I have been trying to photograph this female Siskin for the last month hoping that I could read the number on her ring. This is the best I have and reads, top row NH... middle LO... bottom L4... Now I just need to get shots of the other side of the ring.
I posted this in a thread on Winterwatch and Child of herne posted the following comment:
"Lovely photo of the Siskin. The NH and LO will refer to the contact details of Natural History Museum, London which is found on all BTO rings used in Britain. Although rings are issued by the BTO the Museum adress is used as it is better known internationally leading to better reply rates from rings recovered abroad. Unforunately I doubt that it would be possible to determine the ringing location from two digits other than it having been ringed in Britain"

How low can you go?
What if your sole purpose in life were to serve as an example to others…for what NOT to do? This seems to be the karma for poor 800 S. Wells, also known as River City. The building looks like a cross between a space ship outside and a submarine inside. The concrete walls can be depressing and the roof over the lobby has been known to leak. A slew of River City properties are currently short sales or in foreclosure.
Comprised of 448 units sitting on 20 acres of land southwest of Printer’s Row, there are studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Currently the lowest-priced available studio is a recently listed short sale offered at $89,000; the lowest-priced one-bedroom is a foreclosure property offered $79,000 which is down from the original asking price of $150,000. The lowest-priced available two-bedroom unit is priced at $116,400. It was originally offered at $128,900. This unit is…wait for it, here it comes…in foreclosure. Ditto the lowest-priced three-bedroom which is now offered at $125,500 after sitting on the market for a total of 348 days.
There must be more than one gobsmacked River City homeowner asking himself, “What happened?”
The answer is: a perfect storm of a developer who over-promised and an economy that was bucking for a giant reset.
When River City converted to condos in 2001, American Invsco offered buyers two years of free assessments and taxes plus a guaranteed renter for two years. Back then banks were happy to underwrite pie-in-the-sky loans to applicants whose eyes were bigger than their checkbooks. So why not jump in?!
We know how that story played out.
But they say there’s a lid for every pot. River City makes sense for buyers with specific goals. Some enjoy the unique architecture. Some like being in close proximity to the Chicago River (great for sailing and kayaking). Some cannot resist the unbelievable condo deals to be had – invest now, keep the property for a few years, and watch the equity build.

One Direction’s Zayn may be sliced off a giant sand sculpture, after he sensationally quit the boy band.
The larger than life carving of all five lads has been made by artist Lee Tetzner.
“It took around a fortnight to complete,” said Lee, 50, at SandWorld in Weymouth, Dorset.
“I’ve been sculpting professionally since 1989, but this was a huge challenge,

“It’s such a shame Zayn has left the band. My sculpture was out of date before anyone had seen it!”
SandWorld’s director Mark Anderson said he may take a saw to the work and cut Zayn off.
“Zayn’s torso forms the far right section of the sculpture, so it wouldn’t be difficult to loose him,” he said.
“We like our work to be up to date, which is why our sculpture of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge includes their new baby.
“But some 1D fans might think slicing Zane off is going too far.
Lee Tetzner’s work isn’t confined to sand. He built many of the figures in various Aardman Animation hits such as ‘Shaun the Sheep’ and the ‘Wallace and Gromit’ series.

Cicadas, alternatively spelled as Cicala or Cicale, are insects in the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha (which was formerly included in the now invalid suborder Homoptera).
Cicadas are in the superfamily Cicadoidea. Their eyes are prominent, though not especially large, and set wide apart on the anterior lateral corners of the frons. The wings are well-developed, with conspicuous veins; in some species the wing membranes are wholly transparent, whereas in many others the proximal parts of the wings are clouded or opaque and some have no significantly clear areas on their wings at all. About 2,500 species of cicada have been described, and many remain to be described.
Cicadas live in temperate-to-tropical climates where they are among the most-widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and unique sound. Cicadas are often colloquially called locusts, although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are various species of swarming grasshopper. Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs.
The male cicada has loud noisemakers called "tymbals" on the sides of the abdominal base. Its "singing" is not the stridulation (where one structure is rubbed against another) that characterizes many other familiar sound-producing insects, such as crickets. Rather, the tymbals are regions of the exoskeleton that form a complex membrane with thin, membranous portions and thickened ribs; contracting the internal tymbal muscles produces a clicking sound as the tymbals buckle inwards, and the relaxing of the muscles causes the tymbals to return to their original position, producing another click. The interior of the male abdomen is mostly hollow, which amplifies the sound. A cicada rapidly vibrates these membranes, and enlarged chambers derived from the tracheae make its body serve as a resonance chamber, further amplifying the sound. The cicada modulates the sound by positioning its abdomen toward or away from the substrate. Additionally, each species has its own distinctive song.
Average temperature of the natural habitat for the South American species Fidicina rana is approximately 29 °C (84 °F). During sound production, the temperature of the tymbal muscles was found to be significantly higher.
Cicadas sing most actively in hot weather and do their most spirited singing during the hotter hours of a summer day, in a roughly 24 hour cycle.
Although only males produce the cicadas' distinctive sound, both sexes have tympana, which are membranous structures used to detect sounds. They are thus the cicadas' equivalent of ears. Males can disable their own tympana while calling.
Some cicadas produce sounds up to 120 dB (SPL), among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds. This is notable because the song is loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss in humans should the cicada sing just outside the listener's ear. Conversely, some small species have songs so high in pitch that the noise is inaudible to humans. Species have different mating songs, ensuring that the appropriate mate is attracted. It can be difficult to determine from which direction(s) a cicada song is coming because the low pitch carries well.
In addition to the mating song, many species also have a distinct distress call, usually a broken and erratic sound that the insect emits when seized. A number of species also have a courtship song, which is often a quieter call and is produced after a female has been drawn by the calling song.

