SMART CITIES: DIGITAL SOLUTIONS FOR A LIVABLE FUTURE
Pre-Forum Lunch Discussion
Digital disruption is coming to the places two-thirds of the world’s population will call home by 2030: cities. The drive to make cities smarter and deliver more value for residents is transforming municipal infrastructure and services worldwide. For companies, and not just tech firms, this represents a major business opportunity. Technology is reconfiguring traditional roles and divisions of labor. City governments may have to regulate but they don’t have to provide every type of service themselves. In fact, they can’t — and as a result, smart cities have become more intricate ecosystems, with the degree and mix of private-sector participation varying from city to city. Companies will need to adapt their products as cities become more digitally connected. Drawing on new McKinsey Global Institute research that sizes the potential impact of smart city technologies across a range of quality-of-life indicators, we’ll explore how city governments and companies together can maximize the potential navigate the challenges of urban digitization.
