This public fórum, held on 23 April 2018 in Maputo, shared the results of the report on the business landscape for Mozambican manufacturing firms.
The event shed light on the current challenges faced by micro-, small- and medium-sized firms in the country’s manufacturing sector — and how policy can tackle these issues to allow firms to thrive. Special attention was paid to the business environment in which these enterprises operate.

GRP partnered with Chris Lloyd of McGuire Woods and McGuireWoods Consulting for a reception welcoming our new President + CEO Lara Fritts, the City of Richmond’s Leonard Sledge and Henrico Economic Development’s Anthony Romanello to the region’s economic development community. Leonard and Anthony join Hanover’s Linwood Thomas and Chesterfield’s Garrett Hart as leaders of their respective offices.
Mayor Ras J. Baraka, members of the Newark Municipal Council, Deputy Mayor of Workforce Development and Employment Rahaman Muhammad, Manager of Port Activities for the City of Newark Al Turrick Kenney, and several community partners including the clergy, the Newark Branch of the NAACP, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (NJISJ), the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition (NAVC), YDI Youth Build and the People’s Organization for Progress today held a march and rally for jobs at Port Newark & Elizabeth.
The marchers gathered at noon at 132 Corbin Street, Building 1200, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The marchers demanded that the Waterfront Commission, the New York Shipping Association, and the International Longshoremen’s Association do more to remedy severe racial, gender and ethnic inequality in employment at the Port and an apparent bias against the hiring of local residents.
“Port jobs have an enormous potential to boost the economies of Newark and Elizabeth, two cities struggling with high unemployment and underemployment. Port jobs can be an important source of well-paying middle class jobs. Yet, clearly, those hired to work at the Port are not representative of the diversity of the surrounding community,” said Mayor Baraka.
“International Longshoremen’s Locals 1 and 1804-1 both have fewer than 6% Black members and under 13% Hispanic members. Local 1804-1 has no women. The Port is located in one of the nation’s most diverse communities. Newark and Elizabeth have a combined Black and Latino population of 77%. The two locals remain segregated despite years of attempts by the Waterfront Commission, civil rights organizations and the City of Newark to desegregate the Port,” he added.
A 2015 report that stated that of the 3,299 registered longshore workers at the Port, only 299 (6.3%) had Newark addresses and that of the 3,299 workers, 2,055 are white, 787 Black, 410 Hispanic, 17 Asian and 30 others. Only 302 were women. Most of the Black workers (523 of 787) come from the predominantly Black I.L.A. Local 1233.
In March of this year, Mayor Baraka sent letters to both Venita Gupta, head of the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice and US Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez requesting that they thoroughly investigate the extent and causes of inequity in hiring for jobs at the Port of Newark and Elizabeth and “act to remedy severe racial, gender and ethnic inequality in employment at the Port and an apparent bias against the hiring of local residents.” He also asked the Attorney General to determine whether federal Civil Rights laws have been violated.

Weather forecast: rainy days during all this week, and my head was asking for a clear sunny day.
Until that doesn't happen, I was looking at an old cell phone camera that seems to refuse to die, and pondering about its final destiny. In the memory card, I did found a picture from a 2005-2006 summer, a shadow shot of myself. I try to send the picture to an email account and it did work. (After, I did a fake frame Holga 35 mm around the image with the help of bighugelabs.com tools.)
Sometimes I though to think that this picture already gets filmic colours from start, red desert, concrete desert, even in the case that the frame wasn't inducing to think about film cameras.
From this point of view, maybe the final resulting image also fits in the Development theme. ;-)

A pair of 'raised beds' and two largish planters have been added to the new 'garden' area at Linkwood Crescent.
This house and barn combination is part of what is called the Holder Farm in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County. The House was built circa 1836 in the federal style. Classic elements of the federal style are present including rounded fan light over the front door, symmetrical construction, and embellished brickwork in gables, chimneys, as well as Flemish bond facade. The tract on which the house and barn now stand, totaling over 300 acres, will be developed in the near future.
