Whether it is the digital management of energy supply, thermal storage power plants as a clean route away from coal, autonomous flying multicopters that monitor the solar fields, or high-tech analysis technology for batteries of the next generation and beyond – the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will be present at the Hannover Messe to showcase future-oriented technologies and concepts for the implementation of the Energy Transition, as well as products and services that have successfully made their way from research into practical applications in industry thanks to DLR Technology Marketing. From 1 to 5 April 2019, under the central theme 'Taking energy further', visitors to the DLR stand (Hall 27, Stand H70) will find out how the digitally networked and intelligent energy system of tomorrow will look.

Digital technologies continue to transform nearly every aspect of our business and personal lives, from the use of payment technologies to manufacturing production lines and the ways we write, read and communicate. This transformation is happening despite, or maybe because of, the crises we face. Digitalisation reshapes the economy and disrupts traditional industries, and allows us to address the geopolitical, economic and social challenges ahead. Yet, delivering on the digital dividend in a cyber safe environment requires a “system upgrade”. And that “system upgrade” is the focus of this event. The EBRD has made the digitalisation of its economies and its clients a major priority, by launching a digital strategy for the years ahead and upgrading the support to clients and investors in their digital ambitions. This panel brings together leading voices in digital change, including investors, business and policy leaders, to discuss key questions around new technologies and the digital world. They also explore issues related to digital transition in EBRD economies, such as market concentration, risks to cybersecurity and the fear of automation.

When you picture buildings that embody global culture, such as the Guggenheim Museum by the American architect Frank O. Gehry in Bilbao, Spain (1997) and the Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg by Herzog & de Meuron, you can hardly imagine the problems Hans Scharoun encountered in the mid-1950s with his design for the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. And that was not among politicians, who were initially astonished, or enthusiastic architecture experts, but rather most particularly with the engineering and building-site offices. These days, highly sophisticated design computers can effortlessly master the most complicated geometry. Consequently, the digitalisation and computerisation of the construction process has infused the present-day world of architectural images with a design engineering and technical normality that just 20 or 30 years ago would have been laughed off as a crazy fiction that could not be built. That must have happened to Hans Scharoun as well when, somewhat more than 50 years ago, he went public in Berlin with his spatial vision of a concert hall that places the music at its architectural centre.
