The ringlet is a widely distributed species found throughout much of the Palearctic realm. In Europe it is common in most countries but absent from northern Scandinavia, peninsular Italy (found in northern Italy), Portugal, southern and central Spain (found in Cantabrian Mountains and the eastern Pyrenees), the Mediterranean islands and North Africa. In Greece it is found in northern regions (Macedonia, Thessaly). Beyond Europe it is found across much of temperate Asia including Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, China and Korea.

The secretary bird is widely distributed in the open country of subsaharan Africa, but nevertheless an endangered species. It is a unique raptor, having been described as an eagle on crane's legs. It stalks its prey terrestrially and its diet is varied. It is noted for its ability to kill and eat venomous snakes, but these are only part of a diet that includes everything from insects to small mammals. From a slide.

Is a widely distributed species of small, partially migratory passerine bird in the Muscicapidae family. It is also called the wall nightingale or red tail. Small passerine bird with dark and discreet plumage, frequently found in human environments, but not exclusively. In its very vast range, stretching from Western Europe to Eastern China, the species has five subspecies which differ enough to be easily distinguished, at least for males.

La Ceja, Colombia; Central Andes; 2.300 meters above sea level.

Hepatic Tanager is the most widely distributed Piranga tanager, ranging from the southwest United States south to northern Argentina. Its English name is based on the liver-red color of the adult male from the northern part of the species' range; however, its scientific name, flava, meaning "yellow," derives from the original description, which is based on a female from Paraguay. These names reflect both a characteristic of the genus Piranga, marked sexual dichromatism, and the broad range of coloration, habitat, and behavior encompassed within the Hepatic Tanager as currently recognized.

Even though the Hepatic Tanager is currently considered one species, much evidence, including a recent study of molecular genetics, indicates that up to 3 species could be recognized, corresponding to the 3 groups of subspecies combined long ago. These groups and their respective species names are the Hepatic Tanager (P. hepatica) of montane pine-oak forests from the southwestern United States to Nicaragua, the Tooth-billed Tanager (P. lutea) of forest edges in foothills and mountains from Costa Rica to northern and western South America, and the Red Tanager (P. flava) of open woodlands of eastern and southeastern South America.

The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is a very large species of sea eagle widely distributed across temperate Eurasia. As are all eagles, it is a member of the family Accipitridae (or accipitrids) which includes other diurnal raptors such as hawks, kites, and harriers. One of up to eleven members in the genus Haliaeetus, which are commonly called sea eagles, it is also referred to as the white-tailed sea-eagle.[2] Sometimes, it is known as the ern or erne (depending on spelling by sources),[3] gray sea eagle[4] and Eurasian sea eagle

Wikipedia: The green bee-eater (Merops orientalis), also known as little green bee-eater, is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family. It is resident but prone to seasonal movements and is found widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal and the Gambia to Ethiopia, the Nile valley, western Arabia and Asia through India to Vietnam. They are mainly insect eaters and they are found in grassland, thin scrub and forest often quite far from water. Several regional plumage variations are known and several subspecies have been named.

ABOUT THIS IMAGE

"Water Play"

Moonstone Beach, Cambria is a great place for shopping, gallery visits, exploration, walking, and for that matter any photography. Wide expanses of sandy beaches and rock outcroppings as well as many species of wildlife. Of course, never forget the restaurants. This day I had just finished a day sitting the Gallery at Marina Square. There was still a bit of light left, so I headed north where I could get some practice with ND Filters. I used several different 3,6 and 10 stop ND Filters experimenting for different effects. I hope you enjoy. Thank you for looking.

New Holland Honeyeater

Phylidonyris novaehollandiae

With long, slender beaks and a tongue which can protrude well beyond the end of their beaks, New Holland Honeyeaters are able to probe for nectar in the deep flowers of Banksias and Grevilleas.

Calls: The voice comprises a loud 'chik', a fainter 'pseet' and some chattering notes. If danger, such as a bird of prey approaches, a group of honeyeaters will join together and give a loud alarm call.

Minimum Size: 18cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Average size: 18cm

Average weight: 20g

Breeding season: any time of year; mainly summer and winter

Clutch Size: 2 to 3

Incubation: 18 days

Nestling Period: 16 days

Description: The New Holland Honeyeater is mostly black and white, with a large yellow wing patch and yellow sides on the tail. It has a small white ear patch, a thin white whisker at the base of the bill and a white eye. This honeyeater is an active bird, and rarely sits still long enough to give an extended view. Sexes are similar in looks, but females are slightly smaller in size. Young birds are browner and have a grey eye.

Similar species: One very similar species is the White-cheeked Honeyeater,Phylidonyris nigra. This species has a single large white cheek patch and a dark eye. The two species frequently occur together.

