Viola (US play /vaɪˈoʊlə/ and UK /ˈvaɪələ/) is a genus of flowering plants in the violet family Violaceae, with around 400–500 species distributed around the world. Most species are found in the temperate Northern Hemisphere; however, viola species (commonly called violets, pansies or heartsease) are also found in widely divergent areas such as Hawaii, Australasia, and the Andes in South America.

Most Viola species are perennial plants, some are annual plants, and a few are small shrubs. A number of species are grown for their ornamental flowers in borders and rock gardens; the garden pansy in particular is an extensively used spring and autumn/winter bedding and pot plant. Viola and violetta are terms used by gardeners and generally in horticulture for neat, small-flowered hybrid plants intermediate in size between pansies and violets.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_%28plant%29

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

University of Michigan Robotics Faculty member Peter Gaskell, left, speaks with attendees on day four of the Distributed Teaching Collaborative Summer Session at the Ford Motor Company Robotics Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Participants from Berea College, Howard University, Kennesaw State University, and Morehouse College spent the final week of June at the University of Michigan College of Engineering Robotics Department participating in the Distributed Teaching Collaborative Summer Session in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The program, which began with the new Robotics 101 course in Fall 2020 being remotely taught to Morehouse and Spelman College students, enables instructors from different institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), to benefit from open-source resources available for new course development at R1 institutions. This collaboration provides students from HBCUs and MSIs with access to cutting-edge robotics education and helps promote equity in STEM fields.

In March of this year Robotics PhD student Jana Pavlasek and Professor Chad Jenkins were awarded the Claudia Joan Alexander Trailblazer Award for their work developing the new course for undergraduate students, Rob 102: Introduction to AI and Programming. Their commitment to creating opportunity in AI and Robotics continues to extend beyond the University of Michigan. In Fall 2023, Robotics 102 will be offered in this collaborative distributed format to the partner schools. This initiative will help to provide equitable opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow in the field of robotics.

De Andere Markt - Funghilab

in C-mine designcentrum Genk

How can the circular economy be applied

to a local context, starting with available

local skills?

Funghi Lab is an exploratory process of designing, testing and prototyping of a system to produce, distribute and market mushrooms from waste material in Genk. In several cities the potential of growing food based on organic waste material has been explored. Some of these possibilities are now concretely experimented with and tested in Genk. During this experiment existing tools and techniques will be used and brought together in a new system adapted to the context of Genk during a series of labs with local partners.

Funghi Lab was conceived in the design research lab De Andere Markt in Genk that imagines the future of work with citizens. De Andere Markt maps the existing skills of the citizens. As a result of this mapping process different projects to develop workstations have been kick-started. Because of the abundant presence of skills surrounding food (growing vegetables, beekeeping, composting, etc), the lab developed a great interest in designing food-workstations with the community. The project Funghi Lab is thus one of such work-stations.

During MANUFACTUUR 3.0 Ben Hagenaars and Pablo Calderón Salazar will design a system to grow and market mushrooms in three phases and in collaboration with local actors: the collection of fresh coffee grounds that are abundant in the neighbourhood of Winterslag, the marketing and distribution of the mushrooms. The main ambition of Funghi Lab is to support local actors in designing and testing different

processes of producing, distributing and marketing mushrooms based on their skills. At MANUFACTUUR 3.0, all the Funghi Lab experiments will be made open source, which means that the results will be shared within the community to develop them further.

These birds are the most abundant and widely distributed duck species in North America.

Appearance

Large dabbling duck weighing up to 1.3 kg

In breeding plumage, drake (also known as a ‘greenhead’) is easily identified by bright green head, olive yellow bill, brown chest and blue wing patches.

Hen is a mottled brown colour overall, with blue wing patches, orange and black bill and orange feet.

Both have distinctive white underwings with blue speculum markings in their rear edges.

Breeding

One of the first ducks to return to breeding grounds in spring; arrive in breeding pairs as soon as open water is available.

Hen lays one egg a day for a full nest of 8-12 eggs often near the site where she herself hatched.

