"When Cardinals Appear - Four" by Patti Deters. Four male Northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are seen perching on the branch of a birch tree, clustered together as if in a meeting or at a party. These bright red songbirds are popular with beginning birders as they are easy to spot and easy to identify. This little flock of quadruplets was seen near a winter birdfeeder in Minnesota, where they are generally the first birds to arrive every morning.

The popular saying "when cardinals appear, angels are near" is credited to an untitled poem by American poet, Victoria McGovern (a verse is shown below). In history, the first reference to cardinals and the afterlife has been found in Native American cultures. Today, many people like to believe that when they see a cardinal, it means a loved one from heaven is sending them a cheerful hello. Another version of this sentiment is "When Cardinals appear, loved ones are near", as is depicted in this artwork.

UNTITLED

May you come to find comfort in and remember,

Cardinals appear when angels are near.

So go now, sit outside and drink your tea.

Keep a look out for the little red bird,

It is there your loved ones will be.

"White Willow in a Snow Storm" by Patti Deters. A large willow tree almost disappears from view as it is being covered in snow during a winter storm. Winter landscapes are so pretty to look at and peaceful to experience - if it's not too cold and stormy outside. This white on white scene includes a small pond surrounded by trees.

"Pink Malva Flower Texture" by Patti Deters. This pretty pink Malva flower in full bloom is isolated against a vertical textured background which turns it into an artwork. Malva are also knows as Mallow which means soft or mellow. These summer blooming wildflowers are perennials and are tall plants that self-seed readily. They bloom a long time as you can see from the new buds that are forming even while there are other open blossoms flowering on the same stem. Identification words are included as pink text. "Sunset Surf - Flamingo Silhouette" by Patti Deters. A single flamingo in silhouette flies along a beach at sunset. The orange yellow sunset and scenic ocean surf make this a peaceful summer waterscape scene. There is a bit of blur in the waves from the long exposure which create a dreamy feel to this nature artwork. This could also be a sunrise, morning or evening, dusk or dawn. "California Scrub Jay" by Patti Deters. The California scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica), is a species native to western North America, ranging from southern British Columbia throughout California west of the Sierra Nevada. The California scrub jay was once grouped with the island scrub jay, Woodhouse's scrub jay, and Florida scrub jay but is now separate. This pretty bird can become tame and will eat at birdfeeders. "Red Fox - Perfect Portrait" by Patti Deters. This American Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes fulvous) was looking directly at the camera for several minutes, not overly concerned with me being in her space. She was sitting close in the grass of the neighbor's lawn looking towards the camera long enough for me to take this portrait photo. It was almost like she was saying “hello”. These canines look a bit like a dog with their long nose and pointy ears, and this one has pretty rust-colored fur and big bushy tail. The white tip on the large tail is part of what helps identify it as an American Red Fox. "Venice Beach - Gulls on the Water" by Patti Deters. A flock of gulls flies low over the calm ocean waters in an early morning sunrise, while the waves are gentle and the weather is still cool. This scenic waterscape is from the town of Venice which is on the east coast of Florida, roughly halfway between Tampa and Fort Myers on the Gulf of Mexico. Venice Beach is a white sandy beach and a popular warm weather destination. The sky is still at dawn and it just starting to glow with sun about to peak over the horizon. I've applied a couple of light textures for artistic effect. "Great White Egret Feathers Triptych" by Patti Deters. Great White Egrets (Ardea alba egretta) grow fantastic plumage and display bright neon green eye color during spring courtship, mating, and nesting season. The long, thin, and feathery breeding plumage are called aigrettes which grows from the back, and part of the skin on its face turns bright green which give these birds a beautiful fairy tale look. It’s the aigrettes that almost caused these water birds to become extinct in the late nineteenth century because they were hunted for fashion hat decorations - which in turn sparked conservation efforts and some early laws to protect these wild avian waterfowl, also known as white herons or American herons. This showy and beautiful white bird was photographed in Fergus Falls, Minnesota on a very windy day! Each image in this triptych is also available individually by going to the links below. Tagetes is a genus of annual or perennial, mostly herbaceous plants in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The genus is native of south of México, but some species have become naturalized around the world. The common name in English, marigold, is derived from Mary's gold, a name first applied to a similar plant native to Europe, Calendula officinalis. The most commonly cultivated varieties of Tagetes are known variously as African marigolds or French marigolds, many of which were developed in France. Depending on the species, marigold foliage has a musky, pungent scent, though some varieties have been bred to be scentless. It is said to deter some common insect pests, as well as nematodes. Tagetes species are hence often used in companion planting for tomato, eggplant, chili pepper, tobacco, and potato. 10656

