As we move into 2009, we can look back on 20 years of communication development. Back then we were so pleased that the telefax had been invented and even happier when an automatic telephone/fax switch became available. Then we started using the computer for receiving telefax, and we needed a modem for that. But suddenly people demanded documents by e-mail! What was that? We found out what it was and joined up, but the 33.6 kb/sec 'fax' modem could not cope so we bought a 56 kb/sec modem Wow! What a speed! - or so we thought then. As the years went by, DSL came - initially with 512 kbit/sec in 2004 and two years later we upgraded to a 1024 kbit/sec connection. Another two years went by and with yet another new modem we were at 2048 kbit/s, and last year we upgraded to 4 Mbit/sec. Yesterday we changed ISP and installed a new modem again - 8 Mbit/sec, which is apparently all our 50 year-old "tied-together-with-knots" telephone lines can support.
From the rear: c. 1990 - Tel/fax switch; 1991 - 33.6 Kbit/s fax modem; 1995 - 56 kbit/s; 2004 - 512 kbit/s to 2 Mbit/s DSL; 2007 - 4 Mbit/s DSL modem - all going for recycling.

The Women Development Centre (East Africa) Ltd (WODEC) is a women-led social enterprise company in Eldoret, Kenya, which has firmly positioned itself to engage in the development of quality sustainable feminine hygiene available to all. We have the dedication to address Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), in urban areas and slums. Why? Because MHM is as an issue that has been identified by disadvantaged women and girls as a driver of gender inequality and disempowerment in slum areas. We plans to develop a replicable and evidence-based model for delivering re-usable sanitary pads and education to marginalized girls in western Kenya.
With the grant from Pollination project, we plan to produce quality reusable menstrual kits available for purchase at a subsidized price. These kits will last for 12 months with proper care. Kits include 2 shields, 8 liners, 1 plastic bag, and 1 drawstring backpack for 400 Kenya Shillings per kit, which translates to about $4.00 USD.
Our idea is unique in terms of our low-cost mini sanitary pads making machine compared to the traditional production model which requires millions of dollars, yet the quality is the same.
In this enterprise, WODEC will partner with local organizations to train women in producing and distributing soap and menstrual hygiene kits. The innovative design of the kits uses locally sourced materials that can last for up to three years, can be washed with little water, and fold out to look like handkerchiefs when drying.
After training, members of the partner organizations become ambassadors for women’s health and hygiene services, providing both products and vital health knowledge at the community level

Native to South and Southeast Asia, it has successfully adapted to urban environments and is commonly seen in gardens, parks, and open fields. Known for its soft, mournful cooing, the Spotted Dove feeds primarily on seeds and grains and often forages in small groups, making it a familiar sight in many parts of the world.
