Flaka, how she likes to be called, which means skinny in Spanish, is an incredible girl I met in Dominican Republic in the orphanage of San Pedro where I spent the last two weeks of June 2017. Not only she is stunningly beautiful, she is clever, funny, and truly amazing. With the help of NPH, the non-profit organisation I worked with, and all the wonderful people who "sponsor" her–help her with long-distance adoptions–she just graduated and looks forward to start university.
What is truly inspiring about her, and to be honest everyone inside the orphanage, is how much love she gives. All the kids have incredible stories, most of them tragic, but still they have found a new family that loves them more than anyone blood-related could ever do. The children of this orphanage understand how lucky they are. They know that if they weren't here they would work every day, 7 to 19, in the sugar cane fields, from when they're 7 until they can still do it.
Flaka was in her year of service, something the orphanage does in order to teach the kids they always have to be grateful for what they've received. Basically, when you're done with you journey you have to work in the orphanage for one year, so that you can "repay" them for what they've given you. You can work in the garden, in the kitchen, in the bakery, in the house of the volunteers and so on. She worked in the house of the volunteers, that's how I got to know her. She was truly a fantastic person and I am grateful I had the change to meet her.
These portraits were shot in her house, with only natural light. Even if she doesn't acts like it, she has never been photographed before. She looks like a model but she's just an orphan with incredible expressive eyes.