"Fox Family Play Time" by Patti Deters. This family of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) mother and her two young kits played together for several hours on a summer morning in a field near Hastings, Minnesota. The mom was patient and tender, and seemed to have fun right along with the pups. Red fox are one of the more common species of fox and is easily identified by the reddish tint to the fur, black legs and black ears, and long bushy tail with a white tip. The muzzle (snout or nose) is elongated with white fur underneath in the neck area and they have pointy ears tinged in black. A baby fox is called a kit and they are miniature versions of the adults, a little paler in color but with an extra dose of cuteness! "White Egrets Greeting" by Patti Deters. These two white birds are Great Egrets (Ardea alba) and were flying around looking for a suitable nest location. They would "greet" each other as they passed, perhaps the one asking if the yellow flowers might make a good place for the nest. You can tell it is breeding season by the green coloring near their eyes and the beginning of long plumage tail feathers. The birds were photographed in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and a several heavy textures have been added to remove background distractions. "Maui Beach Surf Sunset" by Patti Deters. A beautiful brilliant sunset just off camera left sheds golden orange evening light over Maui Beach, one of the islands of Hawaii. "Ice Covered Stems with Falling Snow" by Patti Deters. These weeds are encased in solid ice from an overnight ice storm. The grassy weed stems can barely hold up to the added weight of the ice as you can see from the thinner ends where they start to bend down. This beautiful winter (although sometimes early spring or late autumn) phenomenon is known as ice glaze and can actually be dangerous if too much ice and weight accumulate. But when it occurs, it's as if the world turned into a fairytale crystal ice palace, especially when seen in the falling snow against a blue sky. "Sunset Blur - Pelican Silhouettes" by Patti Deters. This beautiful waterscape sky with the ocean surf rolling in gentle waves onto the sandy shore was seen in the town of Cayucos, California. The flock of white pelicans appear as silhouettes as they fly into the sunset. This is very peaceful, yet bright and colorful. Tropical summer weather doesn't get any better than this! Please enjoy more of my (scenic, landscape, nature, birds, more) images at patti-deters.pixels.com/featured/sunset-blur-pelican-silh...

"Striped Squill with Texture - Vertical" by Patti Deters. This vertical artwork is of a small spring blooming flower called Scilla or Squill (Scilla Tubergeniana). Scilla are ephemerals and are some of the earliest blooming wildflowers in Minnesota. This variety is praised for a fresh and delightful fragrance, though at 6 inches tall you have to get really low to the ground o appreciate it! When blooming, the bright white petals with sky blue stripes are a stand out in the garden. They naturalize (spread) in nature so after planting only a few bulbs, you will soon have more. In this art piece, I've isolated one single flower stalk and surrounded it with a blend of soft pastel textures. "Pure White Bloodroot Bloom" by Patti Deters. These small but impactful Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) blossoms are one of the first perennial flowers to bloom in the spring in my Minnesota garden (Zone 4). This little woodland ephemeral is also known as Canada puccoon, bloodwort, redroot, red puccoon, pauson, coon root, and tetterwort. Native Americans used bloodroot and it is supposed to provide some antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory relief - as well as using the crushed roots to create a red dye. Bloodroot's pure white petals and bright golden center stamens help these plants really stand among the woodland leaf litter when they start to bloom. This photo has a vertical orientation. "Bearded Iris - Gnuz Spread" by Patti Deters. This is a painterly photograph of a lovely purple, lavender and creamy white miniature tall bearded iris. A beautiful spring blooming flower. "Glacier at Lake Louise and Mount Victoria " by Patti Deters. This vertical photograph of Lake Louise and Victoria Glacier is popular with tourists to the Canadian Rockies, known as Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The hills and mountains of Mount Victoria are covered with pine tree forests and the snow packed glacier fills part of the valley between mountains, as can be seen here in this majestic waterscape. The water is turquoise aquamarine and is caused by the glacial melt that trickles into the lake. Even with gray cloudy skies, this summer viewpoint is beautiful and is taken from the end of a small inlet of shallow water with rocky a shoreline and you can see lake water is ultra clear. "Yellow Peony on Black Square" by Patti Deters. A close-up (macro) of a bright yellow peony (Paeonia 'Golden Bowl') in full bloom. This one has a red center. Hardy in northern gardens, these large flowering perennials are definite show-offs in the spring garden. This romantic bloom has been isolated and placed on a black square background for dramatic effect. "Fox Fun 09 - Morning Kiss" by Patti Deters. A female red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and her pup (kit) play together on the lawn one early morning. The little juvenile, really still just a baby, frequently rubs nuzzles with mom in what seems to be gentle kisses. They spent quite a bit of time together in the green lawn grass by a gravel path. Their red fur looks golden orange in the morning light and is offset by black ears and black legs. This photograph is presented with a square crop. "Yellow Parrot Tulip Flower" by Patti Deters.

