A series of 6 photos shot at Legion Ascot Speedway at the end of the 1930 Pacific Southwest Season for client Dayton Manufacturing Company ordered by Nelson Price of The Weinberg Agency from Dick Whittington Studios. by Dayton Manufacturing Co.
The Dick Whittington Studios was the premiere commercial photography company in the Los Angeles area in the 20s through 40s.
Shared by Michael Ferner - unknown source that seems to match this promotional photo shoot:
"Francis Quinn, who today receives the beautiful Dick Dodd's (sic! ) Trophy symbolic of the 1930 Pacific Southwest Championship, needs no introduction to the race fans of the Legion Ascot Speedway. He has long been one of the most colorful and spectacular drivers on California tracks and has won himself a host of admirers. Always a clean sportsman and ever willing to give the other fellow a break he typifies all that is clean and fine in the great international sport of automobile racing. At the beginning of the season he had a lot of luck, and it was all bad, but he quickly over rode his many difficulties, and once started, swept on to the Championship. Francis plans on even a greater year in 1931, and for some time has been building a new race car which he expects to have finished and on the track some time in February, with this new car he feels justified in hoping to win the title two years in succession. He will also receive today the beautiful Carrol Photo Service Trophy, which is awarded to the driver, who, with his pit crew, makes the neatest appearance throughout the year. The winning of this trophy is very commendable and bespeaks the characteristics of a champion. (Additionally, Quinn's #8 Dayton Thorobred Special won second place, both in points and in the Frank Verbeck Trophy for best appearing cars)."
Father Hugh Craig, son of John Craig & Edith Robideau.
A number of images by and of Father Hugh Craig are posted at the University of Southern California's Digital Library. This image of Father Hugh, the Bishop, the Monsignor, and the men and child who ferry people across the river is cropped from a larger image for clarity. Father Hugh is in the middle of the image. The Early Days of Radio
earlyradiohistory.us/1925KRCA.htm
The studio located in a small structure in the industrial tent has been attractively equipped with beautiful draperies, rugs and lighting apparatus. A grand piano has been installed in the room for the use of the artists broadcasting. Draperies on the walls serve to give the correct acoustic qualities for the deadening of echo.
At one end of the studio, separated from the broadcasting room, is the operators room where the mechanical equipment is located. L. G. E. Rhodes, official operator in charge of the station, controls the clarity and wave length of the concerts through variance of adjustments on the control panel.
The sides of the studio are windowed providing visitors a view into both the broadcasting and the operators room. Crowds were jammed against the studio all day yesterday, many persons standing there during the entire program to satiate their curiosity as to the workings of a real broadcasting station. Artists could be seen broadcasting inside the studio and large loudspeakers throughout the tent carried the selection to the visitors.
Acting as announcer is B. C. McDonald, sales director of the Radio Corporation of America for the Southern California district, who also supervised the installation of the station at the fair.
Programs will be announced each day and the station will be on the air on the usual wave length from 2:30 to 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon and from 7 to 10 o'clock in the evening.

Fargo/Jackson, the oldest and most vibrant street in Indio quickly adapted to the trickle of single male railroad workers in the early 1900s and then waves of DWP viaduct workers in the 1930s and finally locally stationed soldiers in the 1940s.
It appears that Fargo/Jackson became the honky-tonk alley (wonder how stately Harris Company felt being in the midst of this?) and the 'family oriented' Miles Av around the corner became the retail center.
Indio's 'Combat Zone'
From longtime resident Bob Tyler:

Hi Carl, there's a Periscope that has articles about the MWD and Indio in the 30's and early 40's. I think there are references to the Jackhammer, Passtime and a few other bars on Fargo St. There were the MWD hardrock miners, and then there were Patton's soldiers, so Indio was a boomtown with lots of liquor gambling and brothels."

Photograph of aerial view of bow of U.S.S. Missouri, 1908. At center, several men and women are scattered across the massive wooden, frontal-deck. At the bottom of the image, a small family stands below the massive turret guns pointing forward. To the right, two passengers sit near an open hatch adjacent to two wide pipes on deck. At center to the left, a woman looks down a stairwell that leads below deck. At center, three men look down and step on top of a large rectangular hatch. At center near the top, several passengers lean on the guardrails of the ship and look at the ocean below. Several round cylinders and other metallic objects lie scattered on the bow. Anchor chains are clearly visible along the center.

A Geron sp., bodylength 3.5-4mm, wing length ~5mm. Photographed in my backyard, Hobart, Tasmania.
Determined using both Yeates (1994) and Hull (1973) - the former reference is a monstrous paper on the cladistics and classification of Bombyliidae (free to download but beware it's 40MB).
There's also a good free paper on Geron spp. of Australia and the Pacific - Evenhuis (1979) (4.4MB).
Having the first antennal segment clearly more than three times as long as the second places this in subgenus Plichtamyia. There are two Tasmanian species - G. (Plichtamyia) dispar & G. (Plichtamyia) nigrocciput. The silver spot below the occellar tubercle on the head (see second shot below), and the two toned haltere knobs (dark above, light below) are two characters of a few which are easily seen and only belong to the former species.

"Why throw the Garter? The garter is said to be a substitute for the ribbon which the lady presented her champion knight of King Arthur's Round Table who gallantly carried her colors into battle. The Order of the Garter was formed in England in the fourteenth century, as an honor given to distinguished noblemen who to this day wear a heraldic garter as part of their ceremonial garb. Nowadays, the garter is tossed to the single men at the reception; the recipient, according to myth, will be the next to marry."

The photo shoot with Nancy Carroll and Earl Devore and his racecar at the close by Culver City Boardtrack was paid for by The Music Box Theater which had just changed its focus from offering 'revues' (in the Ziegfeld style) in the auditorium and dancing and illicit drinking upstairs in the open air cabaret space to one of offering legitimate, big time theater. Clark Gable and Nancy Carroll were headliners in the opening of the West Coast Premier of the play, Chicago. Nancy was sent over to the track with local Whittington Studio photographers to get some shots that could be used in promoting the opening of the play. Looks like Earl and the boys were only too willing to be a part of this.
