The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), also known as the tiger owl or the hoot owl, is a large owl native to the Americas. It is an extremely adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. Its primary diet appears to be rabbits and hares, rats and mice and voles, although it freely hunts any animal it can overtake, primarily other rodents and small mammals, but also larger mid-sized mammals, various birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

This room is part of the Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle and is known as the Diet Hall. It was built in the late Gothic style and used for meetings of the Bohemian Estates. The hall is notable for its impressive ribbed vaulting and the royal throne placed beneath a canopy decorated with the emblem of Bohemia. Here, important political and judicial sessions were held, along with ceremonial events.

acorns in a plash of water

- Acorn: the typically ovoid fruit or nut of an oak, enclosed at the base by a cupule.

The acorn, or oak nut, usually contains a single seed (rarely two seeds), enclosed in a tough, leathery shell, and borne in a cup-shaped cupule. Acorns vary from 1–6 cm long and 0.8–4 cm broad. Acorns take between about 6 and 24 months (depending on the species) to mature.

Acorns play an important role in forest ecology when oaks are the dominant species or are plentiful. The volume of the acorn crop may vary wildly, creating great abundance or great stress on the many animals dependent on acorns and the predators of those animals. Acorns, along with other nuts, are termed mast.

Wildlife which eat acorns as an important part of their diets include birds, such as jays, pigeons, some ducks, and several species of woodpeckers. Small mammals that feed on acorns include mice, squirrels and several other rodents.

Large mammals such as pigs, bears, and deer also consume large amounts of acorns; they may constitute up to 25% of the diet of deer in the autumn.

Some animals, such as squirrels and jays serve as seed dispersal agents. Jays and squirrels that scatter-hoard acorns in caches for future use, effectively plant acorns in a variety of locations in which it is possible for them to germinate and thrive.

Even though jays and squirrels retain remarkably large mental maps of cache locations and return to consume them, the odd acorn may be lost, or a jay or squirrel may die before consuming all of its stores. A small number of acorns manage to germinate and survive, producing the next generation of oaks.

The Sayaca Tanager is widely distributed across South America, ranging from eastern Brazil and Bolivia to northern Argentina. It prefers open woodlands, gardens, and urban spaces, adapting well to human presence. Its diet consists of fruits, seeds, and insects, and it often forages in small flocks. While Sayaca Tanagers usually have a calm demeanor, this photograph reveals an unusual display of anger towards another tanager.

///boils.weeks.acrobatic

The Eurasian Siskin (Spinus spinus) is a small, lively songbird in the finch family (Fringillidae), known for its acrobatic feeding style and vibrant yellow-green plumage.

Key Characteristics

Appearance:

Males are distinctive with a bright yellow breast, black crown, and a small black bib. Females and juveniles are more subdued, appearing grey-green with heavy dark streaking on their undersides and no black cap. Both sexes have prominent yellow wing bars and a deeply forked tail with yellow sides.

Size:

They are very small, typically 11–12.5 cm long with a wingspan of 20–23 cm.

Diet:

Primarily granivorous, they specialize in extracting seeds from conifers (like spruce), alder, and birch trees. In spring, they may supplement their diet with insects to provide protein for their chicks.

Behavior:

Siskins are highly social and often form compact, mobile flocks, sometimes mixing with redpolls. They are famous for their agility, frequently hanging upside-down to reach seeds.

Habitat and Distribution

Range:

They are widespread across Europe and Asia (Eurosiberia) and parts of North Africa.

Habitat:

They favor coniferous and mixed woodlands, particularly those with spruce, pine, or alder trees.

Movement:

While some southern populations are residents, northern birds are migratory. They exhibit "irruptive" behavior, where large numbers may migrate south unpredictably if seed crops fail in their northern range.

Breeding and Lifecycle

Nesting:

Females build small, neat nests high in conifer trees using twigs, moss, and lichen, lined with hair or feathers.

Reproduction:

They typically lay 3–5 eggs and can raise up to two broods per year between April and July.

Conservation Status:

The species is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable global population estimated between 24 and 46 million mature individuals.

Garden Interaction

In the UK and other parts of Europe, siskins have become more common garden visitors, especially in late winter when natural food supplies dwindle. They are particularly attracted to niger seeds, sunflower hearts, and peanuts in mesh feeders.

One of the target birds in my most recent trip to Ladakh and we got plenty of them. The Horned Lark, locally known as "chipa-gut" or "up-tshakir," is a resident bird of Ladakh's high-altitude alpine and cold desert environments. This small, ground-dwelling bird were seen in plenty in a number of places. It was nesting and we got a few with the small, black "horn-like" feather tufts on their heads.

Horned Larks forage on open ground for insects and seeds, rarely perching. During breeding, males become territorial, engaging in songs and aerial displays. Their nests are shallow ground depressions, camouflaged by nearby rocks or vegetation. As omnivores, their diet includes various insects and seeds.

Many thanks in advance for your views, faves and feedback - very much appreciated.

The tide was receding leaving an amazing assembly of worm casts and tiny depressed feeding pits. They are made by lugworms who have U shaped burrows beneath the sand and seabed. They eat microorganisms and organic debris. They are eaten by curlews, oystercatchers and godwits – plus crabs and fish! Some escape and live for several years.

After charging in the creek after salmon and missing on several swats, this lad decided to take a moment and reevaluate his fishing style…while also contemplating switching over to eating old fat Italian guys!

An eastern grey squirrel eating an acorn in the backyard Garry oak tree. Saanich, Vancouver Island, BC.

During the autumn and winter months, the eastern grey squirrel’s diet consists mainly of nuts and seeds. Throughout the year, tree squirrels store large quantities of seeds and nuts, especially acorns to see them through the winter months.

Tree squirrels are one of the most important animals for helping oaks spread, because they store acorns in the ground, helping to maintain and regenerate second-growth oak forests.

Northern Barred Owl

The Barred Owl (Strix varia), or Northern Barred Owl, is a true owl native to eastern North America. Adults are large, and are brown to grey with barring on the chest. Barred owls have expanded their range to the west coast of the United States, where they are considered invasive. Mature forests are their preferred habitat, but they are also found in open woodland areas. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, but they are also known to prey upon other small animals such as reptiles and amphibians.

Silvered Langured Monkeys are found in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia of South East Asia. They are mainly a leaf eating monkey and have a three compartment stomach to help breakdown their food. They also eat fruit and seeds but that only makes up about 9% of their diet.

This little one is being groomed by his/her momma. They are born with orange fur but this little one is already getting some of it's silver coloring as it is growing up fast.
