Bhairava is destructive, fierce, & frightening, a terrifying god resembling a male form of Kali Ma. He scares away demons and other menacing creatures. In Kathmandu's Durbar Square, this depiction of Bhairava, painted on a end of a log, protects the entrance to home Kumari, the living goddess.
One of the most destructive eruptions of Etna during history occurred in November 1928 on the east-northeast side of the volcano. It nearly completely destroyed the village of Mascali, then with a population of 5000. The eruption started high on the volcano, at about 3000 m elevation, on 2 November; a second fissure opened further downslope (at around 1700-2300 m elevation) on the next day. Lava from this second fissure rapidly advanced toward a village named Sant'Alfio, whose inhabitants brought the statue of their patron saint - Sant'Alfio - toward the menacing lava flow. It stopped at a distance of a few kilometers from the village, and as a sign of their gratitude, the people of Sant'Alfio built a little chapel near the place where the lava flow stopped. This chapel is known as the "chiesetta di Magazzeni".
The lava flow threatening Sant'Alfio stopped because on the third day of the eruption a new eruptive fissure opened at only 1200 m elevation, near Ripe della Naca, and the fissure at 1700-2300 m stopped erupting. The lava from the Ripe della Naca fissure ran into the direction of Mascali, where it arrived on 6 November - the very day of the feast of San Leonardo, the patron saint of Mascali. John Russell Fearn (1908 - 1960) was a prolific British writer, one of the first to appear in American pulp science fiction magazines. He wrote Westerns and crime fiction as well as science fiction. His writing appeared under numerous pseudonyms and included series such as “Adam Quirke,” “Clayton Drew,” and “Golden Amazon.” Writing as Vargo Statten, he created the novelization for the classic horror film “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954).
At times his stories drew on the pulp traditions of Edgar Rice Burroughs. His work received praise for its vividness, with Arthur C. Clarke commenting in 1939 that "we must admire the magnificent, if undisciplined, fertility of his mind". [Source: Wikipedia]

This photograph of a water strider demonstrates surface tension and wave interference. A water strider is small enough that the surface tension, which is the attractive force between molecules of a liquid, of the water is able to hold it up so that it does not sink. Male water striders vibrate their legs to create ripples in the water, and these ripples demonstrate wave interference. The waves that are farther away from the water strider demonstrate constructive interference, which occurs when crest meets crest and trough meets trough. Waves like this are in phase, and the result of this interference is a larger wave. On the other hand, destructive interference occurs when the crest of one wave hits the trough of another wave. Waves that meet in this manner are out of phase, and they cancel each other out. In this photograph, the water strider creates two sets of waves by vibrating his legs on both sides of his body. The intersection between these two sets of waves, which is at the center of the photograph, demonstrates destructive interference.

Aphids, also known as plant lice and in Britain and the Commonwealth as greenflies, blackflies, or whiteflies (not to be confused with "jumping plant lice" or true whiteflies), are small sap-sucking insects, and members of the superfamily Aphidoidea. Aphids are among the most destructive insect pests on cultivated plants in temperate regions. The damage they do to plants has made them enemies of farmers and gardeners the world over. From a zoological standpoint they are a highly successful group of organisms. Their success is due in part to the asexual reproductive capabilities of some species.
About 4,400 species are known, all included in the family Aphididae. Around 250 species are serious pests for agriculture and forestry as well as an annoyance for gardeners. They vary in length from 1 to 10 millimetres (0.04 to 0.39 in).
Natural enemies include predatory ladybirds, hoverfly larvae, parasitic wasps, aphid midge larvae, crab spiders, lacewings, and entomopathogenic fungi such as Lecanicillium lecanii and the Entomophthorales.
Beetle Among World’s Most Invasive and Destructive Insect Pests
BALTIMORE – Labeling it one of the largest concentrations of Khapra beetle larva they have ever seen, Baltimore Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists on Friday ordered an entire container of Pakistan rice to be re-exported or destroyed to prevent one of the world’s most destructive and invasive insect pests from threatening United States agriculture.
CBP agriculture specialists discovered 40 dead Khapra larvae during an inspection June 16 and submitted specimens to a local U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) entomologist. The entomologist confirmed on Friday that the larvae were Trogoderma granarium (Everts), commonly known as Khapra beetle.

