1835AD, 17th October, Galapagos, Darwin is picked up from the Galapagos island.

 

Having spent 5 weeks in the Galapagos islands Darwin brings back on board a reasonable sized haul of plants, animals, rocks and insects. From here Captain FitzRoyreturns HMS Beagle to Albermarle Island and spends the night sailing along the coast. At this time the currents were week and so HMS Beagle sailed on to Wenman and Culpepper Islands. On the evening of the 20th October strong winds develope and so the crew raise the sails and set course for the Island of Tahiti, 3,200 miles.

Used to be a dirty but busy port where all ships had to sail pass to reach the shop houses at Boat Quay and clarke quay for business trade, Singapore river is now clean and well develope into a tourist attraction plus financial district after 1970. But some of the old structures are still remain like the cavanagh bridge and the shop houses were evolved into restaurant, pub and bars to attract visitors.

Les plaques cobertes amb co•lodió (i anteriorment albuminades, part essencial del procés) es preparen com per a una placa humida usual. En el moment de treure-les del bany de plata, comença la diversió. Cal rentar la placa, sota llum roja, en dues safates d'aigua destilada, i seguidament, submerir-la en una sol•lució d'aigua, taní i etanol. Son uns 10 minutes per placa, en total. Un cop feta la exposició, encara més important el revelat també és per inmersió. Primer s’humidifica la placa seca amb aigua i etanol, i després es submergeix 5 minuts en una solució d’acid pirogalic i citric, amb unes gotes de nitrat de plata. Amb això s’inicia el revelat, però cal afegir més nitrat de plata passats els cinc minuts i usualment fins als 10-12 minuts.

 

Les plaques de col•lodió sec son força desconegudes però es varen fer servir en paral•lel al més famós col•lodió humit. Eren molt pràctiques per eliminar la necessitat de portar a sobre tots els quimics i una cambra fosca portatil, però com les exposicions son molt llargues, de diversos minuts com a mínim, en queden exclosos els retrats. Aquest tipus de procediment en concret, conegut com a mètode Russell, data de 1861.

The dry collodion is a quite convenient "evolution" from the wet collodion, as it allows to go out there without any box of chemicals and a dark box following you. But it never gained more popularity due to it's own problems, like even more complex manipulations and specially much less sensibility, with expositions in the minutes range, limiting it to landscape photography. This method, discovered by Major Russell in 1861, uses tannin to preserve the sensitivity of the plates once dry.

 

Glass plates covered with collodion (and previously albuminized, an essential part of the process) are prepared as for a usual wet plate. The moment you take them out of the silver bath, the fun begins. The plate must be washed, under red light, in two trays of distilled water, and then immersed in a solution of water, tannin and ethanol. It's about 10 minutes per plate, in total

 

Once the exposure is made, even more important is to develope also by immersion. First, the dry plate is moistened with water and ethanol, and then immersed for 5 minutes in a solution of pyrogallic and citric acid, with a few drops of silver nitrate. This starts the development, but it is necessary to add more silver nitrate after five minutes and usually up to 10-12 minutes.

La tècnica coneguda com a "C41 bleach bypass" és la que utilitzà Spielberg a "Salvar al soldat Ryan", així com a la serie "Germans de Sang", i altres. Permet donar a la pel·licula en color un aire més apagat, com de record i de antiguitat alhora.

 

De fet, és molt bàsica, consisteix en fer el procés de revelat C41, el normal per a pel·licula en color (jo faig servir el kit casolà de Tetenal). Però un cop fet el revelat, s'esquiva el "bleach" i es va directament al fixador. Amb el kit de Tetenal el bleach està combinat amb el fixador ("blix") pel que directament revelo amb C41 i després passo a fixar amb Ilford Rapid Fixer com si fos pel·licula en blanc i negre.

 

Tot plegat el que fà es deixar la plata en el negatiu, incrementant el gra i afeblint els colors. El procés C41 normal primer converteix els halurs de plata en plata i això fa que s'activin els colorants; posteriorment el bleach reconverteix la plata en halurs de plata i el fixador disol els halurs de plata, deixant només els colorants al negatiu.

 

En aquest cas, és una foto del Hotel Suiss a Sabadell, amb Kodacolor 200 nou, i una càmera Ihagee Exakta.

 

El C41 bleach bypass em sembla molt interessant per revelar pel·licula en color caducada fa decades. Els colorants son la part més delicada de negatiu en color; si han caducat, no funcionaran, però la plata si que serà revelada. Però si aleshores el passes pel "bleach", la plata es dissoldrà en el fixador i no quedarà res. Pertant crec que és la manera més segura de revelar negatius antics en color, mantenint bona part del color i amb la seguretat que alguna cosa en sortirà.