Hens will re-nest up to four times if a nest is destroyed or abandoned

Hen incubates eggs for an average of 28 days and leads brood to wetland within 24 hours of hatching—stays with brood until they are able to fly at about 8 weeks of age.

Habitat: Lakes, ponds, rivers, potholes, woodland pools and surrounding uplands

Range: Breeds throughout majority of Canada and U.S. (Canadian breeding range expanding in east and north due to natural expansion and introduction by humans). Winters in U.S., northern Mexico and southern Canada (as long as open water and food are available). Most widely distributed dabbler in the world also breeds in Europe and Asia. Most abundant North American duck.

Diet: Wetland vegetation, seeds, mollusks, crustaceans, insects and larvae.

Interesting Facts

With the exception of the muscovy duck, mallards are the predecessors of all domestic ducks; they have been domesticated in Southeast Asia for over 2000 years and in Europe since at least the 12th century

Mallards interbreed with black ducks, northern pintails, gadwall, cinnamon teal and green-winged teal; scientists believe that interbreeding between black ducks and mallards may be a cause for concern for the black duck population

Mallards are highly adaptive to varied environments and human activity. Nesting takes place in urban settings including backyards. Their wide range and abundance is attributed to this adaptability.

With the deadline for my distributed system project coming up on Thursday, the past day has pretty much been coding in every free moment. I'm starting to see how this class could take up a pretty big chunk of time over the upcoming semester. Not too impressed with today's photo -- just something expressing how most of today was spent. Still got a while to go. Hope it all finishes on time o.O

With all of this, I find so much more value in the conversations that I was able to have today. It's when most of the day's work is so incredibly antisocial that I can appreciate the people around me more :-)

A cherry blossom is the flower of any of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is called sakura after the Japanese (桜 or 櫻; さくら).

Cherry blossom is speculated to be native to the Himalayas.[4] Currently it is widely distributed, especially in the temperate zone of theNorthern Hemisphere including Europe, West Siberia, India, China, Japan, Korea, Canada, and the United States. The cherry blossom is considered the national flower of Japan.

Japan gave 3,020 cherry blossom trees as a gift to the United States in 1912 to celebrate the nations' then-growing friendship, replacing an earlier gift of 2000 trees which had to be destroyed due to disease in 1910. These trees were planted in Sakura Park in Manhattan and line the shore of the Tidal Basin and the roadway in East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C. The first two original trees were planted by first ladyHelen Taft and Viscountess Chinda on the bank of the Tidal Basin. The gift was renewed with another 3,800 trees in 1965.In Washington, D.C. the cherry blossom trees continue to be a popular tourist attraction (and the subject of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival) when they reach full bloom in early spring

27 August 2012. Kutum: A woman receives a ration of sorghum (cereal) from the World Food Program (WFP) in Kassab camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). WFP started today distributing food among the IDPs through three different distribution centers.

Several weeks ago, all the IDPs left the camp due to the attacks of militias and they started to come back recently after the attacks stopped, the UNAMID secured the area and the humanitarian organizations started operating.

The series of incidents began on 1 August when the Commissioner of the district of Alwaha, in Kutum town, and his driver were shot dead and his vehicle was carjacked by three unknown armed men. Later in the day, the official’s vehicle was recovered by Government of Sudan security agents 2 kilometres from the Kassab internally displaced persons (IDP) camp.

Subsequently, on the same day armed men surrounded Kassab, looted the market, burnt down the Sudanese Police post in the camp and reportedly killed four persons (three civilians and one police officer) and injured six others.

Similar events leading to the deterioration in the security and humanitarian situation occurred the following days in and around Kutum town, Kassab and Fataborno IDP camps, including fighting between the armed elements and Government Forces, as well as looting and displacement of civilians.

Uncle distributing the Christmas presents to us. This was during me & my family’s annual family Christmas party/get-together in Stockton, CA located at our Auntie Sharon’s house. We had lots of food, fun games, fellowship and simply enjoyed each other’s company during this special time of year. Anyway, hope y’all have a nice Christmas and a happy new year! (Sunday, December 25, 2016)

*Food for thought: Want to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you… And if you want to experience the true meaning of Christmas, give something to someone who can offer nothing in return…