Hurricane Sandy (also unofficially known as "Superstorm Sandy") was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. Classified as the eighteenth named storm, tenth hurricane and second major hurricane of the year, Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba.[1] While it was a Category 2 storm off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record (as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles (1,800 km)).[2][3] Estimates as of March 2014 assess damage to have been over $68 billion (2013 USD), a total surpassed only by Hurricane Katrina.[4] At least 286 people were killed along the path of the storm in seven countries.[5]
Sandy developed from a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22, quickly strengthened, and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Sandy six hours later. Sandy moved slowly northward toward the Greater Antilles and gradually intensified. On October 24, Sandy became a hurricane, made landfall near Kingston, Jamaica, re-emerged a few hours later into the Caribbean Sea and strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane. On October 25, Sandy hit Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane, then weakened to a Category 1 hurricane. Early on October 26, Sandy moved through the Bahamas.[6] On October 27, Sandy briefly weakened to a tropical storm and then restrengthened to a Category 1 hurricane. Early on October 29, Sandy curved north-northwest and then[7] moved ashore near Brigantine, New Jersey, just to the northeast of Atlantic City, as a post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds.[1][8]
In Jamaica, winds left 70% of residents without electricity, blew roofs off buildings, killed one, and caused about $100 million (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy's outer bands brought flooding to Haiti, killing at least 54, causing food shortages, and leaving about 200,000 homeless; the hurricane also caused two deaths in the Dominican Republic. In Puerto Rico, one man was swept away by a swollen river. In Cuba, there was extensive coastal flooding and wind damage inland, destroying some 15,000 homes, killing 11, and causing $2 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy caused two deaths and damage estimated at $700 million (2012 USD) in The Bahamas. In Canada, two were killed in Ontario and an estimated $100 million (2012 CAD) in damage was caused throughout Ontario and Quebec.[9]
In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states, including the entire eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine and west across the Appalachian Mountains to Michigan and Wisconsin, with particularly severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Its storm surge hit New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in and around the city.[10][11] Damage in the United States amounted to $65 billion (2013 USD).[12]

Non-Destructive, Reversible MD to A-Mount Conversion

1. Original MD stainless steal mounting ring removed.
2. The flange of a T2-A mount adapter was turned on a lathe to reduce the flange thickness to 50/1000 of an inch. Four clear holes were drilled to match the four screws on the MD mount. The adapter was then stacked on top of the MD mount and fasten with the four screws This completes the MD to A mount conversion, which is non-destructive and reversible to MD mount.
The GOES-East satellite monitored severe thunderstorms that brought torrential rain, destructive winds, and more than 400 severe weather reports along with roughly 40 tornado reports to the southern US April 11-12, 2020.
At least 19 people have been confirmed dead with dozens more injured, as 1.3 million lost power between Texas and Pennsylvania. Southern Mississippi and parts of Louisiana saw “catastrophic” damage after twin supercell thunderstorms prompted overlapping “tornado emergencies”—a rare, high-level alert that NOAA’s National Weather Service uses when an ordinary tornado warning may not go far enough.
Splitting storms can make predicting storm tracks difficult for forecasters. Additionally, split storms may merge with other existing storms, causing them to intensify and increase the chances of forming tornadoes.
Today, April 13, 2020, the storms are moving eastward. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center said that these severe storms will continue through midday from southeast Virginia to north Florida, and will be possible from midday into early afternoon from northern Virginia/Maryland into Pennsylvania. They also issued tornado watches for various areas from the Mid-Atlantic down through Florida.
The GOES-East geostationary satellite, also known as GOES-16, keeps watch over most of North America, including the continental United States and Mexico, as well as Central and South America, the Caribbean, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west coast of Africa. The satellite's high-resolution imagery provides optimal viewing of severe weather events, including thunderstorms, tropical storms, and hurricanes.