This bright and cheerful yellow Parrot Tulip blossom is one of the last of the spring bulbs to bloom in my Minnesota garden. It is one of several varieties of parrot tulips and also one of the prettiest with its pointy petals. Presented here with a soft green background and plenty of copy space. "Pretty Pink Sunrise Reflection" by Patti Deters. A beautiful sunrise near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota peeking over a rolling cloud bank creating lovely reflections in the very still lake water - not a ripple to be seen. In the summer months ladybirds give off a faint scent, which is thought to deter potential predators. In the winter this 'ladybird perfume' could be one of the ways they find each other at hibernation sites. Ladybirds hibernate through the winter as adult insects, so this is the time when they start looking for suitable sites. Different species will usually hibernate in different places. Some shelter under tree bark, others sleep under leaf litter etc.

Ladybirds-fly-74-miles-one-Research-shows-insects-travel-fast-racehorse-fly-height-3-600ft.

Up until now, scientists believed that anything over seven foot was a long-distance flight for a ladybird - but the new data shows they can actually travel up to 74 miles in a single flight.

The study of the common or garden ladybird was undertaken using a monitoring device at Rothamsted Research, an agricultural research institution based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Earlier this month I had the great fortune of reaching the top of Mt. Rainier for the fifth time. This trip was extra special for a several reasons. First, our friends Mike and Kayleen flew out from Maryland. For the past ten years they dreamed of one day standing on Rainier's summit. Helping them reach the top was a definite highlight of the summer. Second, we had the route to ourselves. Crap weather, fog, drizzle, snow, detered other parties from making the trip up to Campo Schurman. It was sweet waking up at 12:15 am, unzipping the tent door, and seeing stars above and clouds below. Lastly, the sunrise was the best I'd seen from Rainier. Unfortunately, I kept my camera in my pack, missing much of the best color (I'm still experiencing a bit of PTSD after watching a camera bag full of equipment roll into a crevase on Baker eight years ago.). In this shot, Kayleen and Mike are taking a well earned break somewhere around the 12,500 foot level.

"Sea Nettle Jellyfish - Bright Orange" by Patti Deters. This neon orange Sea Nettle Jellyfish (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) floats downward and swims in royal blue aquarium water. See those long wispy tentacles? They fire thousands of tiny stinging cells that paralyze prey, then the jelly transfers its catch to those frilly mouth-arms and finally to its mouth, where the jelly eats it meal. How cool is that?! This underwater marine photograph is presented with a few extra water sparkles added for artistic effect. "Bird of Paradise on Black" by Patti Deters. Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) flowers are spectacular when in full bloom. These plants are native to South Africa and thrive in most tropical and sub-tropical regions. The ornamental bloom resembles a brightly colored bird, hence its common name of crane flower. Flowers consist of 3 sepals and 3 petals. In this photograph, the pink and white bottom bract forms a spathe from which the flowers emerge. To see the "bird", you can imagine the stem is the beak and the pointy end of the spathe is the tailfeathers. The orange and blue petals are the wings. Pareidolia is the term for when you see unrelated images or shapes in nature. This photograph is presented with a black background. If you like this floral artwork, please see more nature, flora, and botanical artwork at patti-deters.pixels.com/featured/bird-of-paradise-on-blac....

