With the support of CitiPower Powercor, The Neighbourhood Justice Centre and City of Yarra, Juddy Roller transformed the Collingwood power substation at the corner of Easey Street and Wellington Street into one of the most iconic pieces of public art in the area.
The graffiti treatment was a collaboration between some of the most sought after and influential contemporary street artists including Rone, Adnate, Mayo, Guido Van Helton and Askew. The monochromatic artwork was carefully curated, balancing community aesthetic and implementing subtle graffiti deterring features.
Background and portraits by Askew, script by Mayo and photo realistic portraits by Rone, Guido and Adnate.
The power station is an example of how street art and graffiti aesthetics can be combined to create a lasting, positive impression on the community whilst having a strong anti graffiti impact.
This portrait is just a part of the overall artwork.
One Denver, Coloradao homeowner had a nearly perfect lawn...of Prickly Pear cacti.
It's fairly low maintenance, will deter some critters and gives a certain "feel" of a desert. So, no lawn cutting, but pulling weeds may be a little testy :-))
My little friend here needs to eat and so the snow was not going to deter him from having his breakfast here at the feeder on this winter storm day.
I want to thank each and everyone for your comments and visits to my little space here on Flickr. Although I may not get to respond to all the comments, rest assured, I appreciate them all more than you know however, awards and invites aren't necessary.

The wildlife wasn't deterred by blizzard conditions in Sheffield earlier. This Grey Squirrel was happy to take advantage of the peanuts I'd put out for the birds.
These milkweed flowers were hanging down. As a result, the sepals, with their stripes, are pointed up, and the petals are hanging down. This didn't deter the bumblebee. No sign of monarch butterflies, which need milkweed plants.
Thank you for looking. Isn't God a great artist?

The Elephant Hawk-moth's common name is derived from the caterpillar's resemblance to an elephant's trunk. This 8cm (3 inch) larva was found beside a potted fuchsia plant – one of its food plants. The eye-spots are to deter birds.
This was one of the darkest locations I shot, but I was not deterred as I love the scene of the two canals combining into one. For those familiar with Venice, this is very near to the famous Acqua Alta Library
The pole putting the bird feeding elements way above the ground was supposed to deter our furry friends from a sneaky bite of bread, but has failed to do so.
Roderick (as we've called him) is quite well behaved, and has missed out on a career in pole dancing.
One of the grand views taken near the summit of Beartooth Pass.
Travelers who cross this unique Pass enjoy the transition from a lush forest ecosystem to alpine tundra in the space of a few miles. At the highway’s summit, travelers find themselves in a sky-high world of glacial cirques, clear alpine lakes, and snow that lingers through the summer months. The brutal climate at this elevation deters the growth of trees and shrubs, and the plants that do grow here have adapted in remarkable ways. One of the most fascinating and beautiful drives I've experienced.
Inside a tower of the fort of Frangokastello in Crete (Greece).
The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-74 as a garrison to impose order on the rebellious Sfakia region, to deter pirates, and to protect Venetian nobles and their properties. The Venetians named it the Castle of St. Nikitas after the nearby church. The locals, however, who never saw it in a positive light, contemptuously dubbed it Frangokastello, meaning the Castle of the Franks (i.e. Catholic foreigners), Castelfranco or Franco Castello.
On 17 May 1828 a celebrated battle was fought at Frangokastello. Hundreds of Sfakiots and Epirotes led by Hatzimichalis Dalianis, a Greek patriot from Epirus attempting to spread the Greek War of Independence from the mainland to Crete, occupied the castle, but were besieged by the Turks and massacred. However, many of the Turks were then themselves killed by rebel ambushes launched from the local gorges. According to tradition, around the anniversary of the battle each May, shadows of the armed Cretan and Epirote soldiers who lost their lives there seem to march towards the fortress around dawn. These are called Drosoulites (Greek: Δροσουλίτες), or dew-men, and have been explained as a meteorological phenomenon (from Wikipedia).
It is just another cold, blustery winter day in Alberta but Rosie will not be deterred by the weather. She is committed to sentry duty even while in the house, as the birds and squirrel feast on the feeders.
The front fence and garden has largely been cleared a new fence put up to deter people getting in at the back, but the big work of reducing it to a shell and then putting up another house on the fenced area is about to commence.
It sold in this condition in 2010 for £190,000 and 5 years later as a transformed home for £560,000. The new house sold for in excess of £400,000.