This is a an act of rebellion in a non destructive manner against pro-regime propaganda newspapers in Serbia. Civil disobidience if you will ... They had 200+ false front pages yearly and are succesfully poisoning the people as long as this regime is supporting them, giving them great amount of capital and power, as well as personal data of citizens which they are misusing and thus crafting their own propaganda.

So the workers have a choice, will they report me to the police for ...nothing? Or just put the papers the way they were... Personally I don't care. This police state and lockdown has broken out every limit. More people are dying with the corona then from it. In my hometown (roughly 30000 inhabitants+the municipality) there are less then 10 infected, mostly elder people. The lockdown is now from friday 17pm till next tuesday 5am .

Mountaintop removal is a destructive form of coal mining where mountains are blown apart to extract the coal most effectively.
This photo shows the Twisted Gun Golf Course in southern Mingo County, WV and is considered "reclaimed" by the coal industry. Given all the mines around it, we wonder how many other golf courses the community needs.

This former Worldwide Airlines 707 has a grid painted on the underside of the left forward fuselage, outside of the forward baggage compartment. Several 707s appeared to have been used to test the effects of explosives on aircraft structures.
In the early 1980s, Boeing and the US Air Force purchased a large number of retired Boeing 707-series airliners. The engine pylons and JT3D turbofan engines were removed from these aircraft, refurbished and used to replace the J57 turbojets on approximately 100 KC-135A Stratotankers.
Along with some other changes, this program produced KC-135E tankers that were operated by USAF Reserve and National Guard units from the mid-1980s until the last KC-135E was withdrawn from service in 2009.
The program was economical and very successful, providing Reserve and National Guard units with aircraft that had significantly reduced noise and emissions. Many of those units were based at civilian airports, and the turbofan conversions were welcomed by the nearby communities. Fuel consumption was reduced, and performance was also improved.
The retired airliners from which the pylons and turbofan engines were removed remained in storage for many years, providing a source of additional parts as well as airframes for various types of training and testing. All of these pictures were taken on the same day in May 1996.

