What better image to encapsulate the grandeur and diversity of The Golden State than a desert Joshua Tree in Death Valley National Park with the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada bordering Sequoia National Park looming in the background? This might be one of my favorite photographs that I've ever had the pleasure of capturing. I knew that Joshua Trees grew in Death Valley but I knew that they were rare. I knew that the part of the park where they grew was remote and had the Sierra Nevada Mountains looming over them. I hoped to get some sort of image combining the two. As we drove out of the park with a glowing and glowing sunset above us, I caught this glimpse of perfection, jumped out of the car, and got exactly what I was hoping for.

The springs at Stamping Ground, Kentucky, attracted herds of buffalo that stamped their feet in the cool muddy water. In 1869 two woolen mills were built at the site...one later converted into a distillery. The Buffalo Springs Distilling Company began operating in 1934 and later sold out to Schenely Distilleries. Schenely closed this distillery in 1968 and the buildings remained vacant until severely damaged by a 1974 tornado. The city of Stamping Grounds bought the site and demolished it in 2007. The site is now Buffalo Springs Park.

Willett Distilling Company, also known as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD), Ltd., is a private family-owned and -operated company that produces various brands of bourbon and rye whiskey. Most brands produced by the company are in the premium category and range from 6 to 17 years of aging maturity, with some of its bottlings being aged as long as 23 years.
The company is located on the outskirts of Bardstown, Kentucky on a site that began as a farm owned by the family. Primarily operating as a relatively large independent bottling company, KBD has been called "the big daddy of bourbon and rye bottling".[3] The company has remained under family ownership and operation at the same location since it was created in 1935 as the Willett Distilling Company.

More skeletons in the sand. The iron steamboat S.S Dicky ran aground in 1893. They tried to refloat it, but heavy seas hampered their efforts. Apparently the beached Dicky was a popular place for dances back in the day, before it finally succumbed to an accidental fire.
This is all that remains of the S.S. Dicky!
Came upon this forlorn tribute on a grave yesterday. A tiny Matchbox sized car, I nearly missed it. Just a quick glimpse of red paint caught my eye and drew me in. The little car had obviously been here for years. Heavily weathered but as impactful as anything I encountered on this dreary afternoon. I'm sure it was bright, shiny red when first placed here. But that was many years ago. The paint has chipped and faded; the windshield yellowed; the flame accents on the doors barely visible. And now strewn with dried grass flung up by an errant weed whip. About as forlorn as it gets, yet steeped in sentiment. Probably a wife's tribute to a dead husband who loved old cars. I see things like this all the time; the objects vary from fishing poles to farm tractors. It usually boils down to whatever singular object best distills that person's life. But what do you place on a grave when the person's interests were more intangible? Or related to thoughts more than objects? Difficult to quantify impressions like that. Or maybe it just seems too simplistic. I'm sure this guy was multi-dimensional, like all of us. But for now anyway his visual legacy is this miniature red hotrod, withering away in a rural cemetery.

Excerpt from www.monstermonth.ca/about/:
For over two decades, Tim Murton’s Twilight Zoo has been decorating the streets of Elora with a unique collection of lantern sculptures.
During the month of October, visitors started coming to Elora from all over Southern Ontario to see the display.
In 2007, Julie Denneny and a crew of community volunteers brought the Monster March, a non-motorized parade that encourages families (including pets!) to dress up in their favourite costumes and participate, and it has been a main event during Monster Month ever since.
As popularity grew, local artists, community groups, businesses, and other organizations started adding themed events, leading to the name “Monster Month in Elora.”
In 2017, Sensational Elora, with the support of some generous sponsors, purchased the collection of the monsters, known as The Twilight Zoo, subsequently organizing storage, repair, lighting, and installation of the 100+ wire sculptures. They also accepted responsibility for the Monster March parade. Next, they organized a Monster Month Committee, with representation from all participating organizations, created a website featuring all events and started marketing a coordinated “Monster Month in Elora.” event.
Spooky-themed events and haunted offerings throughout Centre Wellington include a Self-Guided Tour, Spirit and Ghost Walks, Spooky Stables, Lantern Tours, Magicians, “Monster March”, a haunted house, guided tours and theme movies. The list of events continues to grow each year, with over 50 events from more than 20 community partners in 2024.

The former Large Distilling Co. in the neighborhood of Large in the borough of Jefferson Hills. This distillery was sold to Overholt Distillery around 1930. In June 1933, National Distillers Products Corporation then bought this and the Overholt distillery in Broad Ford.
This later became the site of the Westinghouse Astrolnuclear Laboratory - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westinghouse_Astronuclear_Laboratory and is currently home to Clark Testing.
In this image, I think at least three of these buildings are original (albeit modified) to the distillery. I can't find any Sanborn maps of this area, but there is this old advertisement with a drawing of the property: tile.loc.gov/storage-services/service/ndnp/dlc/batch_dlc_...
The 4 story brick building on the left has new windows but brickwork features appear to be the same. There are similar brick details in the building on the right, which has had a second story added at some point. The middle building in front of the smokestack was likely a boiler house.

This is a different take from me. Taking one image then blending with another image and using it as a texture and then adding other images as objects and blending them in to give a collage that brings some of the features and feelings of the day and distills them into one image. The sign on the bottom left is a typical sign on the bridleway, the rocks on the right are the gritty pinnacles seen on Harborough Rocks. The curve seen as silhouette is the railway cutting seen near Hartington, I imported the sheep in from the same day too and even the sunset was from a different picture on the same day.
Haslingden Grane is a glaciated valley lying to the west of Haslingden and in the north east of the West Pennine Moors. It is easily accessible via the B6232 Grane Road which links to the M65 motorway and the A56. It contains three reservoirs: (west to east) Calf Hey Reservoir, Ogden Reservoir and Holden Wood Reservoir.
Prior to the construction of the reservoirs in the 19th century the settlement of Haslingden Grane had a population of 1,300 and was the centre of an illegal whisky distilling industry. The remains of some buildings can still be seen. Much quarrying has taken place in the past and continues at Jamestone Quarry.
The valley is overlooked to the north by Oswaldtwistle Moor and to the south by Musbury Heights. The attractive moorland scenery makes it a popular place for walking especially through the well known Fairy Glen beauty spot, there is an information centre, parking and cafe at Clough Head.
