Some stories really hit home.

For almost 2 weeks, we've watched the news of the mining tragedy in Utah. It's really been nagging at me. The above photo is of my Great Great Uncle, John Flood. He was killed in the Cherry Mining Disaster of 1909. On his third trip into a burning mine to rescue miners, he was killed. He received the Carnegie Medal for his bravery.

I've posted this photo before, but felt, in light of the recent tragedy, it was worth posting again.

It's just a little spooky to me.

Following that mining disaster, my father's ancestors moved to Chicago. 2 generations later, my Dad and several of his relatives found work as asbestos workers. That profession has claimed the lives of several of my relatives, including both of my parents.

At some point in time, we are going to have to find a better way of protecting our workers and average citizens.

Frankly, I'm sick of paying benefits to former members of Congress or the Senate who are in jail, while people face life threatening dangers on the job every day and are seriously underpaid.

Ok....I feel better having said all of this! Thanks for reading.

I send my prayers to those who are suffering in Utah.

Dawson is a ghost town in Colfax County, New Mexico. It was a mining town, and suffered two mine disasters killing 376.

The first on October 22, 1913, was an explosion that killed 263 miners. The second, also an explosion, on February 13, 1923, killed 123 miners - many of them children of the men who died in the 1913 explosion.

Its cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery is filled with iron crosses marking the graves of miners, many who died in the two explosions.

Disasters have long been a topic of interest. Disaster managment in particular has been an area of my studies (Turkey 1999, Bosnia 1996, Berlin 1989). Apart from the (very badly and wrongly sketched) immediate housing needs for the population in a disaster zone, creatively and strategically responded to with ships, the planning for disaster is an important aspect: Only when you plan beforehand, by stealth, can you influence what happens after the event.

I had already gone to bed and was drifting off to sleep when I realized I hadn't taken any photos for the day. Oh no! And I was doing so well this year. Fortunately, it was not yet midnight, so I got up and snapped a few shots.

My colleague Judith Kolberg wrote this very sensible book about planning for disasters. It was a relief to read it after perusing Cody Lundin's severe scenarios of starvation and all hell breaking loose, leading to general mayhem and deteriorations of systems.

The much more likely disasters of storms, earthquakes, floods and even terrorist attacks and industrial chemical spills are the parameters that outline Judith's perspective on disaster planning. It has been recommended on Amazon, by a self-described expert, as a different take on disaster since it takes into account the aftermath when you will want to put your life back together via your insurance policy, possible state funds and the logistics of rebuilding.

It was also reassuring in that I've got a good start on much of what Judith recommends in the way of document organization and preparing the home as well as viable means of communication during a disaster. She interviewed lots of people who have gone through these commonplace disasters so gives a feel for what most stresses people out. She also includes government information, what their role is in a disaster and what you'll need to expect from those departments once you go to them for help.

Her organizing tips on how to assemble important papers, access codes and vital contacts are very calming and she includes forms in the appendix. She also covers packing a bug out bag (called a grap and go bag here), useful first aid to know and provisions for sheltering in place. Plus lists on what family members need to know to do during an actual disaster and step by step instructions to take in case of evacuation. Laid out in clear bite size sections; it is a quick read with little extraneous philosophical material. So not an armchair read, but a motivator.

the Smith Mine disaster was the worst coal mining disaster in the State of Montana, and the 43rd worst in the United States, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Memorial of the Smith Mine disaster .On February 27, 1943, at approximately 9:37 a.m., an explosion ripped through Smith Mine #3, a coal mine located between the towns of Bearcreek and Washoe. Since it was a Saturday, there was a short crew in the mine. Of the 77 men working that day, only 3 got out of the mine alive, and one of the rescue workers died soon afterwards. The report from the United States Bureau of Mines states that 30 of the men were killed instantly by the explosion, and the remainder died either through injuries sustained in the explosion, or through suffocation from the carbon monoxide and methane gas in the mine. The explosion was deep underground, and wasn't even heard from the mouth of the mine, despite having enough power to knock a 20-ton locomotive off its tracks 1/4 mile from the blast origin.

All of the bodies were removed from the mine. There is a highway plaque near the mouth of the mine, which was never reopened, and there are memorials in the cemeteries in Bearcreek and nearby Red Lodge, the county seat for Carbon County.

The explosion was attributed to a buildup of methane gas in the mine. The cause of detonation is unknown, but various reports note than men were allowed to smoke in the mine, and that fuses for blasting were lit with matches.

The mine is located at coordinates 45°09′36″N 109°11′32″W / 45.16°N 109.19222°W / 45.16; -109.19222.