Unknown photographer. On the outskirts of Munich the Freikorps' armoured train fired off a few salvoes to emphasise their proximity and the destructive powers they had at their disposal. Meanwhile, their aircraft took to the sky to drop leaflets giving warnings to those who would resist. In the outskirts some streets were already in the hands of the Freikorps' forward units. It was at this point that Egelhofer lost his head. During the last remaining days of power, the communists had rounded up members of the bourgeois and those suspected of belonging to the Thule Society. These hostages were held in the Luitpold Gymnasium's school buildings. Egelhofer on the night of the 30th ordered the wardens to begin executing these prisoners. Taken away in pairs they were either shot or bludgeoned to death with rifle butts. To his credit, Toller raced to the scene as soon as he caught wind of Egelhofer's order, but by the time he had halted the massacre twenty prominent members of Munich society were dead - some were so badly mutilated that it was difficult to identify the bodies. News of the hostage murders - Geiselmord - quickly filtered back to the Freikorps. Jettisoning their plans for launching a strike on 2 May, it was decided to make an immediate attack on the morning of the 1st. In the meantime the Red Army was shrinking as desertion from the ranks became epidemic. As they had done in Berlin, the Freikorps ripped into the city. Opposition, when it was encountered, was swiftly crushed - altogether only 70 Freikorps men lost their lives as opposed to the diehard few hundred Red Army men. The last stand of Munich's Red Army was at the city's central railway station. Opposition here was destroyed on 2 May. Egelhofer was caught when his car was flagged down trying to leave the city. The man responsible for much of Munich's recent suffering was dragged out of the vehicle and shot. Landauer - the coffee house radical and the man who had delivered Eisner's funeral eulogy - was taken to Stadelheim Prison, where he was beaten to a pulp and eventually shot. His body was left to rot in the courtyard for two days before its removal. Many others suffered a similar fate - Leviné was sentenced to face the firing squad. Just before he died, Leviné shouted: "Long live the world revolution!" Toller was more fortunate: put on trial for his life, a number of prominent Munich citizens sent in testimonials in his defence. He was sentenced to five years with no parole. Axelrod was saved by claiming diplomatic status and by Lenin's insistence that if he were harmed then German diplomats in Russia would be shot out of revenge. The Freikorps were welcomed with praise and thanks when they arrived. By the time they left, even their supporters were glad to see the back of them. As early as 4 May it was clear as to the objective the Freikorps had in mind. In a 'pep' talk to his colleagues Major Schulz of the Lützow corps announced: "Anyone who doesn't understand that there is a lot of hard work here, or whose conscience bothers him had better get out. It's better to kill a few innocent people than to let one guilty person escape." According to David Clay Large 142 POWs were shot and were quickly followed by 186 executed after "lightning-fast court-martial proceedings". On 5 May 12 workmen denounced by a priest were shot. On the next day, Catholic workers of a religious club met to discuss Education and the Theatre in a tavern on the Augustusstrasse. Bursting in on them, a patrol of Freikorps collared thirty men and then had twenty of them butchered for being 'Communist terrorists'. Over 1,000 people, it is estimated, lost their lives within the space of six days. On 7 May von Oven reported to Noske that the city was 'cleansed', and yet it was only on 13 May control was handed back to Hoffman. And with that a very uneasy peace returned to Munich, although the scars of conflict ran deep. Richard Watt in 'The Kings Depart' wrote: "It was inevitable that in the course of these successive regimes practically every Bavarian class and faction would be left with some grievous suffering to brood over - and to avenge." Meanwhile, Adolf Hitler, Iron Cross First Class, had been assigned as an Army political agent. Apart from giving his own fiery talks to the rank and file, Hitler's job was to keep his ear to the ground and report on the political currents in the city. In September his Commanding Officer gave him a new assignment. He was to investigate a tawdry group of right wingers who were called - preposterously for such a parochial clique - the German Workers' Party. Non-Destructive, Reversible MD to A-Mount Conversion

1. Original MD stainless steal mounting ring removed.
2. The flange of a T2-A mount adapter was turned on a lathe to reduce the flange thickness to 50/1000 of an inch. Four clear holes were drilled to match the four screws on the MD mount. The adapter was then stacked on top of the MD mount and fasten with the four screws This completes the MD to A mount conversion, which is non-destructive and reversible to MD mount.