Distribution: The New Holland Honeyeater's range extends throughout southern Australia, from about Brisbane, Queensland, to just north of Perth, Western Australia.

Habitat: The New Holland Honeyeater is common in heath, forests, woodland and gardens, mainly where grevilleas and banksias are found. It is inquisitive and approaches humans. It also mixes with other types of honeyeaters.

Feeding: New Holland Honeyeaters are active feeders. They mostly eat the nectar of flowers, and busily dart from flower to flower in search of this high-energy food. Other food items include fruit, insects and spiders. Birds may feed alone, but normally gather in quite large groups. Most feeding takes place in lower areas of bushes and thickets.

Breeding: The New Holland Honeyeater's cup-shaped nest is made of bark and grasses, bound together with spider web. It is lined with soft material and is placed in a bush or tree, anywhere from ground level up to 6 m. Both sexes feed the chicks. A pair of adults may raise two or three broods in a year.

The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African bird of the roller family, Coraciidae. It is widely distributed in Southern and Eastern Africa, and is a vagrant to the southern Arabian Peninsula. It prefers open woodland and savanna, and it is for the most part absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, amphibians and small birds moving about on the ground. Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs are laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to a fair height (69 to 144 metres), descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes do not differ in coloration, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults. This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya. Alternative names for the lilac-breasted roller include the fork-tailed roller, lilac-throated roller (also used for a subspecies of purple roller) and Mosilikatze's roller.

The horned grebe or Slavonian grebe (Podiceps auritus) is a relatively small waterbird in the family Podicipedidae. There are two known subspecies: P. a. auritus, which breeds in the Palearctic, and P. a. cornutus, which breeds in North America.[2] The Eurasian subspecies is distributed over most of northern Europe and the Palearctic, breeding from Greenland to western China. The North American subspecies spans most of Canada and some of the United States. The species got its name from large patches of yellowish feathers located behind the eyes, called "horns", that the birds can raise and lower at will.

Distributed in the Western Ghats, these creatures feed on frogs, crabs, mouse deer, black naped hares, rodents, fowl, and reptiles. They usually inhabit in riparian habitats away from human habitation. Clicked at the famous Mudumalai National Park, a tiger reserve at an elevation range of 850-1,250 m in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu which shares boundaries with the states of Karnataka and Kerala.

A widely distributed duck species, it is often considered uncommon in our region. We see it often but always far from camera range to get any shots. This is far less common than the Lesser Whistling Ducks which we are seeing in 100's these days.

The bird is a medium sized duck and has a whistling kind of call. Fulvous describes the color (reddish-yellow). They are often confused with Lesser whistling ducks which are seen throughout the year in our region. However, Fulvous Ducks have white markings on both sides of the tail area, a grey patch around the neck, and the eye ring is grey compared to yellow for the Lesser Whistling ducks. These are thought to be nocturnal ducks and active at nights.

While at the grassland during the weekend, more than 500 birds (these + Lesser + Spot Billed ducks + Swamphens + Ibises) all flew suddenly filling the sky much to my joy. I waded into the ankle deep waterlogged fields and wondered if I caused that - though I was skeptical. After 10 mins, found the answer, a Red Necked Falcon was hunting and it caught a babbler. It must have been nesting in the area and caused these ducks to take flight while doing a pass.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback - very much appreciated.

Outside Zion National Park

Springdale

Utah

USA

Wrong place on map. Does anyone know how to change the location.

Surprisingly I’ve seen only one robin in Florida since I came here from Illinois. This American Robin was photographed near the lodge where I stayed just outside of Zion National Park, Utah. The robin had just finished eating a fresh worm out of the ground.

The American robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the Old World flycatcher family.

The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast.

According to some sources, the American robin ranks behind only the red-winged blackbird (and just ahead of the introduced European starling and the not-always-naturally-occurring house finch) as the most abundant extant land bird in North America. It has seven subspecies, but only T. m. confinis of Baja California Sur is particularly distinctive, with pale gray-brown underparts.

The American robin is active mostly during the day and assembles in large flocks at night. Its diet consists of invertebrates (such as beetle grubs, earthworms, and caterpillars), fruits, and berries.

It is one of the earliest bird species to lay eggs, beginning to breed shortly after returning to its summer range from its winter range. Its nest consists of long coarse grass, twigs, paper, and feathers, and is smeared with mud and often cushioned with grass or other soft materials. It is among the first birds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of several discrete units that are repeated. Wikipedia

Stroud Canal.

Widely distributed on lowland rivers and still-waters, the Kingfisher is a species whose fortunes have waxed and waned. Numbers are impacted by severe winter weather, and this may be the main driver of change, but changing water quality and availability of favoured prey may also play a role. (BTO).