The technique known as the "C41 bleach bypass" is the one Spielberg used in "Save Private Ryan," as well as in the "Band of Brothers" series, and others. It allows to give to the film in color a more muted atmosphere, like of memory and vintage at the same time.

 

In fact, it is very basic, it consists of doing the C41 developing process, the normal one for color film (I use Tetenal's homemade kit). But once the developer is done, you bypass the bleach and goes straight to the fixer. With the Tetenal kit the bleach is combined with the fixer ("blix") so I directly develop with C41 as usual, and then move on to fix with Ilford Rapid Fixer as if it were black and white film.

 

All it does is leave the silver in the negative, increasing the grain and muting the colors. The normal C41 process first converts silver halides to silver and this causes the dyes to be activated; subsequently the bleach converts the silver into silver halides again and the fix dissolves the silver halides, leaving only the dyes in the negative. So the techinque is also known as "silver retention".

 

In this case, it is a photo of the Hotel Suiss in Sabadell (Catalonia), with new Kodacolor 200 film, and an Ihagee Exakta camera.

 

The C41 bleach bypass I find very interesting to safely develope color film expired decades ago; only for C41 film, obviously, not E6 nor K14 etc. Dyes are the most delicate part of color negative; if they have expired, they will not work, even the silver image will be developed. But if you then pass it through the "bleach", the silver will dissolve in the fixer and nothing will be left. With the bleach bypass the silver remains, even if there are color dyes still present or not. So I think it’s the safest way to develop old negatives in color, keeping much of the color and with the certainty that something will come out of it.

Mentre anava fent proves de plaques seques de col•lodió, vaig trobar un nou video de Borut Peterlin mostrant aquest procediment, però amb variacions. Vaig adaptar-les al meu sistema de treball i ara les plaques son molt més netes i homogenies.

While testing collodion dry plates, I found a new video by Borut Peterlin showing this procedure, but with variations. I adapted them to my work system and now the plates are much cleaner and homogeneous.

No pude resistirme a fotografiar este auto. Me gusta de siempre. La foto la tomé en Utrecht, de la que subiré un par de fotos según vaya teniendo tiempo.

 

El Volkswagen Sedán, denominado también Volkswagen Tipo 1, es un automóvil de bajo costo producido por el fabricante alemán Volkswagen entre los años 1938 y 2003, exceptuando la época de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Fue el primer automóvil de la marca, y se construyeron 21 millones de unidades, superando al Ford T como el modelo único más vendido en la historia (modelos como el Volkswagen Golf y Toyota Corolla abarcan varias generaciones).

 

Aunque inicialmente se llamó "Volkswagen Sedán" o "Volkswagen Tipo 1", recibió numerosos apodos que luego fueron adoptados por Volkswagen en su publicidad y nomenclatura: Escarabajo en Argentina, Perú, Venezuela, Chile, España, El Salvador,Colombia y Paraguay, Vocho en México y algunos países de Centro América, Cucaracha en Guatemala y Honduras, Poncho en Panamá, Pichirilo en Ecuador, Fusca en Brasil y Uruguay, Käfer en Alemania, Coccinelle en Francia, Volky en Puerto Rico, Maggiolino en Italia, Cepillo en República Dominicana, Peta en Bolivia, Garbus en Polonia (jorobado), y Beetle o Bug en los países angloparlantes.

 

Adolf Hitler, por entonces canciller de Alemania, ideó una red de autopistas diseñadas para unir a todo el país por carretera rápidamente (después el sistema se extendería hasta Suiza y Austria). En principio se pensó que la velocidad máxima debía ser de 160 km/h, aunque finalmente se optó por que fuera ilimitada. Esta red, que se llamaría Autobahn, estaría compuesta por calzadas de tres carriles a cada sentido, con una anchura mínima de unos 2,5 metros cada carril; 60 centímetros de cemento bajo la capa de asfalto; curvas bien peraltadas; barreras a ambos lados de la calzada, y un larguísimo etcétera. Pero se encontró con el inconveniente de que la mayoría de la población germana carecía de automóvil. El nombre que se adoptaría en principio para el modelo sería KdF-Wagen, que significa algo así como "A la fuerza por la alegría", o Fuerza por medio de la alegría.

The Volkswagen Type 1 is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. The car was originally known as Käfer, the German word for "beetle," from which the popular English nickname originates. It was not until August 1967 that the Volkswagen corporation itself began using the name Beetle in marketing materials in the US.

 

In Britain, VW never used the name Beetle officially.
