Wednesday, 1 April 2015: Lokpa (2240 m) to Chumling (2385 m)

Only a half day today, but still an early start. A walk along rhododendron-lined path, dropping down to a tea house by the bridge across the Sardi Khola (a long bridge, a deep gorge and the river a long, long way below = wobbly legs for me!), before zig zagging back up high again, shaded by pine forest, and to the village of Chumling.

A short way from the gompa and chorten - in true Tsum now, totally Tibetan - we set up camp by the stone-built weaving sheds where some of the village ladies were trimming their newly woven aprons. Green fields of barley, and a lovely welcome-with-a-flower from two small children.

As word spread of our arrival, villagers from far and wide arrived to ask for an LED solar light for their home. Leaving Hazel, Anthony and the trek crew to relax for the afternoon, Val, Namgyal and I headed off with a young guy from lower Tsum as our guide to distribute lights to the families in Tharung - a handful of farmhouses set amidst barley fields clinging to the steep mountain slopes of the river valley “just around the corner”. A lot of up and down! A fantastic afternoon - very special welcomes, with invitations to take some Tibetan butter tea and very heartfelt thank yous.

In bed by 8pm - not unusual on trek!

Ilybius fuliginosus (Fabricius, 1792)

Widely distributed and generally common throughout England, Wales and Scotland including, with the exception of the Scillies and Lundy, all our islands north to and including Shetland (NBN Jul 09). The species occurs in a wide range of wetland habitats including streams and rivers, lake margins and ponds, sphagnum and peaty pools and also in brackish water environments, the common requirement being abundant vegetation, but they also occur in temporary environments eg during June 2009 we found many adults, along with Agabus bipustulatus, in flooded tyre ruts in the New Forest and, during the 1980's, we found them regularly in a cattle trough in Ruislip woods, it is therefore worthwhile searching any body of water for the species although, as noted by Balfour-Browne, where there are several apparently suitable ponds etc in close proximity fuliginosus may occur in only one. It is common and sometimes abundant throughout our Watford area and, at least locally, seems to prefer weed-choked stagnant ponds. Numbers vary widely from year to year eg during 2008 we found only a single specimen, in the pond below Cassiobury park, whereas during June and July 2009 they have been abundant throughout. The beetles are good fliers and fly readily, having been recorded widely at light. Winter is passed in the larval as well as the adult stage; adults out of water within nearby soil, under debris or among moss or vegetation, they leave the water in September or October and become active towards the end of April.

Oviposition occurs from June until the autumn. Eggs are inserted within plant tissue, two examples given by Jackson (1960) are within hollow air-filled leaves of Jincus or among air spaces in Alisma leaf stalks. In the absence of suitable plants eggs have been recorded as deposited on Sphagnum or among filamentous algae. Eggs likely to be those of fuliginosus have been found in Jincus bulbosus leaves only 0.9mm wide! Eggs deposited on algae etc rather than within plant tissue go on to develop and hatch but, presumably, are not afforded the protection from parasites or predators gained from being inserted. It is likely that beetles laying eggs early in the summer will have overwintered as adults, those laying later may be from eggs laid the previous autumn; Balfour-Browne notes first stage larvae in August and third stage larave in November and December, and Jackson (1960) notes fresh (soft-bodied) adults during June and July (in Fife). From eggs laid in early August a larvae obtained (in the lab) fed through the autumn and winter into mid-Feb when it buried itself into the soil, a soft bodied female emerged in early May. In the wild this would probably have taken longer and, as these 'fresh' females were recorded as having ovaries 'minute and quite immature', it seems that these will lay late into the summer or autumn. Jackson also stated that some apparently mature, ie with hardened cuticle, females collected from June to August also had immature ovaries. During the summer adults from the two generations will overlap and occur together; overwintered adults ovipositing from early summer and new generation adults ovipositing in late summer and autumn.

Identifying I.fuliginosus

Identifying many of our water beetles from keys or descriptions relies on examination of underside characters and, in many cases in order to be quite confident of the identification, dissection and examination of the genitalia. I.fuliginosus, however, can be confidently identified by its size and general appearance and so the following description is restricted to upperside morphology.

A distinctive species which soon becomes obvious in the field, elongate and with a somewhat parallel sided appearance, large and uniformly dark with a (sometimes faint) dull metallic bronze lustre, sides of pronotum and elytra with strongly contrasting pale borders.

