If the economy is in turmoil, you wouldn’t know it from watching the Bic Plastics booth, which kept a steady crowd all day at VTN. Excitement had been building for the new toy company all year, and today was the largest release of several of Bic’s premiere figures. With toys priced from $45-$170, Bic had some of the priciest production pieces at the convention, but urban characters combined with top notch design, QC and packaging–as well as the presence of many of the artists–brought the fans en masse. Marka27, Mike and Mark of Blokhedz, kaNO, and MAD were amicably nonstop signing all manner of toys, sketchbooks and even a PDA. It was great to finally see these pieces in person. Many of them (Sham the Clown) are huge while others (Sketchartis) are heavy. Seriously, toting that David Flores piece around VTN would build a bicep. Besides the signings, Bic had exclusives like a GID version of Killa Instinct, and they were also giving away free posters. I had the opportunity to conversate with one of VTN’s security guards who was standing nearby taking it all in. I sometimes forget that most people think we toy collectors are a bit nuts. The security guard, we’ll call her, Lucy, was shocked that I’d paid $7 for a 2.5-inch Kozik Redrum Qee. I gleefully pointed her attention to the folks dropping mad benjamins at Bic. I tried to explain that these are art pieces–like paintings wrapped around toys–that are now part of museum collections and prestigious international auctions. She nodded in some indication of understanding, but I still think she thinks we’re nuts.

Quite an old 4" munny I never got round to photographing.

Nagoya is one of largest city in Japan.

Designed in London, hand crafted in Zurich, Arborobots are the result of a colaboration by Cris Rose and Pepe - solid wooden bots that are happy to help.

Made from Walnut, Cherry and Brass, these chaps are very limited.

Ramble is the larger character, a robot grown from wood that feels he is missing something in his big hollow tummy. Coming in single and two-eyed variants, he has thoughts on what he might desire and looks to seek them out.

Roam is the smaller chap, keen to help out and particularly good at finding lost things. With one big brass eye, he holds his find aloft and shuffles along as quickly as he can manage.

The initial release of this pair will include Roam and two-eyed Ramble in Walnut and Cherry. There will be 3x 2 packs that include both figures and a camera accessory, as well as 2 Roam and 2 Ramble figures sold individually.

Finally, there is a single painted Ramble, crafted by Pepe and painted by Cris Rose as well as some framed original Polaroids of the pair.

Released July 7th.

Not sure which was cooler: Interviewing Frank Kozik or getting to look through his toy collection. You can read the full interview with Frank here:

An excerpt of the intro:

Frank Talk With Mr. Kozik

Frank Kozik is misunderstood. Or maybe he’s perfectly understood in a scene with many contradictions. Either way, he’s earned a living making stuff he likes for three decades. At the age of 48, he’s already been a successful poster artist and run his own record label. These days, most people know Frank Kozik from his toy art, which began in Japan with Medicom and Bounty Hunter. In the early part of this decade, Kidrobot discovered him through a credit card order, and what followed set the course for both Kozik and the American vinyl toy scene.

Frank invited us over to visit his San Francisco studio-slash-toy shrine this week. Perhaps you’ve met Kozik before, at a toy signing or event, and come away thinking he seemed jaded or grouchy. (I have.) But at his home base, the man who gave birth to a million smoking bunny rabbits was at ease and open. For a couple hours, we talked about toys (there to make people happy), art (jury’s out on what it is) and money (one of Frank’s unabashed favorite things). Frank answered every question we lobbed his way. Ultraviolence? Fiberglass on the way. More Kaiju? Maybe in 2011. Current music? “Old metal and flavor-of-the-week fake South African hip hop.” Let’s begin at the beginning.

Hell yuss... I got these from Helsinki two days ago, and I love them! :D