Thank you for the feature of my "Brown Pelican Portrait Art" by Patti Deters. A pretty portrait of a Brown Pelican, a large gray-brown with a red orange bill (beak), rarely seen on inland waters. These birds have a six to eight foot wingspan, and are usually seen with their neck folded back, unlike this portrait, where the neck is straight up and the beak down. Brown Pelican's were in decline in the early to mid 1900's, but are now more common and can be found along the Gulf, Atlantic, and Pacific shores along with other coastal wildlife. Colorful watercolor background added for artistic effect. This particular image is for sale on a variety of products at patti-deters.pixels.com/featured/brown-pelican-portrait-a... "Pretty Garden Hibiscus" by Patti Deters. The blooms of the Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) flower are huge and vibrant, and attract a lot of attention in the summer garden. While many hibiscus are annuals in Minnesota, this one is a perennial in that it comes back every year. They come in many colors but this bright pink magenta is one of my favorites. "Winter at the Lake" by Patti Deters. We had a heavy snow overnight which covered trees and fence posts with several inches of beautiful white snow. Typical spring day, but it didn't deter the adders. It was the coldest day I recall seeing any adders, 2 degrees but add to that the freezing wind chill and it felt more -2. There had been some sunshine earlier in the day and there were prolonged sunny spells after this mini blizzard. I can only presume they'd use more energy going in and out to shelter each time it snowed than they do by simply coiling up and hunkering down waiting for the next break in the clouds. 20 males seen but only 3 had sloughed. Lots of movement away from hibernation sites now. Hoping this video doesn't have some strange psychedelic filter added to it which seems to happen whenever I try to put any videos in Flickr? (it appears to have happened again, strange purple and green colouring. Anyone have any ideas how to rectify this, or does it appear normal on your screens?)

"Baby Fox in Baby Flowers" by Patti Deters. A young red fox (Vulpes vulpes Linn) lays down for a rest in a field of bright yellow baby flowers, or oxeye sunflowers (Heliopsis helianthoides). The cute little kit is snuggled up and is keeping her eyes on some other wildflowers blowing in the breeze, just off camera, with her ears perked up showing intense concentration. Red fox are one of the most recognized mammals around the world because of their distinctive red-orange fur, pointy ears, and bushy tail. A full grown fox might weigh up to 30 pounds and lives for only about 2-5 years. This one is probably about 5-6 weeks old. A light linen texture has been applied to the photograph to create a painterly effect. "Nesting Pelican - Texture" by Patti Deters. This Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is sitting on her nest in a swampy marshy wetland. The male is the one to select the site of the nest, then the female does the building while the male gathers progressively smaller sticks for her. She moves and pushes sticks with her bill to form a comfortable nest cup. The male brings new material for the female to add throughout incubation and may even rearrange the nest. Pelican nests can measure up to 30 inches across. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the young. This ground nest appears to be a simple depressions lined with grass. A light canvas texture overlay has been applied for artistic interest. "Goslings - Ouch! Texture!" by Patti Deters. Two little baby geese play in the grass and one of them reaches out and appears to take a bit of the other, who reacts with an open beak and look of surprise, or perhaps pain. These spring goslings were cute to watch as they ran around for the longest time nipping and chasing each other. A light texture with the hint of a frame has been applied for artistic effect. A texture background has been applied to minimize distractions and add of bit of drama to the image. 1. Bison are the largest mammal in North America. Male bison (called bulls) weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall, while females (called cows) weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 feet. Bison calves weigh 30–70 pounds at birth.

2. Since the late 19th century, [the Department of the] Interior has been the primary national conservation steward of the bison. Public lands managed by Interior support 17 bison herds—or approximately 10,000 bison—in 12 states, including Alaska.

3. What’s the difference between bison and buffalo? While bison and buffalo are used interchangeably, in North America the scientific name is bison. Actually, it's Bison bison bison (genus: Bison, species: bison, subspecies: bison), but only saying it once is fine. Historians believe that the term "buffalo" grew from the French word for beef, "boeuf".

4.Yellowstone National Park is the only place in the U.S. where bison have continuously lived since prehistoric times. What makes these bison so special is that they're the pure descendants (free of cattle genes) of early bison that roamed our country's grasslands. As of July 2015, Yellowstone's bison population was estimated at 4,900—making it the largest bison population on public lands.