10-11.5mm. Eyes convex and emarginate to front edge. Labrum, clypeus and two spots between posterior margins of eyes rufous; this lighter colouration may be more extensive on the vertex. Antennae and palps testaceous. Entire upper surface with fine microsculpture which is irregular in shape but individual cells are about quadrate, not, overall, elongate or transverse. Pronotum strongly transverse and finely bordered laterally and anteriorly, this border continues a short way along the posterior margin from the perpendicular hind angles. Front angles strongly protruding. With 2 or 3 transverse series of punctures behind front margin (sometimes indistinct). Pale lateral borders are not sharply delimited but merge with the dark ground colour, this pale colouration may extend a short way along the anterior margin. Scutellum broadly triangular, microsculptured and coloured as surrounding elytra. Elytrl suture bordered by a series of fine punctures, upper surface with three longitudinal, albeit rather random, series of punctures. Pale margins broad and not quite reaching apex, in our specimens these are divided posteriorly from about middle by a longitudinal dark mark. Legs rufous or dark rufous. Hind femora with a short series of erect setae on hind edge near apex. Meso and meta tibiae and tarsi with dense long swimming hairs along the upper surface, obvious at X20. Posterior margin of metatarsomeres sinuate and produced into a short lobe below (view from side), ventral surfaces with a fine longitudinal raised bead. Protarsal claws elongate and almost straight, the outer claw slightly shorter and narrower, Mesotarsal claws elongate and weakly curved, about equal in length. Metatarsal claws unequal; outer claw broader and more curved towards apex, about 3/4 length of inner. Male with pale sucker hairs below pro and mesotarsi. Underside predominately dark testaceous.

Description from 6 Watford specimens at X20

Cherry Blossom. Washington, DC. USA. Mar/2016

A cherry blossom is the flower of any of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is called sakura after the Japanese (桜 or 櫻; さくら).

Cherry blossom is speculated to be native to the Himalayas.[4] Currently it is widely distributed, especially in the temperate zone of theNorthern Hemisphere including Europe, West Siberia, India, China, Japan, Korea, Canada, and the United States. The cherry blossom is considered the national flower of Japan.

Japan gave 3,020 cherry blossom trees as a gift to the United States in 1912 to celebrate the nations' then-growing friendship, replacing an earlier gift of 2000 trees which had to be destroyed due to disease in 1910. These trees were planted in Sakura Park in Manhattan and line the shore of the Tidal Basin and the roadway in East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C. The first two original trees were planted by first ladyHelen Taft and Viscountess Chinda on the bank of the Tidal Basin. The gift was renewed with another 3,800 trees in 1965.In Washington, D.C. the cherry blossom trees continue to be a popular tourist attraction (and the subject of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival) when they reach full bloom in early spring

Uncle distributing the Christmas presents to us. This was during me & my family’s annual family Christmas party/get-together in Stockton, CA located at our Auntie Sharon’s house. We had lots of food, fun games, fellowship and simply enjoyed each other’s company during this special time of year. Anyway, hope y’all have a nice Christmas and a happy new year! (Sunday, December 25, 2016)

*Food for thought: Want to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you… And if you want to experience the true meaning of Christmas, give something to someone who can offer nothing in return…

Congressman Blumenauer spoke at the first annual legislative conference of the Distributed Wind Energy Association in DC. Earl spoke to industry leaders about federal incentives and opportunities for small and distributed wind generation. Small wind turbines are manufactured in the US, provide jobs and revenue in rural communities, and can help achieve energy independence and provide consumers with price stability.

Pulp - Common People

She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge

She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College

That's where I

Caught her eye

She told me that her Dad was loaded

I said "In that case, I'll have rum and Coca-Cola"

She said "fine"

And then in thirty seconds time she said

"I wanna live like common people

I wanna do whatever common people do

Wanna sleep with common people

I wanna sleep with common people like you."

Well, what else could I do?

I said "I'll... I'll see what I can do"

I took her to a supermarket

I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere

So it started there

I said, "Pretend you got no money"

And she just laughed and said, "Oh, you're so funny"

I said, "Yeah...

Well, I can't see anyone else smiling in here"

Are you sure"

You wanna live like common people

You wanna see whatever common people see

Wanna sleep with common people

You wanna sleep with common people like me?

But she didn’t understand

And she just smiled and held my hand

Oh, rent a flat above a shop

And cut your hair and get a job

And smoke some fags and play some pool

Pretend you never went to school

But still you'll never get it right

'Cause when you're laid in bed at night

Watching roaches climb the wall

If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah

You'll never live like common people

You'll never do what ever common people do

Never fail like common people

You'll never watch your life slide out of view

And then dance, and drink, and screw

Because there's nothing else to do

Oh!

