This story mentions this cover at Potbelly's:

"Framed on the wall at Potbelly Sandwich Works is a Life Magazine cover depicting a college-aged couple holding hands in a loveseat, looking endearingly into each other's eyes with an alluring caption that reads, "Co-Ed Dorms: an intimate revolution on campus." The faded cover ran November 20, 1970, when college students were protesting an unpopular war and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was the top song on the airwaves. Now, nearly 40 years later, when college students are again protesting an unpopular war (though with less vigor) and Akon's "Don't Matter" dominates radio play, another intimate revolution may be hitting the campus.

Visitors travelling on Highway 38 stop to ask BLM staff about the controlled burn.

Megan Harper, BLM

#DidYouKnow that controlled fire can actually improve habitat for some #Oregon wildlife? 🔥

Once a year, our fire teams perform a prescribed burn at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area. This helps improve forage for the herd of 100 Roosevelt Elk who call the area home.

This year, firefighters from BLM and Diamond Fire successfully burned over 100 acres of pastureland. Afterwards, a small crew remained onsite to ensure the fire was completely out.

Around 150 visitors stopped by the Elk Viewing Area over the two day burn to learn about the operation and ask after the elk.

It usually takes about a week for the green grass to sprout through the blackened hay, creating a new, delectable buffet for the elk!

This purple vegetable has names. In American English it goes as an eggplant, in South African and South Asian Englishes as a brinjal, in British English as an aubergine, and in the language of emojis, well, we’ll talk about that some other time.

In all the names for this bulbous vegetable, there is one that truly sticks out. Many words have traveled, but when it comes to linguistic miles covered, it would be hard to beat the aubergine. It rises above all.

The aubergine spread its seed far and wide before reaching the English language. It came to English from Sanskrit via Persian, Arabic, Catalan, and French. That’s some serious wanderlust.

This week we’ll look at some other words that have earned the well-traveled designation, words that have bounced around before planting their flag in the English language.

On a different note, this Saturday I drove all the way to Lumen Field, a football stadium here in Seattle, and it turned out no game was taking place. So disappointing! Not!

Some 8,000 people were getting vaccinated that day. I too had an appointment. Got my first Pfizer shot. Here's to science! And to adults being in charge of running the country again!

New research puts us one step closer to unlocking the secret. Researchers from Dalian University of Technology in China used computer tomography (CT) scans of a real-life woodpecker to construct a detailed, digital model of its body. Then they used software to simulate the bird's pecking--a process that can force the woodpecker's head to endure up to 1500 g-force units. For comparison's sake, a passenger on a typical roller coaster will only experience about 5 g's.

Science China Press

A schematic of the woodpecker's pecking process.

The study, published this month in Science China: Technological Sciences, shows that the key to the woodpecker's survival lies in how it converts the energy it absorbs. When a woodpecker strikes a tree, the impact energy--energy that is released during a collision--is converted to strain energy in the body. Too much strain in the head can be catastrophic, but the woodpecker's incredible anatomy--including a specialized beak and skull--redirects most of the strain into the rest of the body, instead of the head.

In fact, 99.7 percent of the strain energy is converted in the woodpecker's body, and only 0.3 percent is converted in the head. This small amount of strain is quickly dissipated from the head in the form of heat. This process protects the brain from damage, but causes temperatures inside the skull to rise quickly, meaning woodpeckers have to take frequent breaks while they're pecking. In this way, the woodpecker's whole body is involved in the fight to protect its brain from damage.

Even when ya don't feel like it.

Did you know?

That Darwin was never actually a scientist? The most scientific training he got was 2 years of medical training, and then he dropped out. Even then most of his time was spent in bars, so he didn't learn very much. After taking a voyage over-seas and participating in witch-craft there, he came home different, changed. Not only was he totally against God, but he also got very ill , frail, and weakened. He then spent the rest of his life forming a new "possibility" of a creation with out God. He himself said that even though his theory had flaws, it was still accomplishing his goal. To make people doubt God. Most of his ideas were taken from stories his grandpa told him.

Did You Know:

The "Starship Troopers" movie wasn't based on the Heinlein Novel.

It was based on a B movie script called "Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine".

But someone pointed out to the Heinlein-hating schlock director, Paul Verhoeven, that the Starship Troopers novel had "bugs" in it.

He then wrangled the book rights from Robert Heinlein's widow, renaming some characters and altering some details to fit.

But when he tried to read the book for the film, he gave up after a couple of chapters, because he felt "bored and depressed".

He then went out of his way to make the movie a passive-aggressive attack on the book and Heinlein's philosophy of community service.

In fact, the film's visuals ended up being based more on Verhoeven's experiences living among the Nazis as a child, which he says in interviews he found exciting.

This is why there were no mechs (though they had enough CGI budget to animate millions of "bugs"), but just guys running around firing machine guns no more advanced than the mid 20th century.

Even the propaganda segments were directly based on Nazi newsreels.

Don’t vacillate when it’s time to vaccinate. But until a COVID-19 vaccine appears, the next best thing is to wear a mask. Some are resistant to the idea, so we see billboards with encouraging messages: “Real Heros Wear Masks”

No, wearing a mask does not make you a hero. Neither is having to wear a mask some sort of tyranny any more than having to wear a seat belt is. But if you need a medal, we can nominate you for a Presidential Medal of Freedom. They are going cheap these days.*

Roman tragedian Seneca (4 BC–AD 65) is said to have read "all the books in Rome" by peering through a glass globe of water. A thousand years later, presbyopic monks used segments of glass spheres that could be laid against reading material to magnify the letters, basically a magnifying glass, called a "reading stone." They based their invention on the theories of the Arabic mathematician Alhazen (roughly 1000 AD). Yet, Greek philosopher Aristophanes (c. 448 BC-380 BC) knew that glass could be used as a magnifying glass. Nevertheless it was not until roughly 150 AD that Ptolemy discovered the basic rules of light diffraction and wrote extensively on the subject.
