The Fall 2011 Design Matters students try out their sand lathes at North Avenue Beach

General view from the southwest at First Avenue and University Street. The building, a "decorated shed," mimics Renaissance palazzos through its expression of base, middle and top. The windowless galleries are balanced with open public spaces on the first and second floors and glazed administative offices on the fifth floor.

Natural light is admitted into the entry hall through simply detailed steel windows and the rooftop clerestory which is in sharp contrast to the traditional dormer on the existing carriage house. Water drains from the roof via the vertical chain leader.
