On 14th October 1881 a major storm hit this part of the coastline. The Eyemouth Disaster, as it came to be known, was a major disaster resulting in the death of 189 fishermen who were out in their boats.

It was a catastrophe, decimating communities. Eyemouth was especially hit but in the village of Cove where I stood, 11 of the 21 fishermen who lived there died.

In recent years a number of memorials have been erected in the various fishing villages affected. They're rather heartbreaking to look at, depicting the worried women and children of the village looking out to see wondering if their husband, their dad would make it home.

Final day of the Southern Upland Way blogged about at ramblingman.org.uk/southernuplandway/day18

I have seen some increasing issues with this Emerald Ash Borer. This year it has really begun doing in trees. In Northbrook I saw one block lose at least 10 35+ year olds but this area I was at in Arlington Heights will be devasted.

The cost and loss of property value will be in the millions! Almost every home I saw had a tag and my wild guess is at least a few hundred trees gone soon.

I lost two Elms that were 55 years old to Dutch Elm and it sucks. It really sucks when you are paying about $2400.00 to devalue your property yet!

Even from 36,000 feet the flame and smoke plume from the blown-out well head stand out against the gulf of mexico. Brown streaks of crude oil were evident for miles in every direction. Just makes you sick to your stomach.

I tried an experiment. I had to go to the store so I left all three dogs in the house.

This is what I came home to see. The crate is supposed to be next to the couch. The table with all my family photos and semi precious books was behind the couch.

Rosie and Blaze have been left alone for 6 hours at a time and no problrm. So this was the result of Marcus.

But I love them any way.

Believe it or not there was not a collision here. My dog, Jasper (flying) narrowly missed the oblivious Maverick (the black and white border collie) while playing Frisbee at the Chandler, AZ Paseo Dog park.

About 40 students participated in Missouri Hope 2013, an intensive three-day domestic disaster relief field training exercise, Oct. 4-6, 2013, at Northwest's Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area. The training, which was offered to all students, centered on the aftermath of an EF4 tornado and challenged students to respond to a variety of emergeny situations within the scenerio. A number of local emergency organizations also contributed resources and expertise to the training. (Photo by Darren Whitley/Northwest Missouri State University)

The abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal India, site of the worst ever single-incident industrial disaster. A leak of highly toxic gas, from this factory, killed between 8-10,000 people within 72 hours. Up to 25,000 people are now believed to have succumbed to illness or injury caused by their exposure to this gas.

The factory has never been decontaminated nor remediated and these photos show its condition in the year leading up to the 35th anniversary of the disaster. Toxic waste, dumped at the factory site and the nearby solar evaporation ponds, continues to poison the land and ground water for miles around. The groundwater has been a primary drinking water source for tens of thousands of families, many of whom still rely on it.
