The ICRC distributes agricultural equipment in the village of Ardébé to people who have been displaced by violence and to the communities who have given them shelter.
In order to boost productivity amongst the farmers of Dar Sila (in eastern Chad), to reduce the time they spend working in the fields and to increase the acreage under crop, the ICRC distributed hoes, sets of weeding tools and donkey harnesses to some 3,700 families in 23 different villages during the months of May and June. Two-thirds of the recipients are former displaced persons who have recently returned home. The others are resident families.

Thinly distributed throughout its breeding range on Madagascar and neighbouring islands of Seychelles, Comoro Islands and Europa Island, the endangered Malagasy pond heron disperses widely during its non-breeding season mostly into central and east African countries. Finding Ardeola idae spending time in South Africa is extremely rare. Discovering it in a location that is accessible to a photographer is an absolute boon!
This bird was stumbled upon sometime in late May by one of the owners in the Mziki shareblock, part of the greater Phinda Game Reserve. It took all of three weeks for the news to filter through to the birding comunity. Although the bird may hang around for a while at this particular dam that is part of the Mkuze River catchment, I made it an urgent priority to unravel the “red tape” that was the main hurdle preventing casual access to the venue. Phinda kindly made available a game drive vehicle to shuttle birders to the Mziki dam, and I reserved the first available game drive slot. Three days after the news broke we clocked in at the Phinda Reserve gate. We were given directions to the Mziki offices where we were met by the Mziki share block manager and a Phinda reserve ranger.
The three hours of our game drive game drive flew by and before we could locate the heron, it was time to go back to the Mziki offices! Share block manager, Johan Kotze took pity on our very sad and frustrated bunch and in his private vehicle took us around the dam once more… and VOILA!!!! …that extra mile did the trick. High-fives and huge grins were telltales of the delight this sighting brought us.
Thanks Johan!
The Malagasy pond heron has a very small population (estimated at 2,000 – 6,000), declining at an alarming rate due to habitat degradation.
Its hunting method is reminiscent of the closely related Squacco heron: a secretive, solitary feeder that sneaks up on its prey. It feeds on small fish, reptiles, amphibians and small invertebrates usually at fresh water pond edges fringed with vegetation, the dam at Mziki being a model example. I cannot think of any reason why the heron would prematurely disappear from this “pond” before its breeding season impulse would call it to migrate north-east. I think this bird is going to stay the full term to September and afford many birders a viewing opportunity…

Participants from Berea College, Howard University, Kennesaw State University, and Morehouse College spent the final week of June at the University of Michigan College of Engineering Robotics Department participating in the Distributed Teaching Collaborative Summer Session in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The program, which began with the new Robotics 101 course in Fall 2020 being remotely taught to Morehouse and Spelman College students, enables instructors from different institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), to benefit from open-source resources available for new course development at R1 institutions. This collaboration provides students from HBCUs and MSIs with access to cutting-edge robotics education and helps promote equity in STEM fields.
In March of this year Robotics PhD student Jana Pavlasek and Professor Chad Jenkins were awarded the Claudia Joan Alexander Trailblazer Award for their work developing the new course for undergraduate students, Rob 102: Introduction to AI and Programming. Their commitment to creating opportunity in AI and Robotics continues to extend beyond the University of Michigan. In Fall 2023, Robotics 102 will be offered in this collaborative distributed format to the partner schools. This initiative will help to provide equitable opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow in the field of robotics.

It was an amazing winter in Delhi. I went for a morning visit to the banks of Yamuna where I was amazed thousands of migrated seagulls and people feeding them. Even who could not come have appointed boat-man and a kid to feed these birds. As a result, the Yamuna which is known for being so polluted turn into an amazing place to witness peace and freedom coexist during this part of the year.
9 May 2012 - The United Nations has distributed humanitarian aid to 175 internally displaced families in the northern province of Balkh who were forced to leave their home due to ongoing drought and insecurity. The families from Tandorak village in the Charkent district are currently living in the Nasaji area of Mazar-e Sharif.
“We left our homes due to insecurity and unemployment and now we do labour work,” said Mohammad Akbar.
“The Taliban started infiltrating our villages and government forces conducted counterinsurgency operations, night raids, planes, bombs made us leave the area,” he added.
Many families in Charkent migrated to the cities abandoning their homes and families when their crops failed due to a lack of rain-fed farming last year. Some have been living in Mazar-e Sharif for nearly five months.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) together with its governmental counterpart – provincial department of repatriation and refuges, distributed yesterday aid donated by UNHCR, World Food Programme (WFP) and International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Each family package included blankets, plastic sheets, cooking supplies, gas cylinders, gas containers, soap, a metal bucket, beans, oil and salt.
“I am the only supporter of a family of seven members and I am thankful to the UN for this assistance,” said Amrullah, adding that he hoped for more aid. “I do labor work for 250 AFN (equivalent to USD 5 ) per day and it’s hard to manage supporting a seven-member family on that amount.”
UNHCR has assisted over 1000 IDP families with humanitarian aid since the beginning of this year in the north and northeastern provinces of Balkh, Jawzjan, Faryab and Kunduz and is planning to assist hundreds more vulnerable IDP families in coming weeks in the same region.

