33033 and 33052 at Coalville open day on 1st Sept 1985. They had worked a special in for the open day, I can't remember where from , any ideas anyone? Seems to be an involved discussion going on trackside.
The city is deep into the discussion and debate on how to reorganize and adjust to life with half the population from its peak years. One concept getting much attention is the idea of turning over large tracks of the city to farming in one form or another. Some ideas presented call for commercial farms; others focus on small community farms. What I find most interesting is the undercurrent of resistance to this idea. The thread of discussion of those opposed to the idea of farms weaves in notions of land grabs and sinister rich guys from the suburbs looking to steal the city from under its citizens. Some of this is tied to the same old racial issues and class distrust held deep in the heart of a working man’s town. These feelings have choked the city for so many years yet I think something else is at play.
Many people in the city and the state still hold onto the hope that the auto industry will turn around and all will be well again. Turning the landscape of the city back 100 years means we have given up that hope. It means, to this way of thinking, we have failed. The trouble with this line of reasoning is does not acknowledge the reality that we have failed, or if it eases the pain, we have been failed by seriously flawed and short- sighted leadership. None of this matters when charting the new course for the city. Putting an ambitious urban farming program into the mix of re- inventing the city deals with this strange economic duality we are faced with, our greatest asset is our abundant available land and our greatest anchor is all of this vacant land weighing us down with this visual nightmare of abandonment.
The latest census makes clear the trend of growth and migration continues to be south and west. The cities along the Great Lakes have seen their day of growth during the industrial gold rush of the 20th century. We are unlikely to see those days again. Farming stands as an opportunity to put the land to its highest and best use and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to build on the buy local trend and retail distribution. If this idea takes hold I think the city will be a remarkably changed place in my life time. Change is good.
On my way home from work off night shift.. So nice to have empty roads and the peace to take pictures without being disturbed or run down!!

The work incorporates light and plant forms, and creates spaces within itself for reflection and play. This significant legacy piece will remain as a permanent, re-locatable work in Christchurch City.
