"REBEL87" Hammering through the Welsh valleys!

Top squadron top flying as always from 41 Squadron!

This photo was taken in Belgrade.

The City of Arcadia is the county seat for DeSoto County. It is centrally located between Orlando, Ft. Myers; Sarasota and Lake Okeechobee at the crossroads of US 17 and State Route 70.

Arcadia is famous throughout Florida for its historic downtown antique district. Additionally, on the fourth Saturday of each month, vendors from surrounding locations take over our streets with even more wares and precious finds. Tucked between the shops, you'll have the chance to enjoy cafes, home cooking, a tea room and even an old fashion ice cream parlor, complete with homemade delicious flavors, sundaes and shakes.

The Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo is held in March, the Annual Watermelon Festival in May at the height of the harvesting season, and car shows, parades, and special events take place throughout the year.

According to The Atlas of Florida, "The Rev. James Madison ("Boss") Hendry (1839–1922) named the town in honor of Arcadia Albritton (1861–1932), a daughter of Thomas H. and Fannie (Waldron) Albritton, pioneer settlers. Arcadia had baked him a cake for his birthday and he appreciated it so much that he named the city after her."

In 1886, transportation improved in Arcadia when the Florida Southern Railway (later the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) was built through Arcadia on its way from Bartow to Punta Gorda. The railway caused Arcadia to grow significantly, which led to Arcadia becoming incorporated a year later. A second railroad line, the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway (later the Seaboard Air Line Railroad), was built through Arcadia from 1907 to 1910 on its way from Mulberry to Boca Grande. Both lines have since been consolidated into a single line by CSX with the Seaboard line surviving north of Arcadia and the Atlantic Coast Line surviving to the south. Arcadia was also served by the short-lived East and West Coast Railway which connected Arcadia with Bradenton from 1915 to 1934.

During the late 19th century Arcadia was the county seat of what would become many counties. In 1921 legislation enacted called for Arcadia to remain the county seat of DeSoto County and resulted in the creation of the present-day counties of Charlotte, Hardee, Glades and Highlands. Prior to this breakup Arcadia's population had grown considerably, with over 1,000 permanent residents and 3,000 square miles (7,800 km2) for ranching.

On Thanksgiving Day in 1905 the town was destroyed by a large-scale fire that originated from a mid-town livery stable. The fire was exacerbated because the town did not have a working water system or fire department. The estimated monetary damage was $250,000, but there was no loss of life. Much of the business district was not spared. It would be years before the town recovered.

Oak Street is the "main street" in Arcadia. The downtown is far more elaborate than neighboring counties' downtown areas, as Arcadia is older and was their county seat prior to the formation of their present counties. Arcadia is also home to many early 20th century homes, houses of worship and several historic public buildings.

From 1917 to 1922, Arcadia was the home of Carlstrom Field, a grass airfield of the U.S. Army Air Service named for deceased aviation pioneer Victor Carlstrom. Carlstrom Field was used for pilot training both during and after World War I. In May 1941 the site again became an airfield for military primary flight training, operated by the Embry–Riddle Aeronautical Institute (now Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University). Carlstrom Field, one of several satellite fields in the Fort Myers area, also trained pilots for the Royal Air Force until its closing in 1945.

Arcadia's historic buildings include the Johnson-Smith House, William Oswell Ralls House and Micajah T. Singleton House. Also, approximately 3,400 acres which includes the downtown area are part of the Arcadia Historic District.

Brunos Sculpture Garden, Marysville. Nestled amongst the luscious rainforest setting lives a collection of unforgettable characters lovingly hand crafted by Bruno from clay and fired onsite in his kiln. Bruno has created a world rich with fantasy and insightful beauty derived from his imagination and inspired by his intrepid journeys to some the world most intriguing and remote regions.

Unfortunately on the 7th of February 2009 a bushfire raged through the township, decimating everything in its path without mercy and claimed the lives of our friends and neighbours indiscriminately. Bruno was extremely lucky to survive and the rest of the family are safe and well. Bruno's home and art gallery were unfortunately completely destroyed in the blaze.

Bruno chose to stay in Marysville to rebuild his home and restore the gardens. BrunoⳠpassion to share his love of art and the story of life with the world has not been damaged by the fires, in fact you would almost say it has been forged anew by the flames that nearly took it all away. (Excerpts from Bruno's Art & Sculpture garden website www.brunosart.com)

Fleshing out a new shape. I will make some changes; widen the neck, alter the wing-shapes but I'm feeling this more than the trans-yellow version. Also the engine section needs more experimentation.

Well, I finally decided to destroy the old 'Hog. I could just never fix the shape. I've completely rebuilt the Warthog, and I'm much more pleased with it.

I'd also like to thank Legohaulic for taking the time to help me out with the design.

The Great East Window at St Mary Redcliffe.

St Mary Redcliffe lost the majority of its medieval stained glass during the damage done by Parliamentary forces in the 17th century. In 1842, the committee responsible for the restoration of the church were mostly concerned with the condition of the stonework which was estimated to cost some £40,000 to repair, but were determined to have the large east window, which at the time was bricked up, filled with glass. In 1847, the committee awarded the contract for its design and implementation to William Wailes of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, one of the most prolific stained glass designers of the 19th century, who estimated the cost at £330. This window was replaced in 1904 by a design by Clayton & Bell; Wailes' window being destroyed.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin, widely known as St Mary Redcliffe, is the main Church of England parish church for the Redcliffe district of Bristol. The first reference to a church on the site appears in 1158, with the present building dating from 1185 to 1872. The church is considered one of the country’s finest and largest parish churches as well as an outstanding example of English Gothic architecture. The church is so large it is sometimes mistaken for Bristol Cathedral by tourists. It is, unsurprisingly of Grade I listed status.

