Did manage to get the whole Male Bearded Tit in shot, amongst the reeds, but there was quite a lot of vegetation clutter. Thought it worked a bit better as a close crop - helped by the fact that he popped up quite close to me.

Week 52 in 52 Weeks for Dogs and another year, and another project, comes to its end. This is my fifteenth year in the group, something I wouldn't have thought possible when I started. I did a total of six years with Taivas and the other nine years have been with Tasku. I have so many photos to treasure, not just the 778 I have in the group but many more taken along the way. Special times with my dogs and wonderful memories.

I finish this year with a version of 'Did someone say cake?' - a shot I've had in mind for a long time. I wish I'd been able to set it up better but I don't have much space and on this occasion, didn't have much time either.

I did a shoot a few months ago with each member of 'The Dollheads' but I never ended up doing Erin so here she is with her trusty Key-tar ;-D

Today a celebration. The whole herd, some 20 mountain goats, have finally found their way to our side of the mountain in time for some winter shots. They were all pretty intent on festive feeding this afternoon and I was glad to be close enough to follow them.

They did dine in family units. Occasional disputes arose when the little guys wandered into a male's space from another unit.

It did occur to me, during the period that GBRF ran the Deltic "Royal Scots Grey" during late spring and Early summer in 2011, that the first, or last portion of its short journey from the Lynemouth Aluminium Smelter to the North Blyth Aluminia import silos, that this section of line ran along the coastal sand dunes. In fact there had been colliery tipping on the beach up to the end of the 1960s here from Cambois colliery. There is a picture of this in one of Colin Giffords books. And Gone Forever, plate 213 to be precise.

But there were scant few in the hundreds of photographers who turned up during that time who acknowledged this obvious fact. Well, you would have to arrive early, and not many then shot in dull conditions.

So a calculation was made. The sun would rise over the sea at an acute angle in the mid winter, and the train for Fort William left on Saturday at 09:02, around half an hour after sunrise. Prone to run a little early too..

Keep an eye on the forecast and go. So long as the empties ran the day the day before.

Postscript:

The Lynemouth smelter, which received three trains each weekday from here, closed in March 2012, leaving from then on two to three trains a week to Fort William from this terminal.

Sometimes the first picture is the best. I could leave this place alone but there is something here, there is not another place like it and its not just the sea and the structures. Its everything that made what it is now, and what it was before. Life feels different in the North. For all its economic inequalities, life feels better up here, the melancholic celebration of life in the North is symphony for the soul.

The Hydrangeas did very well this year, although in general the heads are smaller probably due to the hot summer.

Now some have been dried and form a lovely dash of colour in the room.

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.

Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate blooms.

Of course, even the experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.

So, while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love, a gift of flowers for a special someone will always create its own personal meaning, too.

I did OK with my take on the Black Skimmers a few days back, but I wanted to make some adjustments: (1) don't shoot through the creek edge weeds - even though the camera held focus on the bird, the fuzzy plant foreground kinda hazed over the bird sometimes. So I sat closer to the water. (2) That included another improvement, a lower POV from the last session where I was standing. (3) Try faster shutter speeds to freeze those skim trails. So today I tried my 70-200 f/2.8 with a 1.4 tele, for a happy f-stop of 4. Last session I used my 200-600, wide open at f/6.3, which is a difference of 2 stops. That's big in low light, and I needed it because they started skimming 15 minutes later and the sun was completely gone from the creek bed, though for awhile it lit the far side and did make some really colorful reflections, like here.

Two years ago we did a road trip from California to Utah. We drove along the Extraterrestrial Highway in Nevada, and stopped at the Little A'Le'Inn, located near the mysterious Area 51. An old truck is parked in front of the restaurant. It was very windy that night, and I had to take several shots until I got one where the flying saucer was not moving too much.

I processed a paintery and a balanced HDR photo from four RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

There's pink in this image? Really? I hadn't noticed. :)

I picked up a very cheap bunch of pink Carnations in the supermarket a couple of weeks ago and they still look amazing! The porcelain half doll dates back to the 1930s and would originally have been sitting on top of a pin cushion. The 'feathers' on her hat are actually a piece of eyelash yarn just draped across. :)

I did!! On Monday, I did something new in Second Life. I visited the gallery of Opie and Melissa, also known as The Kiko Sisters. Since I was rather lazy, I didn't describe the artworks myself but let Artificial Intelligence do it.
