Site of Alcoa's New Kensington Works, 1891-1971. This was the first aluminum plant built by Alcoa (originally called the Pittsburgh Reduction Company) following the company's startup phase in Pittsburgh's Strip District. From about 1900 onward the plant specialized in finished and semi-finished aluminum products -- tubes, sheet, foil, cookware, seals, etc. Alcoa's Wear-Ever line of cookware was produced here.

Tanqueray Gin was initially distilled in 1830 by Charles Tanqueray, who was descended from three generations of clergy from the village of Tingreth in Bedfordshire. At 20 he chose not to follow the family calling and established a distillery in the Bloomsbury district of London instead. When Charles died in 1868, the company passed into the hands of his heir, Charles Waugh Tanqueray. During World War II the distillery was almost completely destroyed. After the great air raid of 1941 only one of the stills, known as "Old Tom," survived and it is still in use today at the distillery in Cameronbridge, Scotland. The gin is primarily produced in Scotland and exported to its major market, the US. It is a London Dry Gin, so called because of the distillation process, not the origin of the product. Commercial Streetscape Design of Beaufort Park along the 400m Aerodrome Road frontage of the development. The terrace is part od the overall design concept developed for the commercial, pedestrian public realm interface with Aerodrome Road.

The planting and level change forms a buffer between the terrace and the busy road, but the design allows easy access (via steps and discabled access) and visual connection with the bulding and between passers-by and guests on the terrace.

This is a quick capture from our tour bus of a small commercial building signed "First Deco". I believe this is the first building in the Art Deco style in South Miami. It includes early examples of straight lines, geometric shapes and clean rectangular elements.