Eastern Amberwing Dragonfly
Perithemis tenera
In Explore
The eastern amberwing (Perithemis tenera) is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It is very small, reaching a total length of no more than 25 mm. The males have orange or amber wings. Both sexes have a red pterostigma. The eastern amberwing dragonfly is one of the only types of dragonfly that actively mimics a wasp. The yellow and brown stripes on its abdomen encourage predators to stay away. When perched, they will wiggle their abdomen and wings in a wasp-like fashion to deter other animals from eating it. Males have an elaborate courtship ritual. When a female approaches his territory, the male will lead her to his selected egg-laying site and hover above it with wings whirring and abdomen raised.
The common name refers to its eastern range, although this dragonfly does extend westward well into the central part of the United States. The scientific name, tenera, means delicate and alludes to its small size.
American Alligator
Alligator mississippiensis
The American alligator is a large aquatic reptile and is one of two crocodilians native to Florida. Alligators can be distinguished from the American crocodile by head shape and color. Alligators have a broad, rounded snout with no lower teeth visible when their jaw is closed. The American crocodile has a narrow snout, and the fourth tooth of the lower jaw protrudes when closed. Adult alligators are primarily dark gray in color with a lighter color underside, although juvenile alligators will have light colored stripes on their sides for camouflage. American crocodiles are a brownish gray color, and are generally paler colored than alligators. It is not uncommon for alligators to take on the colors of their environment. Many people associate alligators with the color green, but this misconception comes from the green algae and floating vegetation that frequently adheres to an alligator’s back.
Female alligators rarely exceed 10 feet in length, but males can grow much larger. The Florida state record for length is a 14-foot 3 1/2-inch male from Lake Washington in Brevard County. The Florida record for weight is a 1,043 pound (13 feet 10-1/2 inches long) male from Orange Lake in Alachua County. Armored plates (scutes) cover the body dorsally, and alligators have a vertically flattened tail.
I have posted a similar shot of these two before, but it did not include the reflection.
I thought the encore shot was justified because the reflection added a great amount of interest.
Found these two in the canal behind my house. The canal leads into Lake Pierce.
Lake Pierce is a 3700 acre lake in central Florida. It is part of what is called the "Kissimmee Chain of Lakes".
The traditional Japanese residence has an earth floor section and an uplifted wooden/Tatami floor section. Agariguchi is the edge of the uplifted floor, which is the place to take shoes on and off.
Agariguchi is also a place for conversation between the resident and the visitor. Some do not take off shoes to enter the uplifted section but sit on the edge to enjoy casual conversation. The earth floor section was a private area but open to neighbours. They often came in without asking for entry. Traditional Japanese houses have been designed to obscure the boundary between the outside and inside.
Agariguchi is almost disappeared in modern Japanese houses. Some say that the change deterred the communication within the community.
Garrulus glandarius
Bruche canal
The jay has just dug up a quail when there is no oak nearby. It has just been served in a reserve that it made to face the winter. It then flew off to eat it a little further away.
The squirrels have managed to get around the baffler (partly showing in the bottom left). Oh well! They're cute but they tend to bend and knock over my bird feeding pole. I am thinking of setting up a squirrel feeding station rather than trying to deter them.
Truckin's been pretty hectic lately, mostly because of the scheduling, like delivering at 2AM, and crap like that. Plus some equipment problems sprinkled in, and trips to repair shops, nothing major, just time consuming. Today I was actually ahead, time wise, so stopped for 30 minutes on Donner Pass to take some pictures from one of the bridges over the South Yuba River. It was just past noon west coast time, light was harsh. Still took a few pictures from the bridge, kinda scary with cars and trucks flying by, but the bridge shoulder is wide. I happen to notice a stream tributary off to my right and decided to hike down there, hoping once I got into the woods the light would be better. It was better, but not easy to deal with, really high contrast. Was wishing I'd brought my tripod and filters, but hey, just make do with what you brought.
So privileged to be invited into the homes of a couple of villagers. They live simply but happily. The Maasai are a nomadic people who wear bright red clothing to deter animals from getting too close.
Ice fell during the prior evening leaving this layer of ice on the set up in the backyard. The male downy woodpecker wasn't deterred by the ice and came often to the sunflower seeds.

