24, 25, and 26 May 2023, Barcelona – The Union for the Mediterranean, in collaboration with ANIMA Investment Network will organize a Conference on “Aligning investments with sustainability and corporate responsibility – The digitalization of impact measurement’’, in Barcelona (Palau Reial de Pedralbes) with the support of the German Development Cooperation and EBSOMED.
Investments, particularly Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), are intended to contribute to the socioeconomic development of host countries by creating decent jobs, generating income, favoring technology transfer and skills development, and boosting productive sectors and services, among other advantages. However, not all FDI necessarily positively affect environmental and social aspects when it comes to their own business model and impact.
Worldwide commitments, for example, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Reporting, set out a series of principles and guidelines which promote environmental sustainability and social inclusion. In this framework, it is crucial for Business Support Organizations and Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) to scrutinize investment projects based on sustainable international standards to prioritize those which are economically profitable, environmentally sustainable, and socially inclusive.
In this context, this joint Conference will be the occasion to showcase several initiatives aiming at driving private investments towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals as well as to have an exchange on how to use concrete tools to assess their performance in terms of economic, environmental, and social effects.
This event is intended for participants from the UfM countries representing:
Public institutions, private sector and business support organizations
Investment Promotion Agencies IPAs
Investors and international financing and development institutions
Think tanks and Research Centers
The UfM will sponsor up to 30 participants from non-EU countries based on their profile and geographical and gender balance. Selected peopled will be contacted in due course.

This public fórum, held on 23 April 2018 in Maputo, shared the results of the report on the business landscape for Mozambican manufacturing firms.
The event shed light on the current challenges faced by micro-, small- and medium-sized firms in the country’s manufacturing sector — and how policy can tackle these issues to allow firms to thrive. Special attention was paid to the business environment in which these enterprises operate.

Pernell Residence

Style: Midcentury Modern Contemporary Interpretation
The Pernell Residence Is a 2100 sq ft house designed by Ralph Haver in 1995 as his family’s second personal residence in Phoenix and therefore one of the Ultimate Haver Homes designed to meet the needs of a family with three boys. In 1958 Haver added a 700 sq ft guest quarters for his mother-in-law. In 2003 current owners Harry and Linda Pernell added the 400 sq ft storage and workshop that reflects Haver’s design proportions down to the inch.
The Haver family lived here for about 10 years—between 1965 and 1999 the home went through a variety of structural, mechanical and aesthetic changes. Prior to purchase by the Pernells, a decision had to be made whether to knock the place down, or to spend way too much money remodeling. Given the architectural features like the slot window out front, million-dollar wood ceiling and original copper fireplace, the choice to remodel was made. Kirk Development Co. completely remodeled the home from 1999-2004.
The copper fireplace, believe it or not, is completely original.
The beautiful Thunderbird with perfectly matching color scheme and angles was on loan from Lambda Car Club for the day.
The Pig Development Unit on the Stotfold - Hitchin road had been operating under that title for a year since opening in 1985. Before that since 1956 it was the Progeny Testing Station.
The purpose of the Pig Development Unit was to discover the best way of rearing pigs to obtain the best quality meat comparable to the cost of producing it. When the pigs had been in the unit for 19 weeks they were slaughtered.

China's engagement with matters of peace and security in Africa has recently become more prominent. This can be seen in peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict mediation, or the measures adopted at the 6th Forum for China-Africa Cooperation summit in December 2015 to strengthen cooperation on peace and security. These underlined how important these are to China's evolving policy engagement with the African continent, including how security relates to development. These panels will bring together leading academic and policy experts from China and Europe to discuss key themes and issues about China's engagement with peace and security in Africa.

All from the same floret, the ones near the bottom mature faster than those at the top of the spike. Earliest development only show the anthers (central floret has fully developed anthers), later florets (to the right) show well developed stigma. The last one on the right has three stigma, which I think is more unusual.