Many species of Thraupis tanagers are widely-distributed, but the Azure-shouldered Tanager occurs only in the Atlantic forest region of southeastern Brazil, from Espírito Santo south to Rio Grande do Sul. Its distribution overlaps that of the Sayaca Tanager (Thraupis sayaca), but the Azure-shouldered Tanager is larger with a heavier bill, has deep blue wing coverts, and a buffy belly. The Azure-shouldered Tanager forages in humid forest, at forest edge, and in adjacent second growth, but in general it is more closely associated with forest than is the Sayaca Tanager. The diet of the Azure-shouldered Tanager includes both fruit and arthropods.

Eristalis tenax, the common drone fly, is a common, migratory, cosmopolitan species of hover fly It is the most widely distributed syrphid species in the world, and is known from all regions except the Antarctic. It has been introduced into North America and is widely established. It can be found in gardens and fields in Europe and Australia. It has also been found in the Himalayas..Eristalis tenax is a large, stocky bee mimic. The eyes are marbled in black. Males have hovering displays. The average wing length is 9.75–13 mm and their average wingspan is 15 mm.

The exact appearance of the drone fly can vary considerably. The abdomen can vary in color from dark brown to orange. Pigmentation has an important role in the control of body temperature; the black areas down the center of the drone-flies abdomen may absorb solar radiation and so warm the dorsal blood vessel, which is right underneath

The village of Caldana is part of the municipality of Gavorrano, province of Grosseto, and is located on the south-eastern plain of Monte Calvo at a height of m. 178 above sea level

The history of Caldana starts from the Middle Ages and documented information already traces its existence as a possession of the diocese of Roselle, which ceded the village to the monks of the nearby abbey of Sestinga; its original name was "Caldana di Ravi" as it is considered as a subsidiary of the nearby village of Ravi also placed in the municipality of Gavorrano. In the following centuries it was owned by the Pannocchieschi family after which it was annexed to the republic of Siena and other families in the area between the end of the sixteenth century and the second half of the seventeenth, including the Suarez, the Bichi and the Chigi. This latter family ceded Caldana to the Lorraines, decreeing their access to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Caldana has very interesting monuments for a village of this size, such as the church of San Biagio, the current parish church, built in the 16th century on a probable 12th century medieval structure; the church is attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Elder even if studies still to be verified attribute the temple to Michelangelo Buonarroti himself for some similarities with his own buildings and finds found in London at the National Gallery.

Caldana is however a pleasant place enclosed within its high medieval walls built in a quadrangular shape and with four imposing corner bastions.

Its village life is made up of 906 inhabitants but it is still a lively place full of initiatives especially in the summer when tourism fills its narrow alleys.

36 Years ago, with a peaked curiosity, I dove feverishly into the world of storm chasing and well, the rest is history. Fast forward a few years and my current journey in storm photography & videography has unlocked a completely new life that I never imagined would exist. Oh how my adventures continue...

Mother Nature definitely orchestrated her magic on this first storm chase of the season. Warm front had positioned itself right over the state of Nebraska. Pulling in all that warm moist air from the south created the perfect conditions for severe thunderstorm development. I was on the hunt & wouldn't be denied this day.

I got to witness 3 very sculptured Supercells that afternoon.... This was Supercell #2!!!

Was just east of Wilcox & the dirt roads hadn't been rained on yet. (I usually don't travel them anymore if they are) to watch this 2nd Supercell develop.

At the time of these captures, we had some incredible rotation.

This side of the storm was tightening, but it would only last briefly before it became rain wrapped and slide back into the cloud bank.

Even though this is the last capture of this set... Part 2 & Part 3 of that day are next... When I have time to post them! Enjoy

The Indian Leopard is widely distributed in the subcontinent. Its coat is spotted and rosetted on a pale yellow to yellowish-brown or golden background and notably the rosettes are larger in other leopard subspecies in Asia. Fur colour tends to be more pale and cream in arid habitats, more gray in colder climates, and of a darker golden hue in rainforest habitats. It is speculated that nearly 15,000 of these beasts live in India. Sadly, even though I live just a two hour drive from wildlife sanctuaries that host these magnificent animals, I have yet to sight them, let alone click them, in the wild.

As an aside, today is the day the Cheetah will be reintroduced in India after being declared extinct in 1952. Eight Cheetahs are scheduled to arrive in India today from Namibia. It is an ambitious and risky plan and India is the only country that has the resources at present to do the impossible, making the country the only one in the world to host all six of the large cats, the Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris), the Asiatic Lion (Panthera Leo Leo), the Indian Leopard (Panthera Pardus Fusca), the Snow Leopard (Panthera Uncia), the Clouded Leopard and the African Cheetah. Sadly the Asiatic Cheetah numbers, presently only found in Iran, are too few to undertake such a risky venture with them.

Update [20-05-2024]: There are now 27 cheetahs in Kuno National Park, including 14 cubs born on Indian soil.