The church is notable for its many large stained glass windows, decorative stone vaults, flying buttresses, rare hexagonal porch and massive Gothic spire. With a height of 84 metres to the top of the weathervane, St Mary Redcliffe is the second-tallest structure in Bristol and the sixth-tallest parish church in the country. The church spire is a major Bristol landmark, visible from across the city and until the completion of Castle Park View in 2020, was the tallest structure ever to have been erected in Bristol.

St Mary Redcliffe has received widespread critical acclaim from various architects, historians, poets, writers and monarchs. Queen Elizabeth I, on a visit to the church in 1574, described St Mary Redcliffe as “The fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England”; Simon Jenkins gives St Mary Redcliffe the maximum five-star rating in his book ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’, one of only eighteen to receive such a rating, describing it as a “masterpiece of English Gothic”; and Nikolaus Pevsner says that “St Mary Redcliffe need not fear comparison with any other English parish church”.

The planet was being destroyed by manufacturing processes, and what was being manufactured was lousy, by and large.

Kurt Vonnegut

The church was built in 1654 in dedication to Saint Peter over a medieval citadel that was erected by Frederick I and restored by Louis IX of France at the beginning of the second half of the thirteenth century. However, in the late eighteenth century the church was twice destroyed and consequently twice rebuilt. The current structure was built between 1888 and 1894 and most recently renovated in 1903. The church was constructed on its present location because of the significance Jaffa has to Christianity. It was in Jaffa that Saint Peter raised Tabitha, one of Jesus' disciples, from the dead according to the Acts of the Apostles, Acts 9:36-43, Acts 10:1-4. The church is dedicated to him. Since the large church is located on a hill near the shore, the building has historically dominated the view of Jaffa from the sea, thus serving as a beacon to pilgrims, signaling that the Holy Land is near.

Tasmanian artist Max Angus on his friend Olegas Truchanas:

"He had been destroyed, with Biblical simplicity, by two of the elements: fire, and water. Five years had passed between their brief and terrible visits. He had perished in the river he sought to save. Classical mythology affords no stronger example of the drama of the incorruptible man who passes into legend."

First the fire. In the summer of 1967 terrible fires ripped through southern Tasmania, especially the suburbs of Hobart. Olegas was at work and received a distressing call from his wife Melva. Should she leave? Absolutely, said Olegas, get out now! When they met up later in the day they knew their home had gone along with the lives of 62 Tasmanians. But worse news was to come.

A photographer will guard with his or her life their camera and their photographs. Now 10,000 of these priceless relics of the south-western Tasmanian wilderness had been destroyed by fire. Lost forever. So what does a hero do in such circumstances? Well he sets out to re-create as best he can many of those iconic photographs. So for the next five years (all the while battling to save his precious Lake Pedder), Truchanas took thousands of slides. I mentioned Superman in the previous photo dedicated to this man, and that is precisely the task he attempted to achieve.

But no one expected Superman to be undone by the very element he loved the most: The River. It was on one of those photo re-creation journeys that Truchanas set off with a friend and their kayaks down his beloved Gordon River on January 6, 1972. As he stepped out of his kayak to make a landing he slipped on a rock. He was washed down a waterfall and disappeared. His death was witnessed by a young Kevin Kiernan, who put the call out for a search to commence.

One of the first to respond was the man I will introduce to you in the next photograph: Peter Dombrovskis. Since he was a younger fellow immigrant, Olegas had taken the budding photographer Peter Dombrovskis under his wing. As fate would have it (or perhaps synchronicity is the better word), it was Peter who first found Olegas' body. It was a blow to shatter most men, but an Olegas Truchanas disciple is made of tougher stuff than mere mortals.

And so the legend of Peter Dombrovskis is born in the death of Olegas Truchanas.

Gyeongbok Palace, Seoul, South Korea.

Built at the beginning of the Chosun Dynasty when the Yi Dynasty moved the capital to Seoul, this palace remained the main seat of power for Korea kings throughout much of the time to the present. Gyeongbok means Shining Happiness. The main gate (Kwanghwa-mun) separates Gyeongbok Palace from one of the busiest areas of Seoul. Gyeongbok Palace was built as the primary palace of the Chosun Kingdom by its founder, King Taejo in 1395, the fourth year of his reign. It was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1592 and left in ruins for over 250 years. Starting in 1865, it was rebuilt to its original grandeur.

The focal point of Gyeongbok royal palace in Seoul is the throne hall where Joseon’s kings were coronated and where affairs of state were conducted.

The Destroyed City (Dutch: De verwoeste stad) is a bronze memorial sculpture in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. It commemorates the German bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, which destroyed the medieval centre of the city. Unveiled in 1953, it was designated as a Dutch national monument (Rijksmonument) in 2010. It is the largest sculpture by the Russian-born French sculptor Ossip Zadkine, his best known work and the best known sculpture in Rotterdam.

The 6.5 m (21 ft) high sculpture depicts an stylized human figure leaning against a tree stump. The figure holds both hands aloft, with its head thrown back as if crying in grief, and a gaping hole in its chest and abdomen. The absence of a heart is said to symbolise the destruction of the centre of Rotterdam. Zadkine described it as "A cry of horror against the inhuman brutality of this act of tyranny". The sculpture has been compared to the figure with arms raised in terror on the far right of Picasso's painting Guernica. It stands on a tapering 2 m (6 ft 7 in) high plinth of Labrador granite blocks (reportedly, the stone had been intended for a sculpture of Adolf Hitler in Berlin). It is sited on the north side of the early 17th century dock basin of Leuvehaven [nl] in the centre of Rotterdam.