The Postcard
A Frith's Series postcard that was distributed by Thos. Spencer, Market Place, Richmond, Yorkshire. The image is of unusually poor quality for a Frith's publication.
The card was posted in Catterick Camp on Wednesday the 12th. June 1918 to:
Miss D.E.D.T.S. Tutte,
The Strand,
Southampton.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"H. Mess,
R.A. & Tank Corps Command Depot,
Hipsley Camp,
Catterick,
Yorks.
Tuesday.
Dear Dorothy,
Here I am stuck in the wilds
of Yorkshire. Very pretty
countryside but very hilly
and very quiet.
I'd rather be in Bournemouth,
I miss the sea.
Would you like to do me a
favour?
Would you mind getting me
two packets of sweetening
tablets from Boots - they're
the best I've tried and only
tenpence per packet.
There are no shops near
here, and we get no sugar
in our early morning cup of
tea nor in our coffee after
dinner and lunch. Nor in
tea in local cafes.
I'll send the cash on in my
next letter when I can get
to a P.O.
Love to all in the Saintly
South from one in the
Naughty North named Alf".
Advances Along the Matz River
So what else happened on the day that Alf posted the card?
Well, on the 12th. June 1918, during the Spring Offensive, heavy casualties from French counterattacks forced the Germans to call off further advances along the Matz River in France.
The Allies sustained 35,000 casualties and the Germans had 30,000 casualties.
An Assassination
Also on that day, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia was assassinated, the first of the Romanov family to be murdered by the Bolsheviks.
Captain Roy Phillipps
The 12th. June 1918 was also the day on which Captain Roy Phillipps of the Australian Flying Corps scored his 11th victory by shooting down four German fighters – three Fokker triplanes, an LVG, and a Fokker D.V11 fighter plane – in a single patrol over Ribécourt-la-Tour, France.
German flying ace Fritz Loerzer, commanding officer of the Jagdstaffel 26, was the pilot of the Fokker D.V11 when it crashed, allowing him to be captured. Phillipps received the Distinguished Flying Cross for the patrol.

Flyer distributed around the electorate of Bruce in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs. The seat has been fairly safe for Labor since a redistribution in 1996 saw it included parts of Dandenong that were previously in the electorate of Holt. Prior to that it was a Liberal electorate centred around Glen Waverley. The Labor member since 1996 has been Alan Griffin who is retiring at the 2016 election. Notably the early days saw a staffer in the office named Daniel Andrews who would win the 2014 Victorian Election to become Premier.
The 2013 Election saw Labor retain the seat with a wafer thin margin of 1.8%. The Liberal Party put resources into the electorate following a brief surge in polling to Malcolm Turnbull following the leadership spill in September 2015. Polling before the July 2 election date has the two major parties close with the incumbent Coalition possibly 'sandbagging' enough marginal seats to hold on to power.
More recently Labor were hoping for gains in Victoria which may have been hampered by issues with the Andrews Victorian Government.
Note the re-branding of the Liberal Party to the 'Turnbull Liberal Team' following the leadership spill in September 2015 replacing Tony Abbott with Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister.
Thank you to Vax80 for the flyers.
Lilac-Breasted Roller
The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African member of the roller (or Coraciidae) family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, and is a vagrant to the southern Arabian Peninsula. It prefers open woodland and savanna, and it is for the most part absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about on the ground. Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to a fair height (10 to 12 metres), descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are alike in coloration, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults. This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya. Alternate names for the lilac-breasted roller include the fork-tailed roller, lilac-throated roller (also used for a subspecies of purple roller) and Mosilikatze's roller