5. What's a "red dog"? It's a baby bison. Bison calves tend to be born from late March through May and are orange-red in color, earning them the nickname "red dogs." After a few months, their hair starts to change to dark brown and their characteristic shoulder hump and horns begin to grow.

6. The history of bison and Native Americans are intertwined. Bison have been integral to tribal culture, providing them with food, clothing, fuel, tools, shelter and spiritual value. Established in 1992, the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council works with the National Park Service to transfer bison from national park lands to tribal lands.

7. You can judge a bison's mood by its tail. When it hangs down and switches naturally, the bison is usually calm. If the tail is standing straight up, watch out! It may be ready to charge. No matter what a bison's tail is doing, remember that they are unpredictable and can charge at any moment.

8. Wind Cave National Park's herd helped revive bison populations around the country. The story starts in 1905 with the formation of the American Bison Society and a breeding program at the New York City Zoo (today, the Bronx Zoo). By 1913, the American Bison Society had enough bison to restore a free-ranging bison herd. Working with Interior, they donated 14 bison to Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota. More than 100 years later, the bison from Wind Cave have helped reestablishing other herds across the United States and most recently in Mexico.

9. Bison may be big, but they're also fast. They can run up to 35 miles per hour. Plus, they're extremely agile. Bison can spin around quickly, jump high fences and are strong swimmers.

10. Pass the salad, please...bison primarily eat grasses, weeds and leafy plants—typically foraging for 9–11 hours a day. That's where the bison's large protruding shoulder hump comes in handy during the winter. It allows them to swing their heads from side-to-side to clear snow—especially for creating foraging patches.

11. From hunter to conservationist, Teddy Roosevelt helped save bison from extinction. In 1883, Teddy Roosevelt traveled to the Dakota Territory to hunt bison. After a few years in the west, Roosevelt returned to New York with a new outlook. Starting the conservation movement in 1905, he formed the American Bison Society with William Hornaday to save the disappearing bison. Today bison live in all 50 states, including Native American lands, wildlife refuges, national parks and private lands.

12. Bison can live up to 20 years old. The average lifespan for a bison is 10–20 years, but some live to be older.

13. A little dirt won't hurt...called wallowing, bison roll in the dirt to deter biting flies and help shed fur. Male bison also wallow during mating season to leave their scent and display their strength.

14. The American bison's ancestors can be traced to southern Asia thousands of years ago.

15. Bison are nearsighted—who knew? And, while bison have poor eyesight, they have excellent senses of smell and hearing to help offset the eyesight issue.

