Town gas used to be made by distilling coal. Here we see the banks of tubular retorts containing the coal. They had to be filled and then raked out by hand. They are heated, behind the brick wall, to red-heat by the surrounding hot flue gases of a furnace hand-stoked at the floor below. Gases emitted from the heated coal travel upwards in the black pipes to a header vessel. From there they are purified and finally distributed around the town for lighting and heating.

The coal distillation and purification yielded as eventual by-products, ammonia, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, tar, phenols, soaps, dyestuffs, early plastics and a host of other valuable chemicals. The retort residue is coke used in iron smelting.

Coal gas is now replaced by ‘natural’ gas - methane. We now rely on that and oil for chemicals and plastics.

This town gasworks functioned from 1846 to 1965. It is the only surviving one in England and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Cultures of ethnic minorities in southern China, northern Southeast Asia and Himalayan foothills are noted for their similarities to the Japanese culture not only limited to the above but also to the food cultures including Sushi and fermented foods, silk, lacquerware etc.

The beautiful label art on this distilled, non-alcoholic spirits bottle inspired me to create this photo. This is the last image in my drinks series. :) I hope you like it!

So, to beat the January blues, I had two New Year’s resolutions this year:

1. yoga every day for the month of January

2. take part in the Dry January challenge

Canada’s latest alcohol consumption guidelines recommend two or less standard drinks per week. Because alcoholic beverages don’t come with a warning, a lot of people aren’t aware that even moderate alcohol consumption can cause various health problems including cancer.

Now that we’re into February, I’m technically “allowed” to have a proper drink, but now I’m not sure that I want to. Maybe I will wait for a special occasion… I hope to continue with daily home yoga as well. We’ll see how that goes. ;)

Cheers, Flickr Friends, and Happy February! I sincerely hope that you are all doing well. Stay healthy, and (if it makes you happy) keep taking photos! 📷✨

At the Western edge of Connecticut in a fairly rural area this is a great place to do a trail at the end of the warm season. It was a trip for the family on this day and I was fortunate to not have a blazing sun so that this shot could have some softness to it to work with.

For over two centuries, whiskey has been distilled on the banks of the Kentucky River near Frankfort, Kentucky.

Though the distillery has changed owners and names several times over the past two hundred years, it has become one of the most recognized and highly regarded in the world. In fact, just a week ago, Buffalo Trace, the current owner of this National Historic Landmark property, won two of the top three Whisky Bible Awards, including World Whisky of the Year, for William Larue Weller, part of the distillery's 2017 Antique Collection.

One of the unique aspects of the current Buffalo Trace Distillery, is that it claims to be the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States, and was one of the handful of distilleries (then named the George T Stagg Distillery), along with Brown-Forman (which now produces Woodford Reserve), Frankfort Distilleries (now Four Roses), and American Medicinal Spirits (Old Grand-dad, a Jim Beam product) to be permitted by the federal government to bottle medicinal whiskey and produce new whiskey during prohibition.

In addition to the Buffalo Trace brand, other whiskeys currently distilled and warehoused here include: Eagle Rare, Antique Collection, Experimental Collection, Single Oak Project, E.H. Taylor Collection, Van Winkle, Stagg Jr., Blanton's Single Barrel, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel, Sazerac Rye, W. L. Weller, Old Charter, Benchmark, Ancient Age, White Dog Whiskey, and Bourbon Cream.

A great and informative stop on the Bourbon Trail, and a phenomenal family of whiskeys, make this one of my top recommendations for tourist activities in the state of Kentucky.

Enjoy the holiday season but don't drink and drive. I like my Flickr friends.

There are pictures that can evoke emotions of viewers. There are pictures that can distill emotions. I guess abstracts belong to the second category.

What better image to encapsulate the grandeur and diversity of The Golden State than a desert Joshua Tree in Death Valley National Park with the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada bordering Sequoia National Park looming in the background? This might be one of my favorite photographs that I've ever had the pleasure of capturing. I knew that Joshua Trees grew in Death Valley but I knew that they were rare. I knew that the part of the park where they grew was remote and had the Sierra Nevada Mountains looming over them. I hoped to get some sort of image combining the two. As we drove out of the park with a glowing and glowing sunset above us, I caught this glimpse of perfection, jumped out of the car, and got exactly what I was hoping for.

The springs at Stamping Ground, Kentucky, attracted herds of buffalo that stamped their feet in the cool muddy water. In 1869 two woolen mills were built at the site...one later converted into a distillery. The Buffalo Springs Distilling Company began operating in 1934 and later sold out to Schenely Distilleries. Schenely closed this distillery in 1968 and the buildings remained vacant until severely damaged by a 1974 tornado. The city of Stamping Grounds bought the site and demolished it in 2007. The site is now Buffalo Springs Park.