The curtain has at long last fallen on the destructive and polarising campaign of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, which claimed more than 70,000 lives over the last 26 years. Led by Velupillai Prabhakaran, the Tamil Tigers pioneered the use of suicide bombers and were responsible for the assassination not only of Sri Lankan leaders but also of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Prabhakaran’s ruthlessness and total disregard for human rights did not appear to dent his hold on his people in the areas he controlled or even on the Tamils living abroad.
Previous efforts at finding a negotiated settlement had all foundered on the rocks of LTTE intransigence. Humanitarian concern about the innocent Tamils trapped and kept trapped by the LTTE for use as human shields was understandable but for the Sri Lankan army there was, in their view, no alternative to seeking an unconditional surrender, whatever the ‘collateral damage’.
Today there is outcry in the West about the manner in which the Sri Lankan army conducted operations and about the suppression of dissent in the Sri Lankan media. There is talk of denying Sri Lanka the IMF loan it desperately needs and withdrawing the preferential trading sights that it enjoys with the European Union. Yet the need of the hour is assistance for the refugees and for the more than a quarter of a million people who were more or less held hostage by the Tamil Tigers in their “last stand”.
There is further need to provide the political backing which ensures that the reconciliation process does not become hostage to the activities of Tigers sympathisers from across the narrow strait that separates Sri Lanka from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Much has been written about the role that external forces — be it the national government in India or the state government of Tamil Nadu or non-state actors — had played in fomenting the Sinhalese-Tamil divide or the rise of the LTTE. The international community must play its part in ensuring that this does not recur.
This should not be too difficult. The greatly strengthened Manmohan Singh government, with a minimal dependence on the regional political parties, will have the capacity to guarantee non-interference in Sri Lankan affairs.
All that the international community should insist upon thereafter as a condition for its assistance is that a clear path for reconciliation should be set out and be acted upon.
It is perhaps true that when the government was able to establish control in eastern Sri Lanka, it did not move in this direction. Perhaps the Rajapaksa government was too preoccupied with the continuing military campaign to do so. Perhaps it was because the long years of conflict have created distrust and even hatred that will take time to overcome. Many Tamils who opposed Prabhakaran and the LTTE have not joined the Sinhalese in celebrating the Tigers’ defeat because they did not hear in Rajapaksa’s victory speech any word on what his government intended doing to move towards reconciliation. Reconciliation is, however, the only way forward.
Are there any parallels between the situation in Sri Lanka and the counter-insurgency operation that we are now waging? If there are none, is there any prospect of such parallels developing in the future?
Currently there appear to be no parallels. The Taliban in Malakand are not reflecting Pashtun or Swati aspirations. Their agenda is to push their distorted interpretation of Islam down the throat of all Pakistanis and then move further afield. Whatever the movement started as, there is no doubt that it has been infiltrated and perhaps even taken over by criminal elements.
Underneath the surface, however, lies a simmering resentment that pervades all Pashtuns, be they in Afghanistan, Pukhtunkhwa or Karachi (which has more Pashtuns than either Peshawar or Kabul). In their perspective, whatever the reasons for the conflict or its prolongation, Pashtun blood is being spilled on both sides. It is Pashtuns who are branded as extremists even though it is Pashtuns who are the principal victims of the extremists. Many in this community have become paranoid enough to suggest that the “authorities” are using them as pawns to carry forward an agenda that has little to do with the genuine aspirations of the moderate Pashtuns.
For the Pashtuns, the massive exodus from Malakand, occasioned as much by fear of military action as by the atrocities committed by the Taliban is yet another indicator of the miseries that have been inflicted upon them for no fault of their own. Many can perhaps be persuaded that the fault lay with the American invasion of Afghanistan, but too many others recall how the setting up of Taliban recruitment centres in Swat and the tribal areas, long after the Soviets had left, contributed to the radicalisation of the region.
If we are not to return to the dreaded days of the past when many Pashtuns argued that there was no place for them in Pakistan, there are two things that must be done. First, the IDPs must be looked after not only in Pukhtunkhwa but also anywhere else in Pakistan. Equally or perhaps more importantly, the military operation must be brought to closure quickly. It is encouraging that people, at least in the thousands, have started returning to Buner and one can hope that the clearing of Sultanwas will hasten the process further. We must not, however, make the mistake of withdrawing the army immediately. The area must be cleared and then held.
We should acknowledge that the resistance has been stiffer than expected and that our present effort may need to be reinforced by further contingents from our eastern border, particularly if areas are to be held after they are cleared. The development of our civil armed forces and police will take time and the area cannot be abandoned.
I saw some evidence of a willingness to do this in the ISPR statement that the eastern border remained a long term threat while the internal threat was, at least by implication, more immediate. That resistance would be strong became evident when it was revealed that in the Peochar Valley, under the very eyes of our intelligence agencies, the militants had been able to build 80ft deep bunkers and other such defensive positions. In areas where the civil administration and the intelligence agencies were less visible, even more must have been done.
Sri Lanka does one offer one lesson. This is a war for Pakistan’s survival. It must be fought without illusions and without yielding to the temptation to believe that one has credible and willing partners with whom a negotiated peace could be worked out. The time for that has passed. The time for reconciliation will come when military victory has been achieved just as it has now come in Sri Lanka.

