of the species in the family Corvidae. The members appear to have evolved in Asia from the corvid stock, which had evolved in Australia. The collective name for a group of crows is a 'flock' or a 'murder'. The genus name is Latin for "raven".

Recent research has found some crow species capable of not only tool use, but also tool construction. Crows are now considered to be among the world's most intelligent animals with an encephalization quotient equal to that of many non-human primates.

In medieval times, crows were thought to live abnormally long lives. They were also thought to be monogamous throughout their long lives. They were thought to predict the future, to predict rain and reveal ambushes. Crows were also thought to lead flocks of storks while they crossed the sea to Asia.