Sing along with the common people

Sing along and it might just get you through

Laugh along with the common people

Laugh along, even though they're, they're laughing at you

And the stupid things that you do

Because you think that poor is cool

Like a dog lying in a corner

They will bite you and never warn you

Look out, they'll tear your insides out

'Cause everybody hates a tourist

Especially one who, who thinks it's all such a laugh

Yeah, and the chip stains and grease will come out in the bath

You will never understand

How it feels to live your life

With no meaning or control

And with nowhere left to go

You are amazed that they exist

And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why

Rent a flat above a shop

Cut your hair and get a job

And smoke some fags and play some pool

Pretend you never went to school

But still you'll never get it right

'Cause when you're laid in bed at night

If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah

Never fail like common people

Never watch your life slide out of view

And then dance, and drink, and screw

Wanna live with common people like you

Wanna live with common people like you

Wanna live with common people like you

Wanna live with common people like you

Wanna live with common people like you

Wanna live with common people like you

A la la la la la

Ooooh, la la la la

Ooooh, la la la la

Ooooh, la la-la-la-la la, oh yeah

Uncle Ronnie distributes all the Christmas presents and gifts.

The YMCA of Delaware is distributing food at multiple sites – including the Bear-Glasgow YMCA earlier this week – throughout the state. Community members can pick up boxes of pre-packaged non-refrigerated/non-perishable food staples from 9 a.m. to noon (or until supplies are depleted) on these upcoming dates:

Tuesday, May 5 – Sussex YMCA

Tuesday, May 5 – Dover YMCA

Thursday, May 7 – Middletown YMCA

If you or your family in Delaware need support with food or any other social service needs outside of these distributions, please call Delaware 2-1-1, or 7-1-1 for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Delaware 2-1-1 has bilingual operators.

Several YMCA of Delaware locations also are distribution points for the Food Bank of Delaware’s Backback Program for students in need. To learn more about both food distributions:

University of Michigan Robotics Faculty member Peter Gaskell, speaking with a student from Morehouse at day four of the Distributed Teaching Collaborative Summer Session at the Ford Motor Company Robotics Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Thursday, June 29, 2023.

Participants from Berea College, Howard University, Kennesaw State University, and Morehouse College spent the final week of June at the University of Michigan College of Engineering Robotics Department participating in the Distributed Teaching Collaborative Summer Session in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The program, which began with the new Robotics 101 course in Fall 2020 being remotely taught to Morehouse and Spelman College students, enables instructors from different institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), to benefit from open-source resources available for new course development at R1 institutions. This collaboration provides students from HBCUs and MSIs with access to cutting-edge robotics education and helps promote equity in STEM fields.

In March of this year Robotics PhD student Jana Pavlasek and Professor Chad Jenkins were awarded the Claudia Joan Alexander Trailblazer Award for their work developing the new course for undergraduate students, Rob 102: Introduction to AI and Programming. Their commitment to creating opportunity in AI and Robotics continues to extend beyond the University of Michigan. In Fall 2023, Robotics 102 will be offered in this collaborative distributed format to the partner schools. This initiative will help to provide equitable opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow in the field of robotics.

Oryx gazella (common name Gemsbok) is a large antelope distributed in southwestern Africa, whose range has been considerably diminished (a) in the country of South Africa due to human overpopulation, habitat destruction and overhunting; and in (b) southern Angola from destabilizing warfare.

This species is well adapted to the harsh arid and semi-arid environments of the region, with morphological dentition features enabling both grazing and browsing, and remarkable thermo-regulatory physiology that prevents dehydration in these environments. The total population of O. gazella is estimated at approximately 370,000 individuals.

Native distribution includes the majority of Namibia and Botswana, along with vestigial populations in southwest Angola and extreme northwestern South Africa. The range was much more extensive in western South Africa and southern Angola even one century ago. The human population explosion in South Africa, with attendant habitat destruction, overhunting and habitat fragmentation has decimated most of the native population in that country. In Angola, more recent warfare surrounding the Russian financed Cuban mercenaries, with attendant neglect of wildlife conservation in the latter part of the twentieth century has created considerable species decline.

Oryx gazella is a sizable bovid exhibiting a thick, muscular neck, overlain by dense, inelastic skin. O. gazella is, in fact, the most massive species within the genus Oryx. This antelope stands 1.15 to 1.25 meters high at the shoulder, and presents a tail to nose tip body length of 1.80 and 1.95 meters, with males being slightly larger than females. The female body mass ranges from about 178 to 225 kilograms, while the male body mass is from approximately 180 and 240 kilograms.

Gemsboks have the ability to increase their internal body temperature as high as 45 degrees Celsius, as a mechanism to cope with high environmental temperatures and as a means of coping with evaporative water loss in its arid habitats. Tissues in its large nose present a means of cooling this large animal, by exposing a large area of veined tissue to the surrounding air.

Preferred habitat for this antelope is semi-arid and arid desert, bushveldt and grassland, including harsh environments of the Kalahari and Namib Deserts.

O. gazella may be found on stony plains, sand dunes, rocky slopes and alkaline flats. It may travel considerable distances to drink from springs and visit natural salt deposits or salt licks. The typical altitude range of this species is from approximately 800 to 1300 meters above sea level.
