On this final day of Teacher Appreciation Week :-)

Description

Photograph of children in Arab costume learning a unit about Arab culture at the 99th Street School, [s.d.]. Ten boys and girls can be seen seated in a semi-circle on the ground at center. They all wear native Arab dress, including robes, headdresses, and scarves across their faces. Five student-drawn pieces of artwork can be seen hanging on the wall above the children. Most of the drawings include camels and palm trees, while a professional painting can be seen hung above the students' work. The teacher is visible seated at a piano at left. The tops of the heads of two children appear to be in the extreme foreground. Photoprint reads: "The songs, dances and folklore of many other countries are taught Los Angeles children in a dramatic and interesting manner as evidenced by the scene above [refering to image] in the Ninety Ninth Street school".

The approximate relative coverage and size of selected digital libraries described in the section Digital Libraries, DOIs, and URIs,

Of all the libraries described, Google Scholar probably has the widest coverage. However, it is currently not clear exactly how much information Google indexes, what the criteria are for inclusion in the index, and whether it subsumes other digital libraries in the way shown in the figure. Note: the size of sets (circles) in this diagram is NOT proportional to their size, and DBLP, Scopus, and arXiv are shown as a single set for clarity rather than correctness.

Weirdly PubMedCentral is NOT a true subset of www.PubMed.gov, and uses a completely different identity mechanism (eh?). Annoyingly, we may never know exactly how big Google Scholar is, although it is a great tool, size is currently unknown to the general public...

A series of 6 photos shot at Legion Ascot Speedway at the end of the 1930 Pacific Southwest Season for client Dayton Manufacturing Company ordered by Nelson Price of The Weinberg Agency from Dick Whittington Studios. by Dayton Manufacturing Co.

The Dick Whittington Studios was the premiere commercial photography company in the Los Angeles area in the 20s through 40s.

Shared by Michael Ferner - unknown source that seems to match this promotional photo shoot:

"Francis Quinn, who today receives the beautiful Dick Dodd's (sic! ) Trophy symbolic of the 1930 Pacific Southwest Championship, needs no introduction to the race fans of the Legion Ascot Speedway. He has long been one of the most colorful and spectacular drivers on California tracks and has won himself a host of admirers. Always a clean sportsman and ever willing to give the other fellow a break he typifies all that is clean and fine in the great international sport of automobile racing. At the beginning of the season he had a lot of luck, and it was all bad, but he quickly over rode his many difficulties, and once started, swept on to the Championship. Francis plans on even a greater year in 1931, and for some time has been building a new race car which he expects to have finished and on the track some time in February, with this new car he feels justified in hoping to win the title two years in succession. He will also receive today the beautiful Carrol Photo Service Trophy, which is awarded to the driver, who, with his pit crew, makes the neatest appearance throughout the year. The winning of this trophy is very commendable and bespeaks the characteristics of a champion. (Additionally, Quinn's #8 Dayton Thorobred Special won second place, both in points and in the Frank Verbeck Trophy for best appearing cars)."

1930 A.A.A. Pacific Southwest Champion Francis Quinn is at Legion Ascot to unveil his new Miller Marine racecar.

Joining him is teammate Walt May who will drive the 1930 team car - Dayton Thorobred Special in the upcoming 1931 season.

Joining them is actress Betty Brown bottle in hand to provide the proper christening.

Quinn went on to a stellar season always fighting for another championship with the best in the business but unfortunately perishing in a traffic accident in December.

Walt May had moments of brilliance in the old Thorobred Special but was involved in an accident at San Jose May 21, 1931 and succumbed to his injuries June 23rd.

Betty Brown was very representative of many of the fading actresses that appeared at the popular Legion Ascot Speedway - who were pushed into any available spotlight by their agents, always hoping for a revival of popularity. Within a few months she would be divorced from her hard drinking, womanizing, riotous husband Ted Healy; her best years were in the silent movies and the best she could do in the talkies was playing the part of character actress in three stooges and Oliver and Hardy comedies. She passed away in Victorville CA in 1975.
