The 2018 Think development - Think WIDER conference, held on 13-15 September in Helsinki, Finland, showcased UNU-WIDER, its work, and the many people and institutions that are engaged with it.
The conference held panel discussions on all of the main themes and findings of UNU-WIDER’s research during 2009-18 — finance, food and climate change; and transformation, inclusion and sustainability.
The event aimed to mobilize evidence and action around the 2030 SDG agenda and its goals.
WIDER Development Conference – held on 5-6 July 2017 in Maputo, Mozambique – focuses on the lessons from modern public and development economics which can guide policy makers to reform tax and public provision systems.
This public fórum, held on 23 April 2018 in Maputo, shared the results of the report on the business landscape for Mozambican manufacturing firms.
The event shed light on the current challenges faced by micro-, small- and medium-sized firms in the country’s manufacturing sector — and how policy can tackle these issues to allow firms to thrive. Special attention was paid to the business environment in which these enterprises operate.
I arrived here seven years ago when I cleared a piece of land that was free. In that time, there was no light or electricity, nor roads and steps and so on. It was really difficult to live in these circumstances and when it used to rain it was so much worse because mobility was nearly impossible.
My three cousins and I arrived at the same time in this community and we decided to work together as a collective because we realised that we could progress so much faster. We worked really hard for a long time as equals and nobody had more or less responsibility than the others.
Clearing the land and building a house took us a month, so within four months we had our four houses built, thanks to the help of our family and the neighbours.
When we saw the results from this union of our community, we decided to start an institution called 'Club CEPROMU NUEVA ESPERANZA', and with this new institution we started to work in different areas that benefit our development as a community. These include sport and education.
Now, seven years later, you can really see all the things we have changed in our community because now we are united and we stand together and in that way we have managed to get basic services with very little help from the government and NGOs. I think that in the future, things can only get better if we keep working with the same dedication, strength and solidarity as we have done so far.

Space is available for environmental and international start-ups looking for unique office space, and business and financial services and assistance. This program of space and services is offered under a 15-year long partnership between the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, the San Jose State University Research Foundation, and the Humboldt State University Sponsored Programs Foundation.
The Agency has invested more than $20 million in these programs to support the growth of new software, clean tech and emerging technology companies, as well as international businesses looking to expand in the U.S. Along with the incubator and business service programs at the San Jose Innovation Center, the Agency’s investment also includes the San Jose BioCenter, which is located in the Edenvale Technology Park, South San Jose.