This orientation toward nature could not be sustained indefinitely. The spices and other luxury foods consumed by the dissolute Roman elite in their banquets had to be imported at great expense from locations as distant as India.
The more exotic the food, the better; as recorded in the Apicius, a cookbook for elite Roman feasts, items such as thrushes and other songbirds, wild boars, raw oysters, and even flamingo were on the menu at elite banquets.
Rome could not export enough goods to pay for these luxury imports, and was increasingly forced to pay with scarce gold and silver. Severe economic crises crippled the empire, forcing emperors after Augustus to end the customary distribution of free food to plebeians and to institute taxes on Roman citizens.
The empire collected the funds it needed to subsidize military campaigns mainly from farmers, who consequently could not afford to invest in the production of crops and fell increasingly into debt.
Environmental degradation intensified, and the empire found itself unable to produce the food surplus on which its reproduction depended. Ultimately, Rome was no longer able to pay its large and far-flung standing armies, and, after a turbulent 500-year existence, the overextended empire fell to the invading barbarian hordes of the north.
Rome today is remembered mainly for environmentally destructive achievements such as the Colosseum, suggesting that subsequent cultures learned remarkably little from the unsustainable dominion and ultimate eclipse of the empire.

Patrick "Pat" O'Reilly Brown, is chief executive and founder of Impossible Foods Inc. and professor emeritus in the department of biochemistry at Stanford University. Brown's company, Impossible Foods, wants to eliminate all meat from human diets and produce food that people crave without using livestock. A new Impossible Foods facility in California is scheduled to open before the end of 2017 with the ability to produce four million burgers a month.

In Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) systems, a pair of ultrasonic probes are used, sitting on opposite sides of a weld-joint or area of interest. A transmitter probe emits an ultrasonic pulse which is picked up by the receiver probe on the opposite side. In an undamaged part, the signals picked up by the receiver probe are from two waves: one that travels along the surface (lateral wave) and one that reflects off the far wall (back-wall reflection). When a discontinuity such as a crack is present, there is a diffraction of the ultrasonic sound wave from the top and bottom tips of the crack. Using the measured time of flight of the pulse, the depth of the crack tips can be calculated automatically by trigonometry application.

Not even Broly's father could control his destructive tendencies, so he fashioned a special mind-control circlet to keep him restrained. For the most part, this worked, though as time went on Broly found ways to clome ever closer to circumventing it. When Broly attacked Goku in the middle of the night, he found himself able to reattain his Super Saiyan form even while under restraint... though because of the circlet, it was suppressed, distorted, his hair turning blue instead of gold. Yet it was still more than enough for Goku to realize that Broly was way more than he seemed.

There is an incredible number of destructive gypsy moth caterpillars in our area of Cape Cod this year. Trees are stripped bare in patches all over. This just adds to the stress our trees are already facing with winter moths, pine borers, and oak wasps. It's so sad to see all the trees being removed.

Success in destructive testing-- or, I broke it.
Looking into annealing the sugar models by putting them in a warm oven, near the melting point. These were put in a hot oven, close to but below the melting point of sucrose. (A digital oven thermometer is a must.)
After half an hour in the oven, this was the result: a puddle. The bottom of the models had melted, and the lower "legs" of the model had softened significantly as well. On the top side, there was indeed some evidence of smooth annealing. I suspect that some of the melting is due to the cookie sheet- perhaps it was warmer than the air in the oven-- the same thing happens to chocolate chip cookies; they can get easily burnt on the bottom. The next thing to try might be using a semi-insulated cookie sheet.

Jonathan Beaumont, a Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) Engineer, works to improve the equipment that the IAEA’s safeguards inspectors use to perform various types of measurement, such as determining the composition of nuclear fuel and other nuclear material. “NDA is a group of techniques which allow you to make different kinds of measurements without permanently altering nuclear fuel or material, chemically or physically,” he says. “This means that nuclear fuel and material can be verified and still be used for peaceful purposes.”
