Human capital has been identified not only as a key determinant of growth and poverty alleviation, but as critical for human development. The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and now the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), have further highlighted the importance of health and education as crucial welfare improving mechanisms.

The aim of this conference is to contribute to a better understanding of these topics by shedding light on the interactions of human capital accumulation and growth, both at micro and macro levels. With that objective, the conference will bring together about 100-150 academics and researchers from all over the world and provide a forum to discuss innovative, theoretical, and empirical research. The conference will consist of plenary sessions with keynote speakers, parallel sessions with contributed papers, and a poster session.

A historic office building in Downtown San Jose is the home to entrepreneurs and startups affiliated with the Environmental Business Cluster (EBC), the US Market Access Center (USMAC), and the Entrepreneur Center (eCenter). Space is available for environmental and international start-ups looking for unique office space, and business and financial services and assistance. This program of space and services is offered under a 15-year long partnership between the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, the San Jose State University Research Foundation, and the Humboldt State University Sponsored Programs Foundation.

The Agency has invested more than $20 million in these programs to support the growth of new software, clean tech and emerging technology companies, as well as international businesses looking to expand in the U.S. Along with the incubator and business service programs at the San Jose Innovation Center, the Agency’s investment also includes the San Jose BioCenter, which is located in the Edenvale Technology Park, South San Jose. These programs have been very effective in helping small businesses grow by generating over 2,600 jobs and enabling companies affiliated with the programs to raise $1.6 billion in capital equity financing.

Originally revealed in 2021 and made up of three distinct areas centered on the intersection of N. LaSalle Street and W. North Avenue, developer Fern Hill has offered updated plans. Fern Hill has tapped architect David Adjaye and local firm GREC Architects to work on its design, though those plans have yet to be made public.

The vacant parking lot at 140 W. North Ave., directly east of the Stanley Tigerman-designed Walgreens that originally would have been demolished, will receive the majority of the development’s construction. Being the only space without much historical context, the developers plan on consolidating all the surrounding unused air rights for this site in order to build a singular larger tower.

NOTE: Updated details have been revealed once again for Old Town Canvas at 1610 N LaSalle Dr. The proposal has been in the works for nearly three years; The structure is being developed by Fern Hill with design-firm GREC Architects. The tower will replace the existing Walgreens and adjacent parking lot. The original proposal included a blue-toned façade, which has been replaced by a brown-tone gradient along with a brick podium that will reutilize the ornate lamps from the old Walgreens. After multiple complaints from surrounding neighbors on sightlines, mainly coming from one adjacent tower with a similar height, the proposal has kept the unit count at 500 while the tower has grown from 36 to 44 stories and from 395 to 480 feet in height, The ground floor will eventually feature a relocated Walgreens, along with an additional retail space. The adjacent Treasure Island building will be redeveloped to temporarily hold the Walgreens and a market.