Zion National Park is an American national park located in southwestern Utah near the city of Springdale. A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile (590 km2) park is Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles (24 km) long and up to 2,640 ft (800 m) deep. The canyon walls are reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone eroded by the North Fork of the Virgin River. The lowest point in the park is 3,666 ft (1,117 m) at Coalpits Wash and the highest peak is 8,726 ft (2,660 m) at Horse Ranch Mountain. Located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert regions, the park has a unique geography and a variety of life zones that allow for unusual plant and animal diversity. Numerous plant species as well as 289 species of birds, 75 mammals (including 19 species of bat), and 32 reptiles inhabit the park's four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland, and coniferous forest. Zion National Park includes mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches. Human habitation of the area started about 8,000 years ago with small family groups of Native Americans, one of which was the semi-nomadic Basketmaker Anasazi (c. 300). Subsequently, the Virgin Anasazi culture (c. 500) and the Parowan Fremont group developed as the Basketmakers settled in permanent communities. Both groups moved away by 1300 and were replaced by the Parrusits and several other Southern Paiute subtribes. Mormons came into the area in 1858 and settled there in the early 1860s. In 1909, President William Howard Taft named the area Mukuntuweap National Monument in order to protect the canyon. In 1918, the acting director of the newly created National Park Service, Horace Albright, drafted a proposal to enlarge the existing monument and change the park's name to Zion National Monument, Zion being a term used by the Mormons. According to historian Hal Rothman: "The name change played to a prevalent bias of the time. Many believed that Spanish and Indian names would deter visitors who, if they could not pronounce the name of a place, might not bother to visit it. The new name, Zion, had greater appeal to an ethnocentric audience." On November 20, 1919, Congress redesignated the monument as Zion National Park, and the act was signed by President Woodrow Wilson. The Kolob section was proclaimed a separate Zion National Monument in 1937, but was incorporated into the national park in 1956. The geology of the Zion and Kolob canyons area includes nine formations that together represent 150 million years of mostly Mesozoic-aged sedimentation. At various periods in that time warm, shallow seas, streams, ponds and lakes, vast deserts, and dry near-shore environments covered the area. Uplift associated with the creation of the Colorado Plateau lifted the region 10,000 feet (3,000 m) starting 13 million years ago. The park is located in southwestern Utah in Washington, Iron and Kane counties. Geomorphically, it is located on the Markagunt and Kolob plateaus, at the intersection of three North American geographic provinces: the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert. The northern part of the park is known as the Kolob Canyons section and is accessible from Interstate 15, exit 40. The 8,726-foot (2,660 m) summit of Horse Ranch Mountain is the highest point in the park; the lowest point is the 3,666-foot (1,117 m) elevation of Coal Pits Wash, creating a relief of about 5,100 feet (1,600 m). Streams in the area take rectangular paths because they follow jointing planes in the rocks. The stream gradient of the Virgin River, whose North Fork flows through Zion Canyon in the park, ranges from 50 to 80 feet per mile (9.5 to 15.2 m/km) (0.9–1.5%)—one of the steepest stream gradients in North America. The road into Zion Canyon is 6 miles (9.7 km) long, ending at the Temple of Sinawava, which is named for the coyote god of the Paiute Indians. The canyon becomes more narrow near the Temple and a hiking trail continues to the mouth of The Narrows, a gorge only 20 feet (6 m) wide and up to 2,000 feet (610 m) tall. The Zion Canyon road is served by a free shuttle bus from early April to late October and by private vehicles the other months of the year. Other roads in Zion are open to private vehicles year-round. The east side of the park is served by Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (SR-9), which passes through the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel and ends at Mount Carmel. On the east side of the park, notable park features include Checkerboard Mesa and the East Temple. The Kolob Terrace area, northwest of Zion Canyon, features a slot canyon called The Subway, and a panoramic view of the entire area from Lava Point. The Kolob Canyons section, further to the northwest near Cedar City, features one of the world's longest natural arches, Kolob Arch. Other notable geographic features of the park include the Virgin River Narrows, Emerald Pools, Angels Landing, The Great White Throne, and Court of the Patriarchs. Spring weather is unpredictable, with stormy, wet days being common, mixed with occasional warm, sunny weather. Precipitation is normally heaviest in March. Spring wildflowers bloom from April through June, peaking in May. Fall days are usually clear and mild; nights are often cool. Summer days are hot (95 to 110 °F; 35 to 43 °C), but overnight lows are usually comfortable (65 to 70 °F; 18 to 21 °C). Afternoon thunderstorms are common from mid-July through mid-September. Storms may produce waterfalls as well as flash floods. Autumn tree-color displays begin in September in the high country; in Zion Canyon, autumn colors usually peak in late October. Winter in Zion Canyon is fairly mild. Winter storms bring rain or light snow to Zion Canyon and heavier snow to the higher elevations. Clear days may become quite warm, reaching 60 °F (16 °C); nights are often 20 to 40 °F (−7 to 4 °C). Winter storms can last several days and make roads icy. Zion roads are plowed, except the Kolob Terrace Road which is closed when covered with snow. Winter driving conditions last from November through March. "Black-Chinned Hummingbird" by Patti Deters. This tiny little hummer known as the Black-Chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) was spotted at the visitor center at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. These quick flying pollinators are not rare, though it was the first one I have seen, and the visitor staff were all very excited to have him visit. These tiny marvels generally inhabit the Western United States during breeding season, after which they may fly to higher ground for mountain meadow wildflowers. For winter, these hummingbirds migrate south to western Mexico. "Sunflower Opening I - Square" by Patti Deters. This is a cheerful photograph of a bright yellow sunflower not quite open all the way, though you can see how beautiful the flower will be once its in full bloom. Its been placed onto a weave texture background with a bit of yellow tone added. A few of the petals have yet to open and they still cover the seed head, almost like a person covering their mouth! Sunflowers bloom in the summer in Minnesota and there's nothing better than finding a field of these beautiful tall plants in full bloom. With a square crop, you can rotate the image however you like; and below in the product offerings, you can try out the different rotations to see how they look before placing your order.