Regno Unito, North Yorkshire, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Primavera 2021
Saltburn-by-the-Sea, comunemente indicato come Saltburn, è una località balneare a Redcar e Cleveland, North Yorkshire, Inghilterra. Old Saltburn è l'insediamento originale.
Saltburn-by-the-Sea, commonly referred to as Saltburn, is a seaside town in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England. Old Saltburn is the original settlement. Records are scarce on its origins, but it was a centre for smugglers. In 1856, the hamlet consisted of the Ship Inn and a row of houses, occupied by farmers and fishermen. Saltburn's attractions include the only pleasure pier on the whole of the Northeast and Yorkshire coast and the Saltburn Cliff Lift. This is one of the world's oldest water-powered funiculars. After the opening of Saltburn Pier in 1869, it was concluded that the steep cliff walk was deterring people from walking from the town to the pier. The cliff tramway opened in 1884 and provided transport between the pier and the town.

Excited to find Wasp Spiders at South Woodham today!
The Wasp Spider (Argiope bruennichi) is a native spider of Mediterranean areas, and has only recently colonised England. It is currently found mainly in the southern counties of England but is slowly spreading northwards. The wasp-like warning colouration is probably defensive, to deter predators. It can be seen from April to October in grassland, hedgerows, meadows, gardens and waste ground. It feeds on small invertebrates, especially grasshoppers and crickets.
Late afternoon in the Ionian, not enough to deter a sunbather, often followed by a katabatic wind descending from the mountains (κατάβασις ) which gives joy to wind surfers and anxiety to other sailors.
The wind blowing in the opposite direction (as can be seen from the swaying palm trees) does not deter this bird's determined flight. :)
.
Even wind and rain can't deter the avid collectors hunting for agates and Petoskey Stones that can be found among the millions of weathered beach stones washed up onto the Lake Michigan shorelines. In fact windy, rainy days might even be the best days. Rain wetting the dull, weathered stone brings out the color and patterns of fossils in the rock; and, the wind washes more stones ashore.
(Petoskey Stone is limestone rock with a pattern of fossil coral. that is unique to Michigan en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petoskey_stone )
(Agates are are rocks with attractive bands of quartz and chalcedony. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agate )

Another shot from my Thursday trip to my favourite beach. As it was a spring tide which means that there is a much higher tidal range I wanted to get a shot of the wreck of the City of Bristol paddle steamer which is only visible on very high tides. Sadly the surf was surging in and out and my tripod enjoyed getting its legs wet with one particularly large wave. Not to be deterred I tried another LE shot and this was the result. It is so much doing LE shots as I have no idea what the clouds will do ! If you view large you can just about see a small black blob - it looks like the wreck has not weathered the winter storms very well and very little left now.
Jungle babblers, like many other bird species, employ various strategies to protect their offspring. Here are some ways they do it:
Nesting: Jungle babblers typically build their nests in dense bushes or low trees, providing some level of concealment and protection from predators.
Group vigilance: Jungle babblers often live in social groups consisting of several individuals. This group structure allows them to collectively watch out for predators and provide a defense against threats.
Alarm calls: If a predator is detected, jungle babblers will sound alarm calls to alert other members of the group. This helps to mobilize the group's defense and potentially startle or deter the predator.
Mobbing behavior: When faced with a predator, jungle babblers may engage in mobbing behavior, where they gather together to confront the threat. This behavior can be intimidating to smaller predators and may drive them away.
Parental care: Both parents typically participate in caring for the young, including feeding and keeping them warm. This parental care helps ensure the survival of the offspring.
Camouflage: Jungle babbler nests are often well-camouflaged, making them difficult for predators to spot. Additionally, the dull brown plumage of adult jungle
