Detail of dolphin and scallop shell sculpture. Many symbols appear throughout The Breakers. The symbols used most frequently are the acorn, oak leaf, scallop shell and dolphin. Acorns and oak leaves, representing strength and long life, were adopted as the family symbol. Dolphins are an ancient symbol of hospitality. Scallops are a symbol of fertility.
