Mónica Rikić focuses her artistic practice on creative coding and electronics, combining them with non-digital objects to craft interactive projects, robotic installations, and handmade electronic devices.
Hipertèlia is the term used in Catalan to describe the enlargement of an organ to the extent that it no longer fulfills its function. Cognitive technologies have become an overdeveloped organ, generating anxiety and uncertainty about the future. What agency do we have in defining this future? This exhibition suggests possible alternatives for the evolution of artificial intelligences through handmade electronic devices.
MÓNICA RIKIĆ is an electronic artist and creative coder, born and based in Barcelona. The general interest of her artistic practice lies in the development of alternative technologies through creative coding and electronics. Her proposals merge technology and philosophy through art, creating technological artifacts far from the need of any functionality or productivity, just for the sake of building critical devices that trigger collective thinking and discussion. Formally, her practice is based in producing handmade electronics objects and robots, that perform different concepts of her research scope, presenting themselves as theatrical devices. With these devices, she offers experiences that propose alternative ways of thinking about technologies, robotics and hardware. Through this process, her works aim to ‘question if’ and ‘illustrate how’ artistic research is a valid way to rethink and collaborate with the advancement of techno-scientific knowledge, providing new perspectives and generating unknown paths of exploration. She wants to present a future where art is necessary to achieve a profound transformation of the technological world we inhabit, as a form of experimental thought between philosophy and engineering.

Here is our annual list of technological advances that we believe will make a real difference in solving important problems. How do we pick? We avoid the one-off tricks, the overhyped new gadgets. Instead we look for those breakthroughs that will truly change how we live and work.
Unhackable internet
Hyper-personalized medicine
Digital money
Anti-aging drugs
AI-discovered molecules
Satellite mega-constellations
Quantum supremacy
Tiny AI
Differential privacy
Climate change attribution
We’re excited to announce that with this year’s list we’re also launching our very first editorial podcast, Deep Tech, which will explore the the people, places, and ideas featured in our most ambitious journalism.

Andrea de Chicero - Superlocal
in C-mine designcentrum
How can products be made locally with the aid of digital technologies?
Modern technology could bring about a return to local production. SUPERLOCAL regards the city as a production site. In this project, Andrea de Chirico develops short production lines in a specific urban context. Making products locally reduces the need for transport and is thus less harmful to the environment. At the same time, it creates a new urban dynamic and generates employment. Resources, materials and labour all found within a short bike ride are connected in order to make everyday objects, such as a hair dryer. The objects can be produced locally and are released in an open production database.
In the context of MANUFACTUUR 3.0, Andrea de Chirico is developing a SUPERLOCAL edition in Genk. The project starts with a survey of the available raw materials and expertise, and proceeds to develop a prototype specifically for Genk, in Genk. The product will be produceable entirely locally.

One of my most favorite photos of the Motorola DCT 2000 analogue/digital cable box...beautifully designed style.. I found the pic. on the web, & don't know who took the original photo. I don't know who designed this bit of tech, but, they clearly did it w/ forethought for style & sophistication to match the new, & exciting frontier of digital cable TV tech, which Motorola was at the forefront of, at the beginning of the new millennium; nothing bland or boring here! Finally, something truly lovely & unique-looking to put in the AV rack.