One Direction’s debut album “Up All Night” was released less than six months ago, but the U.K. vocal group is already moving on to its second full-length. The album artwork for the group’s “Take Me Home” was released Thursday (Aug. 30) and features the five well-dressed singers climbing on top of — or, in Niall Horan’s case, trapped inside — a bright red telephone booth.
The boy band’s sophomore disc is slated for release on Nov. 13 through Syco/Sony Music. Although officially announced Thursday, Louis Tomlinson revealed the album name Wednesday on Twitter. “So pleased to tell you that our new album is called ‘take me home’ can’t wait for you to hear it! More news soooon! #takemehome.”
Last week the band announced that a new single, titled “Live While We’re Young,” would arrive on Oct. 1. Preorder for the album will be available Sept. 3.

The original motion picture cast recording of "Les Miserables" climbed 5-1 on the new U.K. album chart yesterday (Sunday), as "Scream & Shout" by will.i.am featuring Britney Spears held off new entries by 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake to start a second week atop the singles survey.
The "Les Miserables" album rose to the peak after opening its account at No. 5 last week. It now boasts a top 40 single, Anne Hathaway's version of "I Dreamed A Dream" making its top 75 debut at No. 22. Also from the cast album, Samantha Barks' "On My Own" entered the 75 at No. 43.
Emeli Sandé's "Our Version Of Events" slipped from the album summit to No. 2, with Jake Bugg's self-titled Mercury/Universal set steady at No. 3. "Arc," the sophomore release by English alternative rock band Everything Everything, immediately outdid the No. 17 peak of its 2010 predecessor "Man Alive" with a No. 5 debut.
Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky arrived at No. 7 with "Long Live A$AP" and Paloma Faith's "Fall To Grace" climbed back into the top ten, 11-9. The other new title in the top 20 was "(Awayland)", the second release by Irish band Villagers, marking a big step up from the No. 66 U.K. peak of 2010's "Becoming A Jackal." "Now! That's What I Call Music 83" racked up a ninth week at No. 1 on the compilation chart.
The will.i.am/Britney Spears single rallied in the second half of the chart week after earlier Official Chart Company sales flashes had suggested 50 Cent was heading for his first U.K. No. 1 single with "My Life," featuring Eminem and Adam Levine. That entered at No. 2 with Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," featuring Jay-Z, opening at No. 3. The only climber in the top ten was One Direction's "Kiss You," up 12-9. with Sandé's "Clown" rising 23-11 and Adele's "Skyfall" theme edging back into the top 20, 21-18.
British hitmaker Olly Murs not only secured a second week atop the U.K. singles chart yesterday (Sunday) with "Troublemaker," featuring Flo Rida, but entered the album chart at No. 1 with his third set, "Right Place Right Time."
The Official Charts Company confirmed that opening sales of just under 127,000 made it the fastest-selling male solo album of the year to date.
Murs reached No. 2 with his 2010 self-titled debut but the new release is his second bestseller in a row, after last year's "In Case You Didn't Know." He took over at the summit as One Direction's former No. 1 "Take Me Home" held in runner-up spot and last week's champion, Rihanna's "Unapologetic," fell to No. 3.
The festive entries by Michael Bublé and Rod Stewart, "Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Baby" respectively, each improved one places at Nos. 4 and 5. Robbie Williams' "Take The Crown" moved back up 10-6 and Emeli Sandé's "Our Version Of Events" 8-7. The two newcomers in the top ten were "The Very Best Of Neil Diamond" and Girls Aloud's "Ten" at an anticlimactic No. 9. "Now!
